    - Word macros failing after installing XP SP2 I just installed XP SP2 on XP Pro. A bunch of macros that I was using in Word 97 and Word 2003 immediately before the service pack install are no longer working. I don't have an exhaustive list of what's not working, but here are a couple I ran into right away: left() and mid() are gone. Error is "Can't find Project or Library," thrown during compilation phase. The statement Selection.style = ActiveDocument.Styles("Normal") gives the error "Could not open macro storage" during execution. The version of Word is Word 97 SR-2. Word 2003 11.6113.5606 was installed in a separate directory, long after installing Word 97. All was fine before XP SP2. Ironically, I'm trying to write an article about the changes people should expect to see on installing SP2. Any advice and direction on this would be greatly appreciated.     - Flow many lines into 1 very long line I need to flow several lines together. The data looks like this, only there are over 1000 lines. 100010206116W502 100010207506W500 100010503204W502 it needs to become IN(100010206116W502,100010207506W500,100010503204W502) to be pasted into a "canned" SQL filter in another program.     - how avoid changing of template Hello I've written a VB6-application for word-automation. The App starts word and creates a new doc which is based on a word-template. After filling out the doc with text and formfields I interrupt the reference from the VB6 to word. After saving the document and closing them I am asked if the changing of the template should be save too. What can be the reason that the template is be changed and how can I avoid the dialog? My "status" drop-down saves as: [status]</status> It should save as: [status]mystatus</status> The following workaround failed: Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - 212100 http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;212100 It does work if I open in Word 2000 and save from there. But my users are using Word 2003. Can't find the answer anywhere. I could use tools\options\save\"save data for forms only" but that will require me to rewrite a lot of code.     - Best practice re list templates? Hi all I'd really appreciate some best practice advice re using VBA for setting up list templates and styles for outline/paragraph numbering. We're getting ready for a major format/style conversion and I'd like to make sure we get paragraph numbering right. We're staying with Word 2000 for the time being but working with documents that were originally created in Word 2000 as well as WordPerfect (a variety of versions) and Word 97. We have a master "Normal" template with the new formatting and new styles. I've developed a macro that uses .UpdateStyles (3 times) to try to update the styles in the documents to be converted. Unfortunately .UpdateStyles (x3) doesn't seem to update outline numbering on relevant styles reliably or correctly. I've tried using .OrganizerCopy and that seems to do a better job but even that doesn't seem to get the outline numbering right -- sometimes it copies the outline linking correctly sometimes it doesn't and there doesn't seem to be any particular pattern: it will get certain styles right in one document but not in the next. (I don't know if that's a problem with lurking legacy incompatibilities in the documents or what.) I'm thinking that the only way to make sure that outline numbering and linked styles in the styles in the converted documents are uniform and match the styles in the new Normal template is to do it through VBA, by setting up a macro (or series of macros) that define each and every style. Is that a good idea or is there another way to do it? BTW here's the code I've been using to try to get the styles copied over just in case anyone can see something wrong in what I've been doing.     - TOC Automation problem Hi all, I have a VB6 app that creates a document based on a template. This template has a TOC on the first page and an autotext entry with various bookmarks is set up. The first field on the autotext enty (ie. the first bookmark) is a Name field and is set up to print a new page break before. The TOC is set up to use the Name bookmark instead of the heading fields. I generate the document, but the TOC is out of sync. The entry names are fine and in order but the page numbers are funny. The first is 3, for example, and the other are all 2.     - Word Document VBA Question Hi, I have an application that creates a report using a third party tool which has the ability to export to a RTF (Word) document. The problem I am running into is the report has lines to seperate certain sections however the export does not support lines. I am looking for a solution in where I create a Word Macro and create the lines in Word. Or I was thinking of creating a word document and use it as a template. The report is basically a quote form generated for sales and sales needs to have the ability to edit it. Basically, the lines are used to hold the line items and give it a professional look. I was thinking that the Word document could have a textbox for the line items and I just pass the info in and would shrink or grow as the data grows.     - Programming toolbar buttons Hi Folks, I'm using the code below to create toolbars based on toolbar settings in another template (for my own reasons) which are stored in an ini file. Everything works great (toolbars are created with all the appropriate details) except they do not execute my required styles. The buttons which have macros assigned to them work fine but the buttons I used for style shortcuts do not. I assumed that the name of the style assigned to a macro being the same as a style would be enough but it seems I'm a muppet. Any pointers??     - how do you copy a user form I've got a user form (in Word 2002) that has a number of controls and labels in it. I need to make several similar forms in the same document, but rather than build each of these other forms from scratch, I'd rather clone my existing form, and treak it into the copies I need. I've looked for a way to copy the form, but I can't find anything in the Project Explorer, toolbars or menus that look like a way to copy the form. Can anyone tell me how I can accomplish this?     - VB/Word - Making lines read only Hi, I'm trying to write an Visual Basic application that starts Microsoft Word to allow a user to edit a text file. However the first line is a header and the last line is a trailer and I don't want the user to delete these lines. Also when the user exits from Word (closes the file or exits Word) I want the control to be returned to the VB application so that I can update the trailer. I am new to VB with Word so please bear with me. There are not many resources on the Web to assist. What I need to know is: 1) Is there an easy way to make the line read-only? Line in this case is the same as the Sentences object. If not would I have to trap all the insert/replace/delete events and beep if the user is on the first or last line? 2) Is there some sample code showing how I can start Word in VB AND take back control when the user closes the file?     - Word 2003: phantom temp files in startup folder Hi all, I have two Word add-ins that have been well-behaved for a long while on several PCs running Word 2000 or Word 2002. Today I installed them in a PC running Word 2003. They still work fine, but after closing Word, the two matching temp files ("~%restofname.dot") are still there in the Startup folder with the real files. And they stay there. Even after a reboot. Is anything wrong? It doesn't seem to affect performance, but this certainly hasn't been standard behavior in the past. The files are identical to those installed with earlier Word versions, and Outlook is *not* using Word as its email editor. All PCs are running WinXP Pro.     - Retrieving the Auto Number Does anybody know how I could the auto number in a selection: Example: 1. Blah 2. Blah blah. '1' and '2' are automatically inserted using the auto numbering feature in word. When I select (say) 'Blah'; I cannot, of course, select '1' along with it ('1' is an auto number).     - Use IF to Loop or not? AND IF w/ error codes? I had an idea, and thought I would post it here to see if it survived scrutiny. A line in my macro errored because another process wasn't completely done. Is it possible and would it be okay to use On Error Resume Next and the error code with an IF to loop back through the missed instruction until it completes? Hi all I'm trying to figure out how to get the ListTemplate index/name for a specific style -- I'd like to be able to modify the style's LinkedStyle and in order to do that it seems I have to specify the Style's ListTemplate first.     - Apply Multiple Templates? What's the right approach? I am generating word 2002 docs based on a custome template that includes a customized toolbar that runs VBA routines. Using bookmarks I've pre- populated a lot of basic info in the doc. I then need to pass off these generated docs to someone that fills in the balance of the document info. That person has a set of 50 templates that she has been using to fill in sections of the starting doc based on certain criteria. I'm pretty unfamiliar with Word templates and what I am running up against, surprisingly, is that if she applies one of her custom dot files to what I pass her, her access to the custom toolbar in my original dot is lost. I'm not sure how to deal with this. As far as I can tell, a word doc can only be attached to one dot at a time. This would seem to imply that I'd have to add my VBA code and toolbar to all of her 50 specail dot files for her to retain access to the them. I could do this but the maint seems onerous. I know that in the 2000 Word program you were able to open Excel from that location .In Office 2003 Professional Edition you have to go outside of Word and into Excel to copy or transfer information .     - Storing large amounts of (hidden) data within a single word document? Hi all- thanks in advance for your help; using Word97 on Win98SE... I'm looking for the best way to store this large amounts of information (essentially several manually-built flat file database tables) in a word document without it being accessable to the user; I remember reading (but can't find) a post talking about this subject, and I think Custom DocProperties were the suggested solution... however, in my tests, the document properties (including custom ones) are available to any user via the document property interface, which is undesirable for me. Does anyone have other ideas on how to handle this? Can I suppress the custom docproperties information from showing in the user interface? What about (noting: Word97/ Win98SE) saving the information in some sort of low level encryption to avoid the property 'value' from being read, even if the user looks at the property dialog? Essentially I need to store data (away from user's eyes) without putting the data in the document or in a separate file. I am thinking that maybe I could do this by writing the data in XML format (using whatever XML command is available for encryption?) and that might also make it easier to work with the data, but I haven't messed with XML yet, so I'll wait to hear if that is possible/desirable in Word97 before I start a whole new learning curve...     - Emailing Word Document Using Macro Hi All, I hope someone can help me, We have a word document for requesting a courier service, the user currently has to open the document from our Intranet, enters the data then sends it as an attachment to our stores dept.     - ByRef question Hello all, Here's my scenario. I have an Access app that needs to grab data from an Excel worksheet. What I've done is create a function in Access that simply calls excel.run(myproc(arg1, arg2)). The excel proc needs to return a bunch of numbers so I pass ByRef. I can't think of a cleaner way of doing this without updating the db in excel itself. My question: In Access, when I declare my excel object as an object, the byref works, but if I declare it as Excel.Application then it doesn't work. Why? In both tests, I use set xlsApp = new excel.application, the only difference is in the actualy dim statement. Am I missing something here, cause I'd really like to bind early, it's just cleaner.     - Check for Bookmark then run userform I want to write some code that will check to see if a bookmark exists and if it does, run a userform. Once the user has filled in the userform and clicked OK, I want the code to find the bookmark and delete it. If the bookmark doesn't exist, then I don't want the code to run...     - Extracting Endnotes Number Hi all, I am required to get the number of an endnote and check if it is present in the main document. To elaborate further, assuming I have something like: 3 For a historical description of the... 3 being the superscripted end note number that word automatically assigns. I will need to extract the text '3' out of the end note. When I copy and paste any endnote, I get '[1]' instead of '3'. Also, when I just do a msgbox(selection.text), I get a funny character instead of the endnote number. Is there anyway, I can retreive the endnote number? After I reetrieve it, I will have to check if it is present in the main document which is fairly easy. It's the text extracting part that's eating my brain (however limited!) away.     - Certificate of Security Hi As my security settings are medium, I am always being asked if I want to activate my macros. So I installed SelfCert.exe and run it (apparently successfully according to a window) But it didn't make any difference and my name didn't not appear in the security window as a reliable source.     - How to Lock links (programatically) without incurring an update I have found several past posts on locking links in VBA. (Cribbed code is included at the footer of the message.) I would like to discover the programmatic equivalent of the manual method of locking links: Edit--->Links (Opens dialogue); Select all links, check 'Locked' box; click OK. Problems with my current VBA method: a) the original linked source file needs to be present for my code to even work. (Not the case with locking links manually.) Running code sans source file returns: "Run-time error '6083' Objects in this document contain links to files that cannot be found. The linked information will not be updated," leading to the next issue... b) With the code, Word first updates the links before setting them to Locked. Not desirable, timewise (manual locks instantaneously, vba takes 1.5 min+) & the updates are likely irrelevant to the current doc. c) The other thing that is so darn snazzy about the manual method is that it doesn't care if it is a field, shape, inline shape; it just locks the bugger. In code, I need separate processes to deal with each type of link (Probably unavoidable). Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks! Taylor P.S.     - Conditional Compilation question Hi, Is there a way to identify the version of Word using conditional compilation statements? I have a macro which requires a slight modification for Word 2003 using a command newly available in 2003 but the macro needs to be compatible with earlier versions. I don't want to run two different versions of this macro so I would prefer to use an #If statement which contains my version checking and modifications in order to be able to compile the macro on different versions of Word.     - Returning NumberFormat from a bullet Hi, I have developed a utility in VB which analyses a Word template and generates the VBA code required to recreate any outline numbering list templates which exist (useful when copying outline numbered styles from one document to another). This works a charm EXCEPT when the outline "numbers" are bullets. In most cases the NumberFormat property of the ListLevel object returns "?". What I need is to be able to retrieve the ascii value for the bullet character. Using asc(myListLevel.NumberFormat) returns 63 with is the ascii value of a question mark - not very useful :) Is there a way that I can return the correct bullet via code? I can determine the ascii values manually and slot that into the code that my utility generates but it would be nice for my program to be able to do this - after all that is what it is for!     - A macro to fix empty boxes and wrong symbols in imported WP files At the end of this message is a link to a macro that tries to fix the problem of Word files that have been imported from WordPerfect, and display either the wrong symbols or letters instead of symbols such as quotation marks and dashes. The intelligent parts of the macro are the work of Jay Freedman, Helmut Weber, Greg Maxey, and Jezebel, in answers to my pleas for help here; the candy-coating and blinking lights are by me. This macro is designed to fix the problem in which a typical symptom is this: In a file originally created in WP, the creator of the file included: "quotation marks--and a dash" but when the file is opened in a copy of Word (usually on another system), Word displays this: Aquotation marksCand a dash@ I think I finally have this macro in a condition that's suitable for testing, but ONLY on copies documents that you can afford to lose. The macro saves your file in Word for Windows 2.0 format and then reopens it. Word 2003 does not ship with the Word for Windows 2.0 converter, but you can take a copy of WNWRD232.CNV from a system with Word 2002 and move it to C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\TEXTCONV or wherever your text converters happen to be, and then restart Word (maybe restart Windows) to be able to use the WinWord 2.0 converter in Word 2003. As written, the macro converts only a limited number of characters, because each one has to be added to the macro by hand. Also, it turns out that symbols like the musical flat, sharp, and natural will convert in Word 2003 under Windows XP, but not under Word 2002 under Windows 98 SE. I *think* this is caused by differences in fonts in different versions, and I would like to add a test for the Windows version. Is there a very simple way of returning the current Windows version? The ones that I've seen out there seem extremely complicated. Here's the code. If your browser renames it with a .TXT extension, remove that; go into Word, click Alt-F11, go to the Properties inspector at the upper left, click on Normal, use Insert/Module to insert the module.
