I recently noticed there are duplicated saved documents in my files.
Specifically they are saved with an "~" mark next to them. I am assuming

Exclusion file
Got it! When I erroneously moved the file to the desktop, I realised
that may
be the problem and started all over. But then I put the *.exc file in
the same
folder as the lex file, whereas I should have put it in the same folder
as the
custom.dic file. That cured everything. Then I created a shortcut and
dragged
*that* to the desktop for easy access, so the original file was left in
the

Omitted sentences in printing
I have used Word for years! A lady of our acquaintance wanted to use it to
do a little work. Somehow, a sentence of hers got an unwanted faint dotted
line under it and when we printed her document the underlined sentence
failed to print. I erased the affected sentence plus some other characters
in the beginning and end. I then retyped the affected sentence and this
time it printed the way it was shown on the screen. What happened and how

Printing with Strikethroughs.
I am trying to print a document that has strikethroughs. On the screen it
shows the strikethroughs, but when I print they have been changed to a

form fields
I am building a form that has mulitple fields, some are short fields (date,
time,etc.) others are narrative. When I protect the form to try out the
fields I am having trouble with the narrative field expanding my document.
Bottom line is that I want to insert text into my formfield and not have it

Exclusion spell file
Hi all
Am using Word 2000 with all latest updates on W98.
I needed to exclude one word from the spell and followed all the
instructions. The main dictionary file (Australian) was in
C;\programfiles\common files\microsoft shared\PROOF
so I put my *.exc file there too. All was OK.
Then I dragged the new file from explorer to the desktop, and added two
new words. Now nothing works, even the first word (that did before). I
have deleted from the desktop (which seemed to cause the problem) and
then deleted under explorer and started all over again. Nothing works.

expanding Headers

Conditional fields
I'm just starting to appreciate and understand conditional fields in page
numbering. Although I don't at this time need to have the following
circumstances apply, I was just thinking "what if?"
Suppose I wish to have the Page 1 header of a document read "Beginning" and
the last page to read "The End" with all pages in between showing the actual
page numbers.
Could I do this all in one header or do I need to divide the document into

Exam question wrong about Word? Opinions, please!
I had an exam in which the following question was asked:

There were 4 questions, but as we were under exam conditions, I had to do a
rather clandestine screen dump to the fileserver, so I didn't get the other
two options, but there were regarding alignment, I think "paragraph
alignment" and "indent". Definitely nothing to do with it.
So, we are left with "font" and "font size".
Definitely not font. But not font size either! So, I called an invigilator
over. She scratched her head, and along came another one.
Eventually, they said "skip that question, see us after".
So, I was sent to the the Office expert, who said "Ah, this is font - the
font size is different".
She then struggled to demonstrate it on Word 2000. She was able to make a
bullet change size, but could not make the line text the SAME size as shown,
AND get the font size dropdown to show a consistant font.
We then tried it on Word 2002. This time, she was able to highlight the
bullets, and make them change size.
But this time they didn't change pattern!
She gave up and said "it must be a different version, I don't know, but the
question cannot be wrong."
This is the ONE question I got wrong (because I hadn't answered it), had
this question been possible, I would have got 100%.
Yes, I still passed, but I'd like to get it sorted properly, for the sake of
other people in the future.
So, before I make a fool of myself to the exam board, is there ANY way this
question CAN be right?
For me, it was just about the satisfaction of getting 100%, but for someone

creating online forms
Hello,
I'm trying to develop an online questionnaire to access people's
satisfaction with an assessment tool. I want to email the questionnaire to
people, ask them to fill it out, and then email it back. The only way I
found to do this is to create a webform with a 'submit' button included at
the bottom. When I formatted the submit button, I set the submit form method
to 'POST'. The email response I get back contains the information but it
includes a series of extra numbers and symbols. Two questions then,
(1) Is there an easier way of doing this?
(2) Is there some way to open the sent text file within the questionnaire
without the extra text and symbols?
I am a relatively new user and only somewhat familiar with MS Word. THis
project was dropped in my lap a few days ago and its causing me nothing but

Add to Favorites Missing in Word 2003
I've found where Suzanne Barnhill said : "Instead of adding the (Windows)
Favorites folder to the places bar, why don't you create a Favorites folder
in Word and add shortcuts to your most-used documents there, then add that

Still frustrated trying to add buttons!
It seems like adding menu command and macro buttons to my toolbars has
become specific to documents, or at least Word instances, in Word XP. I was
in Word 2000 last month, and had no problems adding a button for a menu
command or a macro to a toolbar - it would be there the next time I opened
Word, and it would be there for every document. Not so in Word XP - a
button added may not be there the next time I open a different document.
For example, I am using strike-through a lot on my current report, so I
added the button through Tools >> Customize. I can open the report doc
again and it's still there. While the report doc is open, I click New - and
the button is missing! Normal.dot has been saved a dozen times since I
added that button - but it's not there is a New doc created on Normal!
What gives??!?

preserve/keep original vertical spacing and layout after deleting paragraph or sentences
Hi,
I am working with 10 (soon to be 14 and later on 18) word.docs that are
about 25 pages each. These are kinda / sorta annual statement type
reports. Each year, certain paragraphs change substantially, are
deleted entirely (no longer applies), or new paragraphs / sentences are
inserted.
Example: say at the top of page 12, I want to delete an entire
paragraph, or a piece of it. Word automatically shifts upward
everything after what was deleted, disrupting the layout and indivdual
page headers and footers. Since these word.docs are not final, I want
the space that was occupied with what was just deleted to remain - it
may be used for a replacement paragraph or sentence later, or it will
remain blank, which is OK. I want everything that was after the area
of deletion to stay where it was originally.
These word.docs are mega-important, and ASAP turnaround is required. I
currently have 10, which will become 14, and later 18. Using the enter
/backspace /delete keys to shift things back to their original
locations, or to restore some aesthetically OK appearance (and
re-working headers / footers) is becoming increasingly time consuming
and burdensome. In short, I want the word.docs to behave as if each
page is a separate compartment - deleting a paragraph in one page will
not affect the text layout & header/footers of any subsequent pages.
If anyone can provide a solution, or anything that can at least
mitigate this problem, I would sincerely appreciate it. I have
researched this issue without success.
PS - I inherited these word.docs from prior users, and re-building from
scratch won't be an option due to time constraints.

Changing "My Data Sources"
Is everyone a robot? I just do not understand Word. I do not want my data
sources in the My Data Sources directory, I don't even know where that is.
I want it in particular place, and it's different with each merge. How can
I change it so that each time it does not default to My Data Sources and
have I have to spend 15 minutes clicking my way to where I need to go. At
the very least, have it default to My Documents.

Merging documents
Whatever happened to the simple way to merge a document in Word? I can't
even find information on it so I will be ever grateful to anyone who can
help me.
I ahve a simple document, with about 10 places where the data changes. It
is not a letter, it is not an email, it is not a fax, nor any of theo ther
documents the merge tries to make you do. The main document is a regular
document with regular information. The variable data is a regular document,
not a database. I believe I can do the main document but I can't figure out
how to do the variable document.
In the main document, I have several fields in several places as follows:
{MERGEFIELD "Email address"} or {MERGEFIELD "Section"} or {MERGEFIELD
"Color"}
My data is similar to the following:
aaa@bbb.com
Wall Dividers
Red
I seem to remember a way to enter the above data so that aaa@bbb.com always
will merge into the Email address field, so you didn't have to worry about
having exactly the right number of data, etc.. Can someone tell me how I'm

Linking to pictures
I have a document with several links to images, and now I'm getting a
message throughout the entire document Error! No Topic Specified. What does
that mean? What does that have to do with my pictures and why aren't they
appearing. I went through each picture and field code, and all the picture
files are there, but they are not displaying in the document. I spent a lot
of time doing this, it seems like I always have to redo everything when I do

Why is my scanned document different after I sent it to Word
Hello, I would like to scan a blank form into Word and be able to fill it in
over and over again with different information each time. When I scan it
using MS office scanning, it looks great and shows the ocr in the thumbnail
in the image to the left. Then I use the icon and "send to Word" at which
point the document looks different with parts of it being in the wrong place.
I don't know why this happens. Any help would be very much appreciated.

some how I put a file name on my "Normal.doc" template..

Dropdown box in "Open" dialog won't.
Not sure whether this is a Word problem or Windows, hence the crosspost.
A client of mine runs Word 2000 on XP Home. When he goes to File-Open and
clicks on the arrow next to the box that is labelled "look in", instead of a
folder tree showing, nothing happens and Word locks up.

I have two questions.

2, How do I specify my default email address in Word2003? My email address
is the "From" address. I can type my address in the From box. But I want

Perplexing Word Problem
I'm not a new user but I don't see another place to post this.
Word 2003 (from Office 2003):
When I open word and start a new blank document, my cursor is positioned
at the very top of the page, and that is where typed text is placed,
even though a one-inch top margin is set.
I am an experienced word user (since 1991), and I cannot find out what
is causing this.
I've delted normal.dot and let word recreate it, and it doesn't help.
If I go to View / Header and Footer and then immediately click close
(without doing anything), the cursor is then positioned in the proper
place, as specified by the page setup top margin.
Anyone have any ideas what is causing this?

Word HTML Emails Send Graphics as Attachments
I'm using Word to put together a newsletter that will get sent out as a HTML
email. During testing I have found that a recipient using Outlook sees it
as intended (formatting and graphics look great). A user viewing the same
email using a service such as Hotmail also sees the HTML email as intended.
However, in Hotmail any graphics that were included in the message also show
up as attachments. Is there a way to prevent the graphics from also being
sent out as attachments?

How do you turn off auto update of date field
I am using XP prof. I am unable to open up a document without the date field
of the letter head automatically updating to the current date. I am not the
original creator of these documents and they were created at a previous date.
This creates a problem because I need the documents contents to remain in

Problem with Wizard
I tried the web page wizard a few days ago but when I tried to use it
