How to get page numbers to change on additional pages?

I am trying to use page x of y. However, the page x numbe stays at 1 instead
of changing to 2, 3, etc. Please help.

It sounds like someone typed over the field with the number one. Word
uses fields (calculations) to build a page numbers, so all you have to
do is replace it with the field. Either use Insert/Field (note that
insert field contains many other cool options, so you may want to
check it out in the future) or Insert/Page Number to replace the
number with the correct field.
