Hi,
I wasn't to sure where to post this. I have a user with XP Home using
Office XP Pro. The problem is
that after I've opened up Word I'll click on the look in box to save the
document and I just hang. This is
consistant every single time I go to save a doc or try to traverse to
another folder and it hangs there.
I've renamed the Normal.dot file, I've uninstalled and reinstalled Office,
I've got all the updates for Windows
and Office, I've done a repair as well. This computer is not networked so
I'm not trying to go anywhere other
than the C:\ drive. I've got AV and I ran Spysweeper so I think I'm ok
there.

Thanks for your time,
Craig

Most common reason is that you have a dead mapped drive set up. Open Windows
Explorer and remove any redundant or inaccessible mapped drives.

Hmmmm, thanks TF, it's not a networked computer so the w/s has never had any
mapped drives.

In which case look for some other non-active folder or FPT link in Explorer.
I've not known any other cause than a dead or unobtainable link.

How about an overly full and/or badly fragmented hard drive?

This is probably as good a place as any other for your post right
now<g>.

It sounds like you have a Word or Office macro virus or something
similar.

What AV are you using, and what version?

When did you last update your AV?
If it's been more than a week, DO IT NOW! If your AV
program doesn't have some sort of Office or Word protection
scheme, it won't protect you from the types of problems I suspect
you may have.

What exactly do you mean by "hangs"?

What do you do to recover when it hangs?

Are there any other problems on the computer?

Spysweeper is OK, but it's not really enough. Although they
don't do a lot to protect Microsoft programs specifically, they
are still important and still might be able to find a problem for
you.

Adaware from www.Lavasoft.com is good; Spybot Search and Destroy
from http://www.spybot.info/ is another good one, and there are
many others too.
Unfortunately, no single spyware/malware program finds
everything so it can take three or more to get even decent
coverage. If/when you download those, IMEDIATELY UPDATE them to
their latest updates. I use the above, plus WinPatrol and they
seem to do a decent job but I also have an arsenal of others just
in case I have a problem those can't seem to solve.
Never run a scan without first checking to see if there are
updates available: They can be a complete waste of time if you
don't check for updates first.

Also, are you using a firewall? If not, you could look into the
free version of Zone Alarm at zonealarm.com; it's pretty good and
better than the Windows XP firewall.

Post back and we'll see if the added info uncovers anything else.
Also, include the EXACT wording of any error messages you get (if
you get any); they can be very very useful!

HTH,
Pop
