Just lately, when I shut down Word 2000 (running under Windows ME) a new
file is sometimes created on my desktop. It's always called " ~ " (no
extension) and it's always 173Kb ("192Kb on disk").

If I delete it, Word runs perfectly normally next time I open it; but when I
shut it down as often as not the file comes back. This seems to be doing no
harm; I just wonder why it's happening.

I generally have Internet Explorer 6.0 and Outlook Express open but
minimised during these sessions.

Any thoughts gratefully received.

I usually encounter this with Access database files, and lately with Word.
If I am working on a file, a ghost image of the file often appears in its
stored location. Try this, I'm not sure if it will work, turn off "Show
Hidden" files > Folder Options.

Bert,

I am not the only one offering this advice lately. Ignore Andre Da Costa's
stabs in the dark.

See:
http://www.gmayor.com/what_to_do_when_word_crashes.htm and you will have a
better understaning of what is happening behind the scenes in Word.

It's a file related to your OE address book and is a known problem,
albeit an inconsequential one.
Ignore it.

RWN,

Thanks for providing this information. I was so eager to head off the left
field field recommendation to change folder options posted by Mr. Da Costa
that I boinked one in shallow left myself :-(

You're welcome.
Actually, I sometimes feel as though I'm way out in left field :-)
