    - Document is not appearing I am using Word 2002. Everything worked fine until all of a sudden when I try to open word documents nothing is there. I can open folders but when I click on a document the upper border with the file name appears at the top of the screen and the document button appears in the task bar but the document doesn't appear. I click on the top X to close the document and the top file name and the button on the task bar go away. What is causing this? How can I fix it?     - Need help moving diagram between documents If anyone can help me, I would be most grateful. I created a diagram (using Word 2000) which consists of several rectangular Autoshapes plus text, lined up using tabs, with headings and arrows leading from text to Autoshapes. Now I want to use the diagram in other documents, but when I copy and paste, elements jump into new positions. I tried grouping, creating an autotext entry out of the diagram, and various paste options, nothing seemed to work. How can I preserve the diagram and use it in other documents, as created?     - Single-space to Double Space I started a long manuscript document with single-space line spacing. New paragraphs were double-spaced by hitting return twice. Now I need the document double-spaced but I don't want the each new paragraph quadruple-spaced. Also there are chapters within the document requiring special formatting. They need to begin with the first paragraph of each chapter about 1/3 down the page with a chapter heading. Also the first paragraph of the new chapter should not be indented.     - Quotations--Straight and Curly I'm using Word 2002 from the Office XP package. I'm working on a long manuscript of a novel. I guess I started out with the Autocorrect quotation marks straight-to-curly unchecked. Then at some point I must have checked the auto-correct feature. Now the document has some straight--some curly quotation marks seemingly at random. I've followed the instructions to change all straight quotes to curlies to no avail. I chose Replace in the Edit menu with ' or " on both lines in the dialogue box and clicked on replace all with straight to curly checked in auto-correct. It doesn't find any of the straight quotes and doesn't correct them. I've tried this operation with the whole document selected and not selected. No dice either way.     - If fields and page numbering in mail merge documents Hello, Word 2002 SP1: I have a mail merge document where one of the merged fields changes all the time. If it is too big to fit on one page, it is automatically goes to the next page, etc.. etc.. In the footer I have the following { IF { PAGE } > 1 "PAGE { PAGE }" ""} statement. If I do not perform mail merge the above statement working fine, but I soon as I merged it stops working and { page } = 1 all the time.     - Problems with Winword and a *.dll file All of a sudden, while saving a document with many Spanish language words that I entered using their <Alt>-xxx ASCII equivalent characters, I continuously get a page fault by Winword on some file named MS09.dll. I did a search on MS09.dll (including the MS knowledge base page) and could not find anything related to MS Word and the dll. Only docs I found dealt with Outlook Express causing a similar page fault on MS09.dll, with the proposed solutions dealing with OE-specific files. Other results led to Excel and Win2000 causing the same problem. I'm using Win98SE w/MS Office Professional 2000 and have used this system for several years without this problem occurring before. The front page should contain a title and some pictures. The second page an introduction.     - clipart - download/viewer Hello All, I click clipart online which lead me the the gallery. Select the pictures. Click download. Prompted to save to disk. Click OK. Now it is in D:/business. How do I export this single file with earlier selected pictures to Word so I can use it? Prior checking at Word- download clips didn't show the new clips.     - default values of page setup? I have written a program that creates a document. When I try to open the document with my MSWord (OfficeXP) it is displayed correctly. But when I open the same document at my friends computer, the format becomes bad. Using WIN 2000 Pro; NTFS, with Office 2000 (updates up to date on both). = =20 I have found that the system is somehow retaining obsolete summary = information about obsolete (and indeed long deleted and vanished) files = that had Summary pages.     - Windows and styles I have been converting from word 97 to word 2002 for windows xp I have two problems that I'd like to fix if possible. First Is there any way that I can get word to open multiple document windows in the same parent window instead of two completely separate instances? I often have two documents side by side in word. I "alt-tab" to another program. When I want to "alt-tab" back to word, I have to do it twice. I know that I can just click on the icons on the task bar, but I find the keyboard much faster. Second I use paragraph styles. In word 97, I could change paragraph styles by pressing 'alt-o-s', the first letter of the style that I want (say N for normal) and enter. When I do this in word 2002, a style window opens up and stays open after I select the style that I want. I then must close that window. I can see that this would be handy if I wanted to browse the document and change styles at will. But to change one paragraph, its a drag.     - Shortcut Keys I previously posted a question re: shortcut keys in Word 2002. I stated that the combination of Ctrl+Home should take me to the "Start of Document". However, this combination instead calls up the "Find and Replace" box. I have checked in "Customize Keyboard"..Categories" .. All Commands" ..Commands, "Startofdocument" ... and verified that the combination of Ctrl+Home is assigned, as it should be, to "Start of Document", yet the program doesn't work that way. Since the proper combination of keys is assigned as indicated, what else could be causing me to get the "Find and Replace" box? I can't reassign the keys, as suggested in one reply, as they are already correctly assigned.     - Dyamic Text Based On Section Titles Hi Everyone, This is a little hard for me to explain, but I'll give it a go. I'm trying to create a document that at the top (in the header) you have a bunch of information: ex. Name of Company {Section Title} ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------ Contents Prev. { PAGE} Next Where {Section Title} is, I would like text to be inserted there based on what section the person is in. The document I'm editing is very long (about 400 pages), and this will eventually be converted into PDF. So I don't want to have to write out the section titles for a large amount of sections. Is there a way of doing this? If so how? I've tried my hand at using Fields and thier codes, but nothing works. Eventually, when creating the PDF, I would like all the links and such to be created from the Word file so I don't hve to edit the PDF to do all these links.     - Re: Code to return exactly the same file size as Properties dialog Is it possible that my macro is more accurate than the Properties dialog and Explorer? In every instance I've tested, the Propertes dialog in rounding off the size of the file in MBs to the form #.## MB doesn't properly round the number but simply leaves the hundredths column as it is, regardless of the value in the thousandths column. So for example a raw MB size of 1.228027 is correctly resolved by my macro as 1.23MB, while the Properties dialog shows it as 1.22 Yet a raw MB of 1.49414 MB is shown correctly as 1.49, both by my macro and the Properties dialog. Of course, it's possible that my raw MB number, derived by dividing the bytes by 1048576, is incorrect, and that Windows is using a different raw MB number.     - derive kilobytes from bytes Is there a formula to convert bytes to kilobytes, which would work with any number of bytes? I want this for a macro in which I save a backup copy of a template, and at the end of the macro I display a msgbox with some information including the size of the newly saved template. I want this to be in the same format that you see in the File Properties dialog, with both the bytes and the kilobytes. The problem is that this involves more than simply dividing the number of bytes by 1.024 to get the number of kilobytes. That computation works with smaller files, but not with larger files.     - After updating OEM Word 2002 to Retail Office XP Serial Numbers did not change. Hi, I recently upgraded my office products. I had MS Office 2000 Pro installed on my computer. I also had Word 2002 installed as it came with the computer and is an OEM version. I recently upgraded to MS Office XP Pro Developers edition. When opening MS Word 2002 the opening screen shows the OEM serial number.     - Moving data from Word document to Works database I am trying to move some of my wife's recipes from an old PS1 to a Works database. (They are in an application program and not accessible electronically) I have printed the recipes and have scanned them in. I am working for a health and safety company and have been charged with the mammoth task of tidying up all of the templates that they use, and making them into generic formats. Today I came across a document (letter) that said, "Dear
Gregory," and the first four letters of "Gregory" were
gray and the other three were not. Nowhere else in the
letter did this or any other field code appear.

No amount of clicking has so far led me to identify what
it could have been. I would ask the author, but I don't
want him to know how much more advanced he is than I!

Can you help me disguise my lack of knowledge about it?

Try highlighting the word then SHIFT-F9. If it is a field you'll see
the field definition.

Maybe whoever started the letter typed Greg in the field then went back
and added the 'ory'.
