How to create index in word presentation

Does anyone know of a easy step by step guide with print screens about
creating an index in a word document.

Thanks Neil, your tutorial is good and I created the index. There is however
one detail I am mystified - and don't see the hint. The Index is sorted
alphabetically and not according to page numbers. I would be grateful if you
can show me what I missed out.

I do have another question, I do not see why in one document I could sort
according to number, and in the second one I can't. There is only the option
of Field 1 and paragraph. If I change the type to number I get an error
message.

An "index" sorted according to page numbers is a TOC. See
