In some cases my spell checker does not correct mistakes. I've used all the
hints in the Microsoft Word Help and it still skips errors. This is true both
with automatic spell checking as I type and also when I use the F7 key. If I
create a new document, spell checking works fine. The problem occurs in
documents made with some templates other than Normal.dot. Any ideas?

Sure, Ron. Likely, the styles used in the template and subsequent documents
don't have proper language settings. You may want to create a new paragraph
IN the template, based on a style, then check Tools-Language on it. Make
sure "do not proof" is NOT checked.

Thanks for the help but I'm afraid that didn't work. I've also noticed that
my thesaurus is not working in this document, but it works in other
documents. Does this suggest something????

Same cause. Select the entire document (Ctrl+A), then go to Tools | Language
| Set Language. Make sure that the appropriate language is selected and that
"Do not check spelling or grammar" is not checked.

Thanks for the help, but the probelm is somewhere else. I check single
paragraphs and the whole document but I still see in Language settings that
the "Do not check speeling and grammar" box is unchecked. Also, I'm using New
Time Roman, so it's not a font problem, and the style Langauge box is also
unchecked. What else might cause this????? Any ideas????

Check the styles you're using, Ron. Make sure the style is not set to no
proofing.

When you're in the Language settings box, which language is activated? Is it
English (or whichever language you want to use)? Or is it something else? What
if you try applying the language you want to use (Ctrl+A, then click on the
English dialect you prefer).

If, for example, the document were formatted with Dutch, and Dutch is not an
activated language on your system, spell check would simply skip text formatted
with the unactivated language.
