    - Ghost window on XP Word I have a user who has this bar of info that lays on top of documents. It remains stationary when the user scrolls up and down and usualy contains a slice of another document. Don't know why this shows up but when I select new window it disappears.     - Search & replace problem I have some documents with a lot of spaces in them, (because they are reports output by some old software).     - Copying to a new document and then print warning I find that often when I copy data from one document and paste it into a new document and then attempt to print that data that I am given the warning: "The margins of section 1 are set outside the printable area of the page. Do you want to continue?" I have tried several solutions to avoid this warning, such as: 1. In the new blank document, I have pressed the ENTER key several times hoping to leaving the previous formatting behind. 2.     - How to deactivate I bought Office XP for students and teachers for college. I installed it on to my PC at home and activated it. Just recently I bought a laptop for school and installed it onto my new laptop. After using it for alittle while the program froze and every time I tried to press a key a caption came up on the bottom of my screen saying; 'This command is not available because the document is locked for edit.' I tried everything possible and then I discovered that I needed to activate it on my laptop, but it wouldn't let me because it was already activated on my other computer at home.     - styles I followed shauna kelly's explanation of numbering to the letter (I think). I am getting the following problem 1 1.1 1.2 1.3 1.4 4.1.1 The third header doesn't follow properly. The only thing that doesn't work in terms of Shauna's directions is that when I select "Previous Level Number" and try to indicate that the level before Level 2 is Level 1 and so on it does not allow the level to stay selected.     - Word Count I am writing a document for university with a strict word limit. This limit includes the main text only, and not text related to pictures, headings, references and certain other parts of the document. I would like to know what is and is not included in the word count (for example are headers and footers, or text in text boxes included), and is there any way I can get it to only count words in text of my choice (blocks of text I need to count are interrupted by other text that I don't need to count) or am I going to have to do it by hand?     - Word freezing I am having a problem with Word 2000. Everytime I try to open a file it freezes my computer, gives me a variety of error messages, like I am dangerously low on resources. I have tried rebooting, shutting off antivirus (using msconfig) but to no avail. This is not a new installation. I can open other office files, there isn't a problem on other machines with my network, and I tried reinstalling word. I thought about bad ram, but so many other large files, and mutliple files will open. I have also ran scandisk and scanned for virus' (updates downloaded daily). Any ideas?     - Word is Word is bad in XP? I have a new computer running XP. I have been 2 days now trying to get either Word / Excel 97 or Word / Excel 2000 to run in XP. The 97 version has so many little quirks I know it is not working right. When you go to Format\Fonts for example, only the first letter of the font name will display. Same with the size - select a 12 point and it w show '1'. This is just and example. The 2000 version opens and then shuts down with some long message about sending a report to Microsoft. Am I the only one w these problems? Solutions? If I was assured Office XP Standard would work I would buy it but suspect the problem is deeper than that.     - Can't Print Word Attachment When I open a Word file that I open as an email attachment or from a template program I cannot print the document. The button bars blink. I can't even close the document without going through Ctrl-Alt-Del. When I do that there's some little message in the list of running programs that says, essentially, "you can't close this window while a dialog box is open." I can't SEE any dialog box. Just blinking bars. I had this issue with WordPerfect documents. I could save the attachment, then open WP, then open the document and print. Some kind soul on the Corel user group told me how to solve that issue. (I have zero recall of what the fix was.) Now it's happening with Word. Is this an either/or proposition?     - Task Pane will not display by default when Wood 2002 opens. The Task Pane will not display by default when Microsoft Word 2002 opens. I have gone to Tools>Options and under Show I have checked Startup Task Pane. This does not cause the Task Pane to display by default when Microsoft Word 2002 opens. I have also gone to Tools>Customize>Toolbars to see if there was an option there for displaying the Task Pane on startup. There is not. Isn't there supposed to be such an option here?     - lining up graphics with text I am creating a form which needs check boxes in front the text. The problem is the boxes I created don't always line up with text, they are either slightly above or below the horizontal line of the text.     - Left and right aligned text in same line Hello - working on my resume and would like to have a line of text that is both left aligned and right aligned. For example, my name on the left hand side and my phone number on the right hand side.     - Linking powerpoint drawings into a Word document (or vice versa): Word hangs Hi all, the deliverables for our current software project include a design document as well as a presentation to deliver at the end of the project (sounds familiar...?). The presentation is more or less done, and now I am writing the document. But of course I would like to spare me the work of having to draw all kinds of sketches again in Word and so I would like to "hot link" some of the drawings from the PPT presentation into the Word document. This seems to be more difficult than I had expected! While it is possible to "Edit => Paste Special" => Paste Link" an entire slide, this is of course not what I want, since that includes the slide's header, footer, etc. which looks completely cheap and unprofessional. I only want the drawing being pasted! But when I try to paste the drawing only the "Paste Link" option is grayed out and I can only insert a *copy* of the current picture into the document. If I modify the picture on the slide later (which is almost 100% likely to happen) then I would have to repeat this process. Funny enough - the inverse seems possible, a drawing created in Word using "Insert => Object... => Office Drawing Object" can be hot-linked into a PPT slide using Copy & Edit => Paste Special => "Insert Link". If only I had known that before! Because, as a work-around to this asymmetry I tried to move some pictures over to Word and then hot-link them in the other direction. But this causes all kind of weird effects. Some seem to be full-blown bugs (e.g. for no apparent reason some arrow-tips are suddenly HUGE while most others are perfectly fine. Elements that have filling effects (patterns or transparency are filled with solid black, etc.), others are probably due to the fact, that graphic elements and texts obviously are not scaled alike, i.e. after pasting the text inside boxes changes has a different size relative to its surrounding elements, such that some texts suddenly don't fit their boxes or circles any more, others are wrapped at stupid places, etc. As workaround I tried to paste the stuff as Extended Meta File (.emf). While this at first seemed to work perfect, as soon as one wants to edit that picture, Word declares that to do so it has to convert that picture into an Office Drawing Object and ask whether one wants to do so. If clicking OK Word starts consuming 95+ percent CPU and hangs there. I tried a couple of times, also with different drawings but always with the same effect. Once I tried and left it running, to see whether it maybe completes after some longish period time, but after half an hour I gave up and killed it. So, what other options are there? * Is there some other way to hot-link a PowerPoint drawing into Word? * If not: what options do I have to move or convert an existing ppt drawing into Word, such that I can later also edit it there?     - footnotes I have received back a Spanish translation of my book which already contained many Spanish citations. So what I did when I sent the manuscript to the translator was to cut out all these citations since he didn't have to translate them. Now I am trying to paste these citations back into the translated text but the ones that have a footnote attached to it don't continue the numeration of the text but begin with what seems to be a random footnote number.     - Prinitng on index cards In MS Word 2000, I cannot seem to print on index cards landscape. I have tried every combination of landscape and portrait settings both in the page setup as well as the printing options. It either prints out portrait, or the printer completely misses the card and tries to print as if it's an 8.5" x 11".     - Run Word in XP ? I just built new computer with Win XP. I installed Office 97(only Word, Excel, & Office Tools). Could hardly open programs, all sorts of problems. Then I uninstalled 97 and installed Office 2000 - same three selections. Was marginally better but you could tell it still was not right. Then downloaded the three recommended patches to run in XP. This program is now better, still not right. just for example, when I use the space bar it moves letter by letter. Will not scroll left or right quickly.     - Font(s) I scanned a document and pasted the text into a Word document. That text came in as Courier (not courier new) ... however, small patches of text somehow got Courier New attached to them. COURIER is NOT in the drop down font list ... COURIER NEW is! Now, while both LOOK the same on the screen, when I PDF the document, there is a BIG difference in appearance. COURIER comes out nice and dark and sharp.     - autocorrection options won't stay I'm really tearing my hair out. I know I've asked before, but I still haven't seen an answer. How do I get my autocorrection selections to STAY selected the next time I open Word? I've discovered that Word seems to have three separate memories, one for the "regular" Word, one for the Word that opens via Outlook to write an email, and one for the Word that opens via Outlook to Reply to an email. I have a problem with MS Work from the Works suite. Every
application works fine, but when I try to open Word it
frezes the computer. I do Cntrl+alt+Del and a message
comes back that the System is dangerously low in resources
and need to close WinWord.
I can't be low in resources. I have 512MB ram and more
than 6Gig available in the hard drive. All my other
applications can open. What's wrong with Word????
I have tried unistalling from the Add remove programs and
installing it again...and still the same problem.
Maybe is the registry that is messed up, but I don't know
where to look. Any suggestions?
