I know I'm going to feel like an idot when someone points-out the obvious,
but...

After (hapilly, for the most part) using Office 2003 for several weeks,
I've turned-off the "getting started" task pane in the applications.

By unchecking "Startup task pane" from Tools|Options|View in Excel, for
example, it no longer appears when I start the program.

But it doesn't work in Word 2003!?!?

It doesn't matter if "Startup task pane" is checked or unchecked in Word,
it always appears on startup!?!?

What am I missing?

See http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/Customization/ShowTaskPane.htm. The Task
Pane Controller will do what you want.

Hi, Tom,

You aren't missing something obvious. The task pane needs to be beaten
about the head with a small hammer. <g>

Get the Task Pane Controller from
http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/Customization/ShowTaskPane.htm to do the
job.

Quite a novelty this one, as I had to use the tool suggested by Suzanne &
Jay on my desktop machine, but on my laptop with the same operating system
and Office version it works as intended :(

Is your laptop missing some add-in (such as Acrobat's) that the desktop has?

The only difference is that the laptop doesn't have the Finereader add-in,
but this made no difference to the desktop machine whether or not it was
installed there. An early version of Beth's FieldCalcSecurityLevelUI.dot
prevented the task pane controller entry from appearing in the tools menu on
the desktop, but this has been fixed with an update.

It is just one of those odd little quirks of fate that I have yet to pin
down :)

Thank you, Jay and Suzanne. That certainly did the trick! I had Acrobat
(6.0 Professional) installed, and the utility worked "as advertised."

And thank you all for the great support here! I always feel like a fool
asking questions in the Outlook groups, where the stock answer would have
been, "That is by design" with no further explanation <smile>

Thanks that worked well. That's the second utility I have used from
mvps.org, the other one disable the F-lock key on my microsoft
keyboard. Who are you guys?
