Would someone please take a moment to explain why, in the
styles task pane of later Word versions, the option
to "Update to match selection" is sometimes grayed out? I
got some great info about configuring styles options (from
S. Barnhill--thanks Suzanne), but I still would like to
know why this option is grayed out when I right-click a
style name, and what I can do to get around it. On the fly
and on others' computers, I don't always want to change
their settings in tools | options (even if this would fix
it). The only option I've researched is whether the
style "types" are incompatible (i.e., char vs. par), but I
think it happens to me even when those are the same.

Thank you all so much.

From my limited experiments this option seems to (a) not be available for
Normal style (not surprising, as you can't update Normal by example even in
the conventional way from Word 97 forward) and (b) not be available for any
style if you have "Prompt to update style" checked in Tools | Options |
Edit.
