Hidden Folders
I back up selected files and folders to a portable Iomega USB 250GGB hard
drive, using Iomega backup software "Iomega Automatic Backup Pro" The
software lets you create a backup data set folder into which the desired
files and folders to be backed up are copied into. You can create multiple
backup sets, and I currently have four.
But for some reason, while the older three display and behave normally, the
most recent backup set folder does not appear in My Computer or Windows
Explorer. However, I'm certain the backup folder is present on the drive,
for the following three reasons:
1. When I request a backup to that folder, during the copy process the
Iomega software provides a running list of files being backed up
2. During backup, the external hard drive is in continuous read/write
motion, and finally
3. I used Properties to check the hard drive capacity before and after. It
increased by about 7 GB, the approximate volume of the other backup sets.
So why do three appear, while the fourth is invisible. I've checked to
ensure that folder options display both hidden and system files. Is there
some other way a folder could remain hidden?
Or should I pay Iomega their $25 pound of flesh for tech support?

Office Shortcuts -- Slow To Start
When I launch Excel or Word from a shortcut it takes forever to bring up the
program (60 to 90 sec). If I launch either program and then open the
document their is no delay. I have reinstalled Office, but it did not help.
I am running Office 2K on an XP (SP2) machine with 2GB of memory.
Any ideas?

i to remove default return address on envelope
hello i have read how to remove the return address on an envelope which i
swhat i would like to do, but i cannot see the options tools ETC in word
2007, to remove, the address i used was not in my address book, just a from

no spell check in word - 2007
Hi there.
Word is not helping me at all. It seems as if Word has no spell checker
installed. I even un-installed the whole package with no luck.
Words spelled incorrectly aren't marked red and therefor no option to
correct it.
Another funny thing is that New documents after opening word, start at
Document2.
Hope someone can help me.

Is there any way to get Word to automatically update the entire table
of contents when field are updated?
When I print or if I manually update fields, I always get this prompt.

Word 2007 margin problems
I just updated to Word 2007 and when finished typing I turn my word docs in
and then they are to get converted to WP 5.1 is this compatible or possible.
Also while typign my margins need to be set at 1" but when I go to tab and
turn my work in it is moving my margins where I had tabs.
For example
AdvLft 1"
L/R margin: 2", 1"
Any ideas for this? Am I supposed to change the style set of what I am
typing in?

Changing the Color of Table Lines (?)
In a rather complex table in Word 2002, I'd like to change
all of the line colors from black to blue (without getting
black and blue myself) in one easy step, but I don't see a
way of doing this.

How do I avoid wasting space with a large picture in my document?
Hello,
I have a Word document (Word 2003 if it makes any difference), and I
want to insert a flowchart that I created in PowerPoint as a picture.
The flowchart is pretty much the full size of a sheet of paper.
My problem is that if I insert the picture, it goes into the text where
I inserted it. Normally this is exactly what I want, but in this case, I
would prefer it if the text before and after the picture would move
around to fill up the space before the picture, rather than leaving a
(potentially) large amount of space on the last page before the picture.
Can this be done? If so, how?
I hope this is clear. If anyone has any ideas, I would be very grateful.

Our church office has begun using MS Word 2002 to email a newsletter, using
the File>>Send To>>>Mail Recipient function. So far, no complaints, but I
was asked a couple questions I couldn't answer - What happens if the
recipient does not have Word installed? How about incompatibility between
Word versions? I can't find any incompatibility issues on the computers I've
checked, but I cannot find anybody who does not have Word installed on their

Can't delete file after rename/save as
So I am going about converting my .doc files to .docx files. (I don't
know the compelling logic behind the change of extension, but it has
definitely been a big productivity boost for me.)
I load a .doc file and "Save as" ,docx. Now I have 2 files with the
same name and a different extension.
Since I opened it from Explorer, I just Alt-Tab back and try to delete
the old one. But it won't let me do that. Even thogh Word is no longer
editing the old one, the error message says that it is. I have to
close the new one before I can delete the old one.
Do these guys do any testing at all?
Is there a utility that will convert all of the docs in a folder to
the new format and erase the old ones?
I tried just renaming it, but then Word is too stupid to load it. Too
simple and obvious, I guess.
Anyone have a better method? I have several thousand to do.
I am actually starting to like at least some of the new features, but
the migration plan is a disaster. Arrogance or stupidity.

Setting options globally (2007)
I am having trouble getting settings to apply to *ALL* documents.
Perhaps I need a tutorial on global vs local settings.
If I change some setting, how do I know whether it applies to thay
document, to all documents based on that template, or all documents
period?
The settings I just struggled with are (a) display hidden text and (b)
a printer option to display all colors as black. In both cases, I
changed the settings in one document, but would like them to apply to
all documents. I have thousands of documents and dozens of templates.
I really don't want to change them all manually.

I have to create a mail merge button which when clicked will merge specific

Lighter shade of grey for fields?
Is there way that I can set a lighter shade of grey for fields?
When I move the cursor into a table of contents, for example, the grey
is so dark that my old eyes can barely read the entries. I would like

can lost doc be recovered from system?
I just purchased a laptop w/Vista OS. I have a Western Digital external USB
hard driive connected where I save all of my Word Docs. I installed Office
XP on this laptop w/Vista OS and began editing a doc. I worked many, many
hours on the doc and a message appeared telliing me it could not save a .tmp
file. The document is now lost. I saved it about every 3-5 minutes while
working on it. It is no longer on my external WD hard drive. I hope it is
still recoverable somehow from the computer. I have searched everywhere for
both the name of the original file AND the name of the .tmp file that is
lost. I then copied the entire WD HD contents to the desktop and it copied
all files except this .tmp file. That is how I was able to get the name of
the file, when I was informed that it could not be copied to the new
location. Can anyone please advise how I can search on the computer for a
backup copy of this file. Needless to say, I began revising the doc as soon
as I got the computer before enabling any backup system!

I have quite a few templates that I used in office 03 and now that
upgraded to office 07 they don't display right. A simple one pag
background in 03 is not 17 pages in 07 and what you see is thousands o
small squares on every page.

Copying macros, keybord shortcuts, icons from 2000 to 2007?
Just installed 2007 on new computers. Had been using 2000.
I had 8-10 fairly simple macros. What the best way to get them over to
Word 2007 on the new computers? Both PCs are networked. Should I open
the VBA editor on 2000, paste the macro text into a shared file, then
open the VBA editor on the 2007 PC, and copy-and-paste the macro text
into that editor?
Some were assigned to keyboard shortcuts. Do I just reassign those
manually?
I had defined 4-5 custom toolbar icons such a adding "..." to the New,
Save, and Print icons to get them to open up their dialog boxes. How
can I copy those custom icons over?

Unable to open Word Document by double click ?
I am new to Office 2003. I find that when I double click a Word document,
only Word 2003 is opened but not the document.
On the other hand, for Excel 2003 and PowerPoint 2003, both application and
Excel / PowerPoint documents are opened.

Opening View is set too small
This is only one of many issues I am having with Word 2003 SP2...when I open
word the default view is 45% so I have to change to 100% before I start
typing. Also (2nd problem) I have grey tick marks which were addressed in a

How to enter an unusual fraction the way the usual ones print.
If you've gone nuts trying to get your fractions to enter the same in
Microsoft Word whether they are the general fractions (ie. 1/4, 1/2, 3/4 . .
.) or the less used fractions (ie. 5/6, 7/9, 15/16 et al.) here's how.
-Insert your cursor in the postion you want the fraction to apear.
-From your Insert menu, select Symbols.
-From the resulting pop up select Font: Palatino Linotype
-Select Subset: Superscripts and Subscripts
-Select the number(s) in the list of raised numbers to fill in your
numerator position and click on Insert after each.
-Select the slash and click Insert.
-Select the denominator number(s) as before except from the list that is
postioned lower in the display box and click Insert as before.
-Close the window.
-You now have your fraction entered with the numerator on the top of the
denominator.
