If the option is not saving, see
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/MissingMenusEtc.htm.

Also, note that existing documents won't be affected by changing the default
save format. You can convert an existing document to Word 2007 format via
Office button | Convert.

Tried changing the Registry it did not work.

The problem is, everytime i save the doc in default save option (ie., 2007
.docx), a message pops-up "......may cause changes in the layout of the
document". Ofcourse the message can be turned off but I am keen to known how
that would affect my work.

One minor thing that comes to mind is that a document converted to *.docx
format from *.doc does not support changing fonts and colors via Change
Styles on the Home tab (but you can change the paragraph styles directly, so
that shouldn't be a problem). If you press the Tell Me More button in the
message box you will get more information.
