I have two different icons (somehow) in the left side of the taskbar, next
to the start button. One of them work fine and its smart tag says "Mic.
Office Word 2003". The other one is very strange. When I hit it, I can a
dialog box saying that Windows in installing Word, and it takes much longer
to start Word. The smart tag says "Description: Microsoft Office Word." I
can' t delete this icon since trying to do so threatens to delete the
program itself. That's what I'm warned about. What's going on?

Howard,

Just a stab. Do you still have a previous version of Word on your computer?
If you left a an earlier version installed, I suspect this second icon is
attempting to start that version which triggers the installer (unless you
have a dual boot computer or a virtual machine you can only run one version
at a time). Look in Control Panel>Add Remove Programs and see if you can
uninstall any previous version.

Hi Howard,

If you right click on the icon and choose properties does
it show a path location to Office?

Do the shortcuts in Start=>All Programs work?

Deleting a shortcut usually won't delete the program although some of the messages are poorly worded. If it did and you have the CD
a repair or install should resolve that.
