Getting rid of indent lines within page
I have noticed that suddenly I have indent marks with in the page bod
of my documents. Something I clicked on by accident I am sure! Ho
can I get rid of these things?
For an example, I have attached a screen shot of the offending mark
(they are both top and bottom of page)

Hello. every second or third dime I open MS word, I have to pot in my office
xp small business cd because I says it is installing "Microsoft feature." It
doesn't say what it is. I tried having everything run from the computer to

A file named "~" created on shutdown
Just lately, when I shut down Word 2000 (running under Windows ME) a new
file is sometimes created on my desktop. It's always called " ~ " (no
extension) and it's always 173Kb ("192Kb on disk").
If I delete it, Word runs perfectly normally next time I open it; but when I
shut it down as often as not the file comes back. This seems to be doing no
harm; I just wonder why it's happening.
I generally have Internet Explorer 6.0 and Outlook Express open but
minimised during these sessions.
Any thoughts gratefully received.

OVERSIZED first letter of first word...
Not sure what the proper terminology is for this.
In books, when the first letter is larger than the rest of the text and
stands 3 or 4 lines tall in alignment with the 3 or 4 lines of text next to
it.
Where the +'s represent the first letter("T") in the example below:
+++++ his is the first line of text, et cetera............
+ the continuation of the line of text above...
+ the continuation of the line of text above...
+ the continuation of the line of text above...
How is this effect best achieved? The only way I've found is with a single

Screen tips
I have just upgraded to Word 2002 and after much fiddling
around I have established that if I can use screen tips to
view comments by hovering over the commented text.
However, I use the same package at home and at work but
the two behave differently. At work the screen tip remains
visible as long as I keep the cursor over the commented
text. At home the screen tip flashes up but then
disappears again before I've had time to read it. It
doesn't appear again unless I move the cursor away and
back again but I still can't read it. I've looked at all
the options but I can't see anything obviosuly diffeerent
between the two set ups. Does anyone have any idea what I
need to do to be able to see the comments on my machine at

Automatic date formatting?
I'm editing a document where the date is given in the MM/DD/YYYY
format. Our style guidelines call for the MMMM D, YYYY style in the
body text format, but the MM/DD/YYYY style in table cell text format.
I am looking for a quick and easy fix that would find dates in body
text format, and automatically change them to the right format.
I tried a number of search terms in Google Groups to find a solution
to this, for surely I am not the first person to want this. I found a
number of references to setting the default date format, which would
be find in the documents I write, but doesn't seem to help with
documents other people write.
Am I searching for the impossible? Has someone written a macro that
would cover this? I'd appreciate any help the Word mavens here could
give me, and I'll keep checking back to check for possible solutions.

Unwanted passwords
I'm having trouble clearing unwanted saved passwords from my computer. It has remembered embedded passwords from some FTP links sent to me and now I cannot access new FTP pages because of this. I've gone into Explorer - Content - Clear Passwords, I've cleared my cookies, cleared temp internet pages...but I can't find where it's putting all these passwords it has saved.

Word 97, File save folder, lockable?
Hello all, I am in a dilemma,
I live with 2 teenage boys, both of whom are studying the same course at
middle school, they save their work in their own default mydocuments folders
that were created when their users were made. But they can browse in word to
the other's folder. The elder now has the habit of inserting words and
pictures in the younger's homework. is there any way in word to lock the
browser window to root at \windows\profiles\danny\my documents for danny and
of course david's for david so they cant browse above it to change the other's

Going to headings and returning from headings via table of contents
Is it possible to return to table of contents by using
bookmarks in table of contents field and not lose
bookmarks when updating table of contents field when
adding, deleting, etc., headings and subheadings in the

date calculations in forms
Hi All
i am trying to set up a word form that calculates the number of days
between two dates (stored as two bookmarked fields 'start' & 'finish')
i've set calculate on exit on both and a third field called 'days' as
a calculation field with the formula =finish-start
when it sort-of works (doesn't always) it gives a wrong answer e.g.
start = 1/1/04
finish = 2/1/04
days = .25
i know that this can also be done using vba and the datediff function
but i would like to avoid that solution.
any ideas - using word 2002

Print Layout question
I apologize if this is going in the wrong place. I have my Word set fo
Print layout. For the life of me, I cannot understand what I did, bu
there are marks in each corner. I can't get rid of them. They loo
like two lines joined at right angles and they frame each corner wher

Recreate customised normal.dot
Hi
I am creating a desktop image for my organisation (500 users) and nee
to customise normal.dot. I have done this and it works fine. What
want to do is find the location where normal.dot is created from so i
a user deletes normal.dot, it gets recreated.
We are running windows XP running Office 2000 SP3
I found a normal.fmt file where Im assuming it gets created from. Ca
anyone see an issue if I copy normal.dot over normal.fmt? The fil
sizes are quite different. Is this the way to ensure newly create
normal.dot files are the same? This issue only exists as by defaul

Copying Footnote Separators to other templates?
I have a large number of templates, already created, all of which NEE
identical footnote separators and continuation notices.
If I create one template with separators we like, how can I copy the

2 page document, 2nd page different
I am composing a merge document in Microsoft Word 2002.
The second page of this two page document is supposed to be identica
to the first page (the same information will be merged into the secon
page as the first page)EXCEPT that I want to have the word "COPY" as
watermark or a backgroud on the SECOND page ONLY. Can anyone tell m
how to set this up?
I've tried these two approaches so far:
first
turn on in page set up/layout/different first page, try setting u
watermark while on the second page
second
insert section break at the top of the second page, then vie
header/footer, and de-select "same as previous", next set up watermark
Both of these result in a watermark on BOTH the first and second page
Is there a better way to print a document with the second page labelle
as a "copy" of the first page?

Stop merge documents question
In this particular environment we do not want to merge revisions to documents. We want to keep them in a separate document. How do we escape the annoying question everytime we open a document? Delete? Full Screen Message Box
Using Word XP. When I go to Full Screen a message box appears - not in the
corner out of the way - no, no - that would be logical. Its smack in the middle
of the page - EVERY time I have to move this thing out of the way. Is there

Can't Insert Text Box in Word 2002
I am running Word 2002 under Windows XP.
Yesterday, I discovered that I cannot insert a text box in a Word document.
Every time I try, I get an error message and Word goes into recovery mode.
I have had this version of Word for over a year and have inserted text boxes
many times with no problem.
Is it something I did or something I installed? I did install MSN 9 Dial Up
and Roxio Easy CD & DVD Creator 6 recently.

"Intelligent hyperlink" - searches
I'd like to know if this can be done in word, or which
program this can be done in: (I don't think word is
powerful enough to do it)
1. you have several documents
2. in any of these documents you want to be able to do
a "phrase / word" search that on clicking a "hyperlink"
or "whatever" takes you automatically to a menu that
lists all document locations - of all documents of this
set of documents, that contain the "phrase / word"
3. I know you could create a document and manually list
these links - and then create links to these documents.
But then links would somehow have to be created to return
to the original place.
4. But I don't know of any "intelligent hyperlink search"
capabilities.

Delete text between two bookmarks
Can some one help me out with the VBA coding that will enable me to
delete the text between 2 bookmarks?
For example:

I want to delete between Text1 & Text2.
There was another posting regarding defining "Just a test" as a
bookmark and just selecting and deleting that bookmark. My document is
well established and redefining bookmarks would be too time consuming.

Margins
Hey everyone!
I'm new to this forum and I have a question.
Up until today, Word worked just peachy, but for some reason it has
taken to having a temper tantrum and giving me this message when I try
to print.

Tracked Changes view switching from Final w/Markup to Final
A fellow employee is tracking changes in her document, which actually is
a form, with the view mode set to Final Showing Markup. When she sends
it to co-workers for review, it changes the view to Final, regardless
of what the recipient's default view setting is. This is preventing
her recipients from automatically seeing the tracked changes likes she
wants.
I had her send it to me as a test, knowing that my default view is
Final showing Markup and, sure enough, when I opened the form, it
changed to Final and I cannot see the changes unless I go in an
manually change the view. What is causing it to default to Final and
how can this be turned off or changed?

I want to know what is the difference between MS WORD and
MICROSOFT OFFICE WORD 2003. Why does turnitin.com not

pictures and clipart not visible
Office 2000. MS Word.
If I insert a image file or clipart into Word, I see the "bounding box" but
no image. In bygone days...when the image and the resize handles were
visible, I could grab a handle and resize...or grab the whole image and
move - now neither of these function. If I right click and choose Edit
Picture, the image becomes visible in the Picture Editor.
This used to work fine, for me...but not now. I ran a "repair office" but

Word 2000 and 2003 fonts
I currently have a document file on a CD saved in Word
2000 format and all the text is in the Monotype Corsiva
font - fancy for a wedding invitation. I got a new
computer with Office 2003 and when I open the file the
font and size are completely different. How do I open a
file of an older version in 2003 and not loose my font

Controling pages
How do I eliminate or delete the last page(s) of a
document that do(es) not have any content. I can do in in
the print command window, but would like to take care of

Character Styles
We are using Word 2002 SP-2 and are trying to create a character style which
would shade text, but would not change any other of the text's properties.
(We want to duplicate the font property "Redline" that our users are
accustomed to using in WordPerfect.)
I have tried setting the "Style Based On" to "(underlying properties)" and
to "default paragraph font", but when I apply the newly created style, it
always changes the font back to what I had in place when I created the
style. When I modify the style, I do not see any font designated.
Is there a way to create a character style so that it only changes one
attribute and does not change any other property of the text?
Also, what is the difference between underlying properties and default
paragraph font? I'm assuming that underlying properties allows for other
character attributes which may have been applied, in addition to the
paragraph font. Is that right?
