When typing a word document and i come to the end of a
line the word is not going down as a word. eg if there are
3 characters left to end of line and i have a 6 letter
word then instead of moving the whole word down to the
next line it just spilts up the word

i bet it's the nasty automatic hyphenation beast!

tools / language / hyphenation
untick automatically hyphenate document

This can happen in two cases:

1. Where the font is erroneously coded as "decorative," i.e., a symbol font
(such as Symbol or Wingdings) that Word thinks can be broken anywhere. If
the font is defective or damaged, there's not much recourse except to use a
different font or try to find an undamaged copy.

2. When the document itself is damaged; see
