I backed up my entire hard drive prior to upgrading to Vista Business OS. I
backed up all files and documents on a external hard drive using Windows
backup program. I have now installed windows Vista Business and alos install
Microsoft Office 2007. I have MS Office Pro 2003. I have tried restoring my
documents and have been unable to do so. Can anyone help me, there are some
very important docs there that I need.

This is a group for help with Word and related user files. Consider
posting the question to the Vista or XP news groups.

That aside, Have a look at this article as a place to start.

What happens when you try to open one of the documents?

I cannot open any dowcument using office 2003 because keep getting a error
message stating the "this action is only valid with products that are
installed." 2003 was install ed on xp and was backed up on the HD. When I
try to open the documents using MS 2007 the docs do not show up in the
available list.

Do the documents show up on the "Computer" list of the appropriate drive
and directory?

I confess there is something I really don't understand about your
description of how you changed your computer from XP to Vista. Did you
install Vista as an upgrade over XP or was it a fresh install?

Presumably you mean the Backup program that comes with Windows XP
(NTBackup)?

Do I take it that Vista either doesn't have a backup function, or if it
does, that it is NOT backward compatible YET AGAIN?

If that is the case, then it's just another manifestation of Microsoft's
"couldn't give a monkeys toss" about users data. just like XP backup
couldn't read 98 backup files and nobody knew about it until they tried to
restore the backup after installing XP.

I'm afraid that if you DID use the integral XP backup function, you will
have to find a machine with XP on it to restore the documents you need, and
transfer them to your Vista machine some other way...

Gordon

You've got the wrong end of the stick. Word 2007 will open documents from
previous versions of Word. This is a completely different problem in that
the user cannot see the old documents. Probably because they have been
restored to the incorrect location.

Terry,

Quote from the OP's post:

"I have tried restoring my documents and have been unable to do so."

That to me, implies that the OP hasn't, for some reason, even been able to
get them onto the new computer.
Until we know PRECISELY what that phrase means, we can't begin to offer a
solution.

And following your quote it goes on to say "When I
try to open the documents using MS 2007 the docs do not show up in the
available list."

That implies to me that they are not in the default File Location set in
Word or possibly the wrong file type has been selected in the File, Open
dialog.

I think we need to know exactly what the OP did... :-)
