    - Linking WORD Files Hi: Environment: WORD2000, XP platform. I have the following scenario: Document 1 text lines 1 ----------- LINK -----> document 2 text lines 2 I used the INSERT|FILE|INSERT AS LINK to link to the text in Document 2. I was under the impression that if I used links to files I could change the text in Document 2 and have that change reflected in Document 1 when I re-opened Document 1. However, this does not occur and I have to delete and re-enter the link. The questions are: Am I using the wrong WORD function to accomplish this? If the wrong function, what do I use?     - File Information Summary garbled, retaining bad info, how to clear info? Using WIN 2000 Pro; NTFS, with Office 2000 (updates up to date on both). = =20 I have found that the system is somehow retaining obsolete summary = information about obsolete (and indeed long deleted and vanished) files = that had Summary pages. For instance, I have a document called = ''d:\documents\home\Sophia\dog at large.doc''. In the ''Title'' = Section, under Properties>Summary (tab)>Advanced (button), I find that = the title shows as ''Springfield/Greene County dog catcher''. However, = I also notice there are two other listings to choose from. Both are = from long dead and gone files. Taking the first one as an example, it = is ''Small Shell'' (an old desktop shortcut to a 16 bit, DOS 5.0 = application, long deleted). Now, the ''Springfield/Greene County'' = entry should have been under the ''subject'' field instead of the title, = so I decided to delete it from there and put it where it ought to be. = However, I find I can add stuff to the list of choices here, but I = CANNOT delete stuff. I cannot for instance, make that ''Small Shell'' = entry go away. Furthermore, anything I add shows up under the = Properties of ALL subsequent documents that I check on. For an example. I decided to download, fresh from Microsoft, a document = from the knowledge base called ''msgina.doc'' (just picked it at = random). Then in the ''Subject'' line to the previously mentioned ''dog = at large.doc'' file I added ''whatever'' as the subject. Now, obviously, the data on the file information summaries is being kept = somewhere besides in the files themselves.     - Windows and styles I have been converting from word 97 to word 2002 for windows xp I have two problems that I'd like to fix if possible. First Is there any way that I can get word to open multiple document windows in the same parent window instead of two completely separate instances? I often have two documents side by side in word. I "alt-tab" to another program. When I want to "alt-tab" back to word, I have to do it twice. I know that I can just click on the icons on the task bar, but I find the keyboard much faster. Second I use paragraph styles. In word 97, I could change paragraph styles by pressing 'alt-o-s', the first letter of the style that I want (say N for normal) and enter. When I do this in word 2002, a style window opens up and stays open after I select the style that I want. I then must close that window. I can see that this would be handy if I wanted to browse the document and change styles at will. But to change one paragraph, its a drag.     - Shortcut Keys I previously posted a question re: shortcut keys in Word 2002. I stated that the combination of Ctrl+Home should take me to the "Start of Document". However, this combination instead calls up the "Find and Replace" box. I have checked in "Customize Keyboard"..Categories" .. All Commands" ..Commands, "Startofdocument" ... and verified that the combination of Ctrl+Home is assigned, as it should be, to "Start of Document", yet the program doesn't work that way. Since the proper combination of keys is assigned as indicated, what else could be causing me to get the "Find and Replace" box? I can't reassign the keys, as suggested in one reply, as they are already correctly assigned.     - Links I want to link two parts of the same business letter so that what I type into the one part appears in the other. If possible I'd like to make a template that will create a document with this property. For example, in the following message, I only want to type "ABC Company" once (in the opening address). In the template, I've tried selecting the text "ABC Company" and bookmarking it, then using "Paste Special" to put a link somewhere else in the text. But when I create a document from that template, the links get all mixed up and don't work. It keeps asking me if I want to save the changes I made to the template.     - Dyamic Text Based On Section Titles Hi Everyone, This is a little hard for me to explain, but I'll give it a go. I'm trying to create a document that at the top (in the header) you have a bunch of information: ex. Name of Company {Section Title} ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------ Contents Prev. { PAGE} Next Where {Section Title} is, I would like text to be inserted there based on what section the person is in. The document I'm editing is very long (about 400 pages), and this will eventually be converted into PDF. So I don't want to have to write out the section titles for a large amount of sections. Is there a way of doing this? If so how? I've tried my hand at using Fields and thier codes, but nothing works. Eventually, when creating the PDF, I would like all the links and such to be created from the Word file so I don't hve to edit the PDF to do all these links.     - Mail Merge? I need to print 170,000 small labels, quite simply numbered 000001 to 170,000. I suspect Mail Merge might be the answer if I can get the numbers to increment by 1 for each label.     - Re: Code to return exactly the same file size as Properties dialog Is it possible that my macro is more accurate than the Properties dialog and Explorer? In every instance I've tested, the Propertes dialog in rounding off the size of the file in MBs to the form #.## MB doesn't properly round the number but simply leaves the hundredths column as it is, regardless of the value in the thousandths column. So for example a raw MB size of 1.228027 is correctly resolved by my macro as 1.23MB, while the Properties dialog shows it as 1.22 Yet a raw MB of 1.49414 MB is shown correctly as 1.49, both by my macro and the Properties dialog. Of course, it's possible that my raw MB number, derived by dividing the bytes by 1048576, is incorrect, and that Windows is using a different raw MB number.     - derive kilobytes from bytes Is there a formula to convert bytes to kilobytes, which would work with any number of bytes? I want this for a macro in which I save a backup copy of a template, and at the end of the macro I display a msgbox with some information including the size of the newly saved template. I want this to be in the same format that you see in the File Properties dialog, with both the bytes and the kilobytes. The problem is that this involves more than simply dividing the number of bytes by 1.024 to get the number of kilobytes. That computation works with smaller files, but not with larger files.     - After updating OEM Word 2002 to Retail Office XP Serial Numbers did not change. Hi, I recently upgraded my office products. I had MS Office 2000 Pro installed on my computer. I also had Word 2002 installed as it came with the computer and is an OEM version. I recently upgraded to MS Office XP Pro Developers edition. When opening MS Word 2002 the opening screen shows the OEM serial number. When the program opens and I go to the Help Menu and display About Microsoft Word it shows the correct serial number for the retail version. Is there a way that I can fix this?     - Moving data from Word document to Works database I am trying to move some of my wife's recipes from an old PS1 to a Works database. (They are in an application program and not accessible electronically) I have printed the recipes and have scanned them in. When I OCR them into Word and try to cut and paste them into the database, they appear in the database as a picture not text. Is there a way to cut and paste items from Word as text?     - Styles Hello! I don't know if you will be able to help me or not but thought that it was worth a crack. I am working for a health and safety company and have been charged with the mammoth task of tidying up all of the templates that they use, and making them into generic formats. I am not very computer oreintated and am finding this really hard. Wonder if you could awnser some questions for me?!?! When there is a table in a template and you are using the bullet points and numbers, how do I get the letters to not have a full stop after them? e.g a b c not a. b. c.?? When I started a new template this morning I suddenly found that I cannot access any of the styles that I have been using, I am clicking on the style button on the top of my toolbar but it only produces old ones that are not relevant and I haven't used.     - Excel and Word disagreement I have a pastoral care and contacts database set up in Excel, and in one column each contact has a hyperlink to a Word doc file containing that individual's pastoral record. I can sort and filter the Excel data to my heart's content. When I click on a hyperlink the relevant file opens quickly in Word, and I can add to it, edit, and so on. The problem comes when I go to save it. Word closes instantly when I click on save, or save as, and the changes to the file are lost. The next time I start Word it actually offers to recover the document it had open when it shut down. I have no idea why this should be happening, and the setup is completely useless for my puposes like this. The programs are part of Office 2002. I would deeply appreciate any thoughts on this.     - Endnotes/100's of pages added/footnotes not showing In my friend's dissertation file that she has been saving as an RTF using both Word 97 and Word 2000, she had endnotes, and using the endnotes suddenly added like 1000 pages to her file. So, she converted the endnotes to footnotes hoping that would cure the problem. It made the hundreds of pages go away, but: 1) after footnote #5, the footnotes no longer show up no the page (but you can see them if you do Show Footnote); and 2) Footnote #6 is very large and isn't seeming to automatically feed over to the next page, so it's causing a break so that there is only 1 sentence on page 13. For the heck of it I tried deleting about 2/3 of footnote #6 and it did then remove the weird break on that page. So it may have something to do with how large that footnote is and how it's not continuing on to the next page. Has anyone experienced either problem and been able to rectify it?     - Changing existing style I am using WORD 2002 I am also a very rare user of WORD I have a document prepared in a previous version of WORD that now has a style described as "Normal + 12pt" which was not the style of the original. Now I need to edit the style so that all the paragaphs with that style change and the technique seems to be different from my previous version and I cannot see how to change the style.     - Word 2000 / Equation 3.0 "cramped" text I have one machine (98SE) running Word 2000, and when I try to enter a math equation using Equation 3.0, the characters are all cramped together, practically on top of each other. This is the only machine on which this happens. I've tried reinstalling Windows as well as Office. Same result. Doesn't matter which font is used (Times New Roman, generally). I've checked the spacing, and it is using the default settings, the same as the other machines which display things just fine. Has anyone heard of this situation, who might be able to shed some light on what I might be able to try to resolve it? Any suggestions are very greatly appreciated.     - In Tracked Changes: Seeing date of change when rollover mouse I am using Word 2002 on XP Pro. I have tracked changes settings set to show insertions and deletions within the body of the text (the old way), not with balloons in the margins (the new way). In older versions of Word, when I moused over the added or deleted text, I would see who made the change and the date. I had that function for a while with Word 02 but that function seems to have gone away in all my tracked changes documents.     - How to Layout Newsletter in Word I am trying to help out a non-profit organization by setting up the layout of their newsletter in MSWord. I am encountering a number of problems which suggest that either I am misusing the product, or else MSWord is not a suitable product for laying out a newsletter. Prior to this I have always used MSWord for documents which essentially consisted of a single sequential stream of text, broken up into sections and possibly using features such as columns. However in a newsletter there are multiple independent streams of text, each of the articles in the newsletter, which must be positioned on specific pages and in specific locations within those pages. At first glance that seems to be the purpose of text boxes. However text boxes do not permit using any advanced features. In particular I have already found out that I cannot use columns, nor can I use drop capitals on paragraphs. I am certain that as I proceed I will find many other features that I cannot use. Certainly that is suggested by the help topic describing the difference between text boxes and frames. I need the ability to define a set of rectangular spaces within the document, through which an article will flow. According to the help that suggests that I must use a text box, since a frame merely provides the ability to position objects. However all of the restrictions on a text box suggests that I cannot use a text box. Must I therefore abandon MSWord for this project? If so what product should I use to create this newsletter? and autocorrect entries, but I'm stuck with regard to moving my spelling
