Since installing Office 2007, when opening an 2003 or 2007 document the mouse
pointer does not work. To select anything on the document you must use the
keyboard arrow key and then hold shift to select any thing on the document.

How do we fix this?

This is usually the symptom of a corrupt registry. From Start, Run
(Winkey+R) type in

regedit

and press enter. Navigate tot he Word DataKey and press delete. Word will
automatically create new DataKey when it is next started.

Word DataKey

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\version number\Word\Data

I did this and it added a pointer line, but the mouse does not work. I can't
select anything on the document to highlight, delete or format.

What happens in Safe Mode: from Start, Run (Winkey+R), type in

winword /a

and press enter. Can you edit fully now?

Safe Mode starts Word in its default install mode bypassing all
customisations, macros, templates and third party add-ins. So it suggests
that you have installed a utility which has placed an add-in in Word and it
is incompatible. You need to find it and then either get a compatible update
or remove it.
