Works was a combination application that included scaled down versions of
Word, Excel and Access(like).

Works word processing did not include 100% of the features available in Word
... same for the Spreadsheet (Excel) and the Database(Access).

Works was frequently installed on machines prior to purchase -- but I don't
think you see it much any more.

Depending on how you intend to use your computer -- the types of documents
you will be creating -- you may be just fine with Works applications -- or
you may be frustrated and need to "bump up" to the full scale Microsoft
applications.
