Is it possible to return to table of contents by using
bookmarks in table of contents field and not lose
bookmarks when updating table of contents field when
adding, deleting, etc., headings and subheadings in the
document. If not, how can you set up function to jump to
and from table of contents and specified locations in the
document? (i.e., I'd like to be able to "return to" just
as easily as "going to".

Instead of trying to use bookmarks (which will be overwritten every time the
TOC is updated), go to Tools | Customize and find the GoToTableofContents
command (in the All Commands category). Drag the button to your toolbar and
use that instead.
