    - Help! I "saved over" my original document I needed to write a follow-up letter to a company, so I opened th original letter I had written them (MS Word document) and made th necessary changes. Then, without thinking, I clicked the "Save" icon. A split second later I realized I had screwed up by not saving th follow-up letter as a new document. I did not have the backup document box clicked, nor was I trackin changes, and I have since exited out of Word. Is there any possible way for me to get back to my original letter before I accidentally "saved over the top of it?" I really need t print a copy of the original for my records.     - Accessing to Show Desktop During installation of software, the installation screen occupies the whole desktop. There is no way to click "Show Desktop".     - Unwanted changes in font and size When I copy/paste or cut/paste a block of text from one place in a document to another, the copied text is in a new font and a new size. Sometimes the unmoved text just above the moved text changes in font and size. Then I have to edit to return all text to the original font and size.     - show text found before replacing I'm replacing text using wildcards in Word 2002(win98se). I don't want = to use "Replace All". The problem is, when I select "Find Next" Word = finds the text(around 5-6 lines long) but I can't see the entire text I = can see only the last line of the selection(at the top of the document = window). I have to then use the scrollbar to see what's been found which = is a real trouble for large files which I'm working with.     - Vertical writing While editing my text, suddenly some 100-150 lines (from the middle of my text) went to vertical, like: m y c o m p u t e r so that some 70 new pages were created (each of them with 1 vertical line only).     - Problem with viewing A4 Print Layout Hi, I just got a copy of Microsoft Word 2003. The problem I am having i that when I start a new document the page layout on screen look strange. I have selected A4 size and print layout view but can't see to solve the problem. You will see what I mean if you click on th screenshot below: 'Screenshot' (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/element110/Image1.jpg) As you can see the page layout looks out of proportion. When I compil a document and print it there are no problems it's just the look of i puts me off. When I open older documents, they display as they should, in A format.     - Word acting strange My Word program has become very slow to open, and when it opens, if I click on "file", it shifts to a total white screen for a few seconds, before finally opening and presenting the file menu. If no one knows what this is, it would help to learn how to reinstall on XP. I have the Ofice CD--I tried to "X" word and then reinstall, but it didn't change anything despite appearing to uninstall/install. Is there a way to uninstall JUST Word, and then reinstall?     - Word 2003 "Getting Started" Pane is Pain I know I'm going to feel like an idot when someone points-out the obvious, but... After (hapilly, for the most part) using Office 2003 for several weeks, I've turned-off the "getting started" task pane in the applications. By unchecking "Startup task pane" from Tools|Options|View in Excel, for example, it no longer appears when I start the program. But it doesn't work in Word 2003!?!? Thise documents open fine on all other computers without lines apearing on the screen. Must be a local computer setting. Not tables on any of the documents.     - Pushing new styles to our users We are using Word 2002 SP2 on Windows 2000 SP4 PC's. We are migrating from WordPerfect 9 and are doing fairly well so far. We have created an add-in, library.dot on a network drive, which we copy down to users' PC's upon login in order to give them access to macros which should work across templates. That way, we can make changes to the network copy which gets pushed to the users at their next login. I now want to give them access to new styles we've created which need to work across templates, but I read in the newsgroups, that although toolbars and macros work from add-ins, styles don't. How can I push the new styles to our users that they can use across different template types? Just in case there is a better way to do it, the styles are for the purpose of double-indenting a block quote. Although, Word has a block quote style, we need ones with varying amounts of indention, so I created new styles with the correct indention. I've come across some paper stock that consists of basically 3 IBM "punch cards" mounted via perforations on an 8.5"W x 10.5"L carrier. I would like to define this physical form to Word 2002 so that I can "call it up" when necessary. The 3 punch cards are each 7.3"W x 3.25"H. (In other words, they're in what I guess would be landscape mode). The first of the 3 punch cards begins at the top of the 8.5 x 10.5 carrier. At the bottom of this card, after the perforations that allow it to be separated from the carrier, there is a strip of .25"carrier before the perforations that designate the top of the 2nd card. This repeats after the 2nd card leading to the 3rd; there there's another .25" strip before the end of the physical carrier. I hope that the description above makes sense; I'm sure my terminology isn't the most accurate in terms of Word. The question(s) is(are) 1) What's the proper terminology ... form / template / paper / ??? 2) How do I define this "thing" to Word? Ideally, I would like for Word to recognize that at the end of the "logical" page (IOW, the 1st, or 2nd, or 3rd card), the next logical page begins on the next punch card on either the same, or next "carrier".     - Trying to use forms in word 2000 I am trying to create a form for our INTRANET page. I am using Word 2000 to do this. I believe I have the form created correctly. The problem is when I submit the form the data does NOT go into the .txt file that I want it to. The best that I can tell it does not go anywhere.     - 22k file expands to 515k by printer I have a one-page doc with a simple 25 row x 4 column table. Only half of the cells have two words in each (Arial 9 pt font), and the other cells are blank. There is nothing else on the page. The file size reads 22kb, but when the HP 6mp printer begins to print it reads it as a 515kb file. Does anyone know why, and is this normal? Thank you.     - Indentation and tab markers on horizontal ruler don't snap I am using MS Word 2000 on a computer with Windows XP Professional operating system. My preferred measurment unit for the horizontal rules is inches. In the past, whenever I openned a new word document, I was able to get the Indentation and tab markers on the horizontal rulers to snap to the 1/8" tick marks. On this computer though, whenever I open a new word document, these markers on the horizontal ruler don't snap to any of the tick marks. If I open a document sent to me by somebody else where the markers snap, then it will always snap, but I can't turn on the snapping feature on a new document.     - Word XP footnotes won't renumber I have Office Xp and I have created 30 foonotes in a document. I want to delete footnotes 7-14. Normally, when I want to delete a footnote from the body of the text and also delete it from the footnote area of the page I just go to the footnote in the body and delete it and it automatically deletes it from the footnote area as well. I deleted the footnotes this way and they were deleted from the body and the footnote area but for some strange reason (no virus found) the renumbering of the footnotes did not work. So what you see in the footnote area is footnote 6 and then it goes straight to footnote 15. Why is it not renumbering all of a sudden??? I tried to copy and paste the text into a new document with no luck. I also tried the document on a machine running MS Word 2000. What is even stranger in Word 2000 is that all of the footnotes 7-14 show up in the footnote area and all of the footnotes except for number 7 show up in the body of the file. Isn't that weird that the same file would have 2 sets of issues on 2 different versions of MS Word.     - select less than a paragraph One of my coworkers has some feature enabled in Word 2000 that causes entire paragraphs to be selected any time a paragraph boundary is crossed in selection. (FWIW, the selection gets extended on mouse-up, not while he's dragging.) Does anyone know how to turn this off? It's driving him nuts.     - standard toolbar messed up Dear all, The standard toolbar on my pc has disappeared, even when the toolbar is ticked under View-toolbars it is not there.     - Tables -- one row to a page I have a customer for whom I do a report that contains a large table--three columns, but sometimes 5 rows, sometimes 100. And the third column has to be totaled. No problem there. But sometimes she requires that each row of the table be on its own page. This came up for the first time since I've been using Word, and I accomplished it by putting my cursor in each row and hitting Control-Shift to insert a hard page break. But my formula result at the bottom right cell of the table turned into an error message: "Table Index Cannot Be Zero." I entered the formula and tried again, with the same results. I also notice that there is some sort of spacer at the top of each page before the table row. So obviously the way I chose to put one row on each page doesn't work very well, and Word is treating each page as its own table. Can you tell me the best way to put each row on a page of its own?     - Cannot read text with .wps extension Created some text documents in a PC running Windows XP Home. It has Microsoft Works 6.0 installed. All the text documents created in this PC have a .wps extension. Trying to copy info (using a floppy disk) to another PC running Windows 95C.     - Word won't open! Would appreciate if anyone can advise me: I am using a winXP machine with Office2000 installed. One day, every time I opened Word a 'This program has to close...' window came up and Word would shut down. Having researched the problem on the web I am aware of the 'renaming normal.dot' tactic, but running a search does not find any instances of normal.dot. I then tried running the command 'winword /a' which successfully opened Word, but as soon as I try to access any of the menus I get the same problem. I have deleted the 'data' key from the registry that is advised on some sites but no improvement. If I try to repair Word the machine tries to open windows installer but then fails. I have also uninstalled and reinstalled Office, but still no good. Does anyone know what I can do to fix the problem without resorting to formatting the drive and starting again.     - Word Index to PDF Hello, I'm using Word 2000, Windows 2000 Pro, and Acrobat 5.0. I'm converting a 300+ page Word .doc (2058 kb) to PDF using the "Acrobat|Convert to Adobe PDF" menu selection. Question 1: What is the direct way to create a PDF with linked index entries form a Word .doc? Question 2: In case the answer to question 1 is "No way exists, as everybody knows," then I ask, is it not remarkable that Word index entries are not automatically linked?! Question 3: Can I at least streamline the conversion process so the Word index tags don't fill the PDF with empty calories? (Elaboration follows.) When converting a Word .doc full of index tags to PDF, how do I streamline the process to minimize the PDF filesize? It seems to me that the Word index tags are hard for Acrobat to digest. After I add the index tags, the conversion takes much longer and produces a much bigger file. Currently, I've indexed about 1/4th of the .doc and the PDF is 5101 kb. So the Word .doc with index tags results in a PDF twice the size of one without index tags, yet the fatter PDF doesn't offer anything more except a few-page index...correct? I also converted the doc via printing to the acrobat printer driver and the distiller. These methods produce a PDF of about 1500 kb, almost instantly, and have everything (I think) the 5101 kb PDF has except TOC links. Correct?     - Task Pane remain open pls I wish for the Task Pane to remain open at all times after each document is loaded or until i choose to close it within a document (not all documents). It isn't easy. You have to drill down several levels at HP Support to get a
nav bar that shows the forums. Start at
http://welcome.hp.com/country/us/en/support.html and drill down to your
product; at some point you may see a link to "Discussion groups" or the like
on the left side. Or try
http://www.software.hp.com/non-production/ITRCWEB/en/itrc_forum.html and use
the "Visit the forum" link at the bottom. Here you can select the
appropriate type of product under "Printers."
