Have recently installed MS Office and need to convert all my old files and

Word to pdf conversion problem
I'm using MS-Word 97 and Adobe 5.0, trying to convert a file to pdf format.
Halfway through the conversion, the status bar stops. Only way to exit is to
shut computer down and reboot. OS is WinXP-SP2. Any suggestions?

How to disable automatic spaces
Hello,
I've got a problem with Word XP as it is placing and removing
spaces without asking.
I've got 2 samples to illustrate my problem.
Sample 1 (Copy & Paste):
I've copied the text 'test' to the clipboard.
When I paste the text into the sentence 'This is a sentence'
between 'a' and 'sentence' I get 'This is a test sentence'.
Notice the space after the word 'test'. This is added by
Word without asking me. As I copy and paste a lot of stuff
where it's meant to become one word this is very annoying.
Sample 2 (Delete):
I've got a text like 'Test ' followed by a paragraph ending.
When I select 'Test' (and not the space behind it) and press
'Delete' then Word deletes the space as well. This is also
very annoying.
Can anyone tell me how to disable this 'intelligent'-behaviour?

I am trying to create a new ms words document with hard-coded text from an
existing ms excel spreadsheet containing data. I have an existing excel
spreadsheet say "data.xls" with 6 fields containing some records.

En-dash and Em-dash without numeric keypad?
On my desktop, which has a full keyboard, I can get an en-dash or
em-dash using the keyboard shortcuts Ctrl+Num- and Alt+Ctrl+Num-.
The keyboard on my laptop does not have a numeric keypad. Is there a
keyboard shortcut I can use to get these characters? I tried NumLock
without success.
I would prefer not to define a new shortcut. I guess I am really
asking if there is a way to simulate the minus sign on the numeric
keypad without a numeric keypad.

Unable to Open MS Word 2000 SR
Recently my MS Word 2000 has developed the following
glitch.
When I open the program instead of a blank page there
appears the opening page of a file which I had created
some time before but had deleted. When I click the 'open
new page' icon, the same thing happens. And so on for any
further effort to secure a blank page. In all cases the
old file with its appears on my screen. I have
uninstalled and reinstalled the MS Word Program, but the
problem remains. I cannot locate the rogue file on my
computer. Nor can I locate the Normal.Dot file. Could
this be a fault with my Operating System, Windows XP Home

Word 2003 Print Layout Problem
Somehow I lost the regular Print Layour view. I have
black lines between pages instead of grey separated
desktop area. No matter which view I switch to and back
from, even rebooting and starting a new document, I
cannot see my header and footer areas.

Run application using Word 2002 toolbar button
Although using Word 2002, I still have the clipart gallery from Office 2000,
and would like to access it by using a toolbar button. Problem is I am
having trouble creating a macro to run any outside application, let alone
the clip gallery (which I can only access from a shortcut on the Windows XP
main program menu. (Can't find or properly name the actual clip executable.

Word XP Unit of Measurement Won't Change
Hello,
I have a problem and am urgently looking for a solution. I installed Word
XP, and the ruler showed measurements in millimeters rather than inches. I
tried repeatedly to go to Tools, Options, General to set the default to
inches. That should have been simple enough. "Inches" appeared as the
default setting, but the ruler did not change to reflect the change. It
still appeared in millimeters. I tried uninstalling and then reinstalling,
with the same result. I also tried running Install and specifying Repair,
and the only change was that the ruler's unit of measurement changed to
"character."
Also, when going to Format, Paragraph to adjust spacing before or after
paragraphs and/or to set indents via this dialog box, the measurement that
shows is "ch" (character). Typing in measurements here in inches and
specifying inches as the desired unit of measurement doesn't work.
FWIW, in trying to troubleshoot the problem, the same CD that was used in
the installation was also used to install XP on another machine. It
installed properly. The other machine had identical specs to the "problem"
machine.
Does anyone have any ideas, suggestions, solutions as to what I can try to
set things right? Help!

Normal File already exists?
Hi there,
Every time I close Word 2003, I got this message: "The file Normal already
exists. Do you want to replace the existing file?" There are 3 buttons:
Save, No and Cancel. If I click Save, Word will save and exit. If I click
NO, Word will ask me enter a file to save. Anyone knows how to fix this
problem? It's annoying that you have to click SAVE every time exit Word.

Problem formatting Wordpad (and often Word)
I'm having a terrible repeat problem with Wordpad I use sometimes for its
simplicity and Word in getting the margins correct. I'm using MOS 2003 and
WinXPSP2. I have had the problem with Word before, but not Wordpad. I have
tried to use Format>Tabs and Format>Paragraph to correct this and the Help
but gotten nowhere. Obviously need to read up on margins in Word and will
but need to get help now with this.
I can't make sense of the margin settings on the *horizontal ruler* and am
not sure whether to use it manually or the Format capability on the toolbar.
What I'm getting no matter how I change or set the *tab stop position* at
Format>Tabs (obviously I don't know how) is something that looks like this:

Annoying Toolbar
I'm posting this to both the Word and the WinXP newsgroups, as i don't know
which is causing the problem.
A few days ago, I installed the WinXP Service Pack 2, and also updated my
Word with a newer version (2002?). Now an annoying toolbar appears on the
right side of my desktop, disappearing in and out of the desktop when my
curser gets near the right side. It's annoying because (1) I don't want or
need it; and (2) it gets in the way when I'm trying to close a window by
using the x in the top right corner.
I also updated my mother's computer with WinXP SP2 and the Word update on
that same day. Her annoying bar, which has a different appearance from
mine, has appeared on the left hand side.
I know I can move it from the right, but I don't want it at all. Can
someone kindly tell me how to get rid of it?

Turn Off Closing Effect
Hi. When I close Word 2003 and click save to save the changes to
the current document I see what I believe is animation showing the
outline of a box decreasing in size. This, of course happens fast and
if I'm not looking at my monitor I'll probably miss it. Wondering what
this was and can I turn it off.

Command line switches
I want word to default to a certain template when I run from the desktop. (I
don't want to replace normal.dot.) The Word helpfile (after a lot of
searching) says you can use a /t switch from the command line (the Run
command from the Start menu) to specify a template name. However, the Run
command doesn't seem to recognise anything with a "/" symbol after the
filename. Is there a compatibility problem here? How can I achieve this? Can

Help with Org Chart
User has an org chart created in Word 2000. Now she has XP and when you
open the chart, the horizontal lines under the basically "centered" 3rd
level manager have been extended. It appears as though the data is being
stretched to fit the margins somehow.
Where the center manager employees should be listed as two vertical columns
of names, those names have been moved to the left and right as far as can be
moved. It all looks very wierd.

I have a block text of addresses that all end with a semi-
colon. I'd like to separate each address into one line.=20
I searched for ; to replace it with ;=B6 but all I got was=20
exactly that, a semi-colon with a paragraph sign behind=20
it. Does anyone know if in Word, I can actually search=20
and replace with a "hard" paragraph break to break up this=20
huge block of text?

AutoCorrect in tracking mode comments
I used to be able to use AutoCorrect as a shortcut way of making comments in the tracking mode but in Word 2002 I can only do this when the doc is viewed in Print Layout. However, switching from Normal to Print Layout, defeats the purpose of the shortcuts. Is there any way to use the AutoCorrect function when making comments in Normal view?

Contrasting colors for insertions and deletions in tracking
In earlier versions, I could select contrasting colors for insertions and deletions when using the tracking function. However, in Word 2002, I can select colors only for the insertions. As a result, the insertions and deletions always appear in the same color, making them hard to distinguish. Is there any way I can get the insertions and deletions to appear in different colors?

Font convrter
A funny thing happened... I merged two documents written in Cyrillic in one
Word 2000 document. Now I have part of this document written in Cyrillic,
and part in Greek or whatever. How can I convert <unreadable> text back into
Cyrillic? Setting and re-setting languages does not help.
