    - how can I setup a password to access a document? I am using MS full version office XP that has 3 different users who create multiple documents in MS Word. I want to make sure that each user can protect their individual documents be creating a security password for each sensitive document. I have tried (with the document on screen) going to TOOLS-OPTIONS-SECURITY and then creating password-OK verifying password-OK and then closing the document.     - How do I edit drop-down menus? In Word 2003, there are certain default features in the drop-down menu (right-click on mouse) in the body of a document (i.e. heading 1, heading 2, heading 3, etc). I have no use for these & would like to put some useful features instead (i.e. font, print page). When I searched MS Office Assistance, the 'help' for Add, remove or change the order of tems in a drop-down list began with "1. Open the template that contains the form you want to change." Needless to say, this is not helpful for what I need so am unsure where to go from here.     - Outline list will not restart numbering I have a document that contains an outline list: 1. Top level a. Second level b. Another second level 2. Another top level a. etc... The document is a log that keeps track of "trials". After each trial, I make a copy of the current trial. One copy becomes part of the history and the other copy becomes new new current trial. When I copy the trial, I copy the outline list. The second copy continues the numbering from the first copy. Usually, I am able to select the first item of the second list and click on Format | Bullets and Numbering | Restart numbering to get it to start num,bering from 1. Once in awhile, this does not work. Can anyone explain what might be causing this problem?     - Default zoom Is there a way in Word 2003 to set the default zoom to 100% so that new blank documents will have that zoom on opening? Following the Word HELP, I tried to set View | Zoom | 100% while in NORMAL.DOT but that does not seem to work for some reason. I do no see any subjects here with the word "zoom" in the NG. I do have Adobe 7 loaded and I found reference to that possibly affecting NORMAL.DOT changes or prompts to save, or something (?)... but some other changes I made to Normal.dot did get changed.     - Can't copy/past to Word! I can't copy something, start up word, then paste it. I need to start word, THEN go back to what I wanted to copy, and then paste will work OK.     - Italics I wrote a 400-page document (a novel) using all direct formatting of text. So, in order to switch to Style formatting, I selected all and clicked Ctrl + Spacebar, then applied Styles. But now all my italics are gone! There were several hundred words here and there italicized for emphasis. Fortunately I have several backup copies of the original document, so I can do a search for "italics" and find all the instances in the original document. But how do I apply italics to the corresponding text in the newly Styled document? It will take hours and hours to do it word by individual word. I tried creating a macro that searches for italics in the orig. doc then copies the text to the clipboard, then searches for the corresponding text in the new doc, then applies italics to it. Then another click would repeat the process for the next instance of italics. I was planning on clicking the macro for each instance. Several hundred clicks would still be easier than all that searching manually. But when I paste the search string into the Find box, it gets "hardwired" into the macro code and I can never progress to the next instance because the search always looks for the text I pasted into the Find box the first time. Okay, so I don't suppose this makes much sense. But I promise you that if you make a copy of a document with italics in it, and then do a Ctrl + Spacebar on it and then try to re-italicize all the words from the original, you will see what I mean.     - Does the Pickup Format (eyedropper) command still exist? I can find the "Paste Format" command (eye dropper with up arrow) but not the corresponding copy or select eye dropper command.     - Viewing templates is EXTREMELY slow - HELP! We had all of our templates for our legal secretaries stored on their local machines. Then, for backup and security purposes we moved them all to our server (a Windows 2000 server.) When using File : New (from Template on my computer and navigating to the server share) was pretty fast (not AS fast but hardly noticeable.) The client workstations were running Windows 2000 Pro and Office 2000. We upgraded the workstations to Windows XP (sp2) and upgraded Office 2000 to Office 2003. Now when they try to do the same thing : FILE : NEW (from template on my computer and navigate to the same network share) it takes from 60 to 90 seconds JUST to get a list of all the templates. If they click on one of the tabs it takes another 15 seconds! This performance is HORRIBLE. If I copy all of the templates back to the local computer they are fast again but I've lost shared resources and I cannot back them up from the server side without writing scripts to copy all of the files back to the server (not a very good alternative.)     - Office Update SP2 The latest Office update (SP2) seems to have caused a lot of problems and queries - It was, seemingly, a repeat of SP2 issued very recently Some have been unable to download it (are they the lucky ones?)     - Cursor does not stay where it is in Word 2003 Hello, What I liked about Word 2002 and below was that even when you scroll using the scroll wheel on your mouse, the cursor stays where it is. Therefore, when you want to go back to the cursor, you can just press the right arrow or left arrow and Word will bring you back to where the cursor is. However, with Word 2003, I don't think this feature works anymore. Now, instead, the cursor moves to a somewhere on the current "screen". I find this more inconvenient.     - Aligning Text when doc. has existing images I have a document with images all along the left side of the document. To the right of each image is a brief description related to the image. Somebody else composed this document, but I've been assigned the task of cleaning up the appearance of the document. I want to keep the images at left, but want to alter the placement of the text passages. I'm trying to set all of the text descriptions with a common vertical alignment/margin. However, when I attempt to move lines of text (i.e. a number of spaces to the right which varies with each text passage), the alignment goes all screwy. If possible, I'd like to move entire passages via highlighting and adjusting margins, or some such approach.     - Printed doc unlike onscreen document I worked on a 47-page document (version 6) that had numbered headings 1 thru 4. Onscreen it looked just fine but when I printed it, Heading 1 on page 28 had receded into the previous paragraph with no heading number attached; then a couple of pages further down a Heading 2 had done the same thing. Again, onscreen everything looked fine, but the print job didn't (I tried two different printers). If time had allowed I would have created a new document, but it was a rush job; but having more faith in my typing skills than my troubleshooting ones, I retyped those two pages and sent the document on its way with a warning of its unstable condition.     - Footnotes in Word 2003 I was vexed by Word (seemingly on its own) starting to display an annoying option when I sought to insert a footnote. I got a template that was directed at helping me to format my footnotes according to various scholarly research standards when all I wanted to do was just get to the darn footnote entry area and enter my text without assistance. I found a way to disable this but it was messy and now I'm finding that even that kludgey "fix" isn't working. Now, no footnote at all. Has anyone dealt with this before? The poem needs to have line numbers, but I do NOT want the explanatory text and the title to be included in the line count. In Word, click on File->Open or press Ctrl+O to open the
document, click on File->Print or press Ctrl+P to print the
document, and click on File->Close or press Alt+F4 to close the
document.
