Hi,
I want to change the shortcut to Word 2000 Premium. Since it is blue,
like the Internet Explorer shortcut, when I go in my folders that have
both documents and web pages stored, I have a difficult time telling
them apart. My problem is that when I click "Properties" for the
shortcut to "Word 2000" the "Change Icon" is grayed. I did a repair but
it didn't fix it.
Any suggestions,
Angie
P.S. I am a newbie

You cannot change the default Word icon.

Hmmmm. You may not be able to change the Icon that Office install would
create for its shortcut, but there's nothing to stop you creating a new
shortcut pointing to winword.exe, for which you can have any Icon you wish.
As for the file display in Explorer, you can change this icon using tools >
folder options > file types > advanced and change the icon to anything you
like - eg there are loads of icons in the shell32.dll file in the
windows\system32 folder. This will hold until next time you repair Word or
re-register it.

I agree, but in this particular case we are talking about the icon displayed
in Windows Explorer Folders - or at least that is my understanding. The icon
is pulled from the associated exe file, so without some clever editing of
WinWord.exe, I don't see that this would be a simple task.

That's the one I thought it was too, and you are correct that the icon is
normally pulled from the exe file, but you can certainly change this for an
icon from another exe, and it will stick, (I am looking at Explorer now with
that icon changed for a '?' icon from shell32.dll) unless you repair or
reregister Word, in which case it will restore the original.

'Broke it'? :)
Windows allows for icons to be changed. That's hardly breaking it.
Office, does, however maintain a strong grip, so the 'break' may be more of
a 'bend'. :)
