I have a problem opening MS word using MS Office 2000.

My system(actually my wifes computer)

P2 with 198 MB of Ram, 4.0GB hard drive running Win 98 SE

MS Office 2000 has been on the system for a long time. Lately
she says she cannot get MS Word to open when she clicks on the MS Word
icon on the desktop.

I check it out and she's right. The small screen appears that says MS
Word 2000, Product licensed to ________, Product ID- - - - - - - -.
The small screen stays there and I can only get it to go away by doing
the CTRL, ALT, DEL routine and then clicking on "Winword", then "end
task.

I tried opening Word by going to Explorer>C:\>Program File>MS
Office>Word. The same thing happens as described above.

All other portions of MS Office (Excel, Front Page, Access, etc) open
as normal, either using the desktop icon or going thru Explorer.

I removed MSOffice 2000 and reinstalled. The same condition still
exists.

Any suggestions?????

TIA Loring H.

Hi, Loring

I would suggest you to try opening word by going onto Start>Run and type
winword /a
and if it opens fine then you can try renaming the Normal.dot try searching
for the Normal.dot if you cannot find that then type %appdata% in the run box
and then Open the Microsoft folder and then open the Templates folder you'll
find normal there and rename it to OLDNormal.dot and teh opening word again..

You can try ww.support.microsoft.com and look for KB259413....

I think there is much of the information there, try them and lemme know the
results.

Regards,

Saakar

Saakar

I opened word by typing winword /a in the run box. Word opened but I
could not call up any of the Word documents. When I tried that things
froze up, had to use ctrl, alt, del to close Word. I do not understand
yout comment about renaming Normal. What is "Normal"? When I search
for Normal. I get 7 "Normal" associated with Microsoft office
templates. Can you please elaborate a bit on what you want me to do?

TIA Loring H

Hi Loring,

Thanks for Updating me on this It seems that you have a Network or a Mapped
Drive attached to your computer when u open My Computer can you find anything
like a Mapped Drive or are you using any Removeable Storage devices on your
computer if yes then try to delete them just right click on the device and
click on Remove or Delete....

Do you have Antivirus on your computer Norton or McAfee if yes you can also
try to Disable them and then try to open word Documents

Best Luck

Saakar
