Can't Insert Text Box in Word 2002

I am running Word 2002 under Windows XP.

Yesterday, I discovered that I cannot insert a text box in a Word document.
Every time I try, I get an error message and Word goes into recovery mode.
I have had this version of Word for over a year and have inserted text boxes
many times with no problem.

Is it something I did or something I installed? I did install MSN 9 Dial Up
and Roxio Easy CD & DVD Creator 6 recently.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. TIA.

Two quick tests that might tell us where the problem lays:

1. Rename Normal.dot to NormalOLD.dot, start Word up, test.

2. Hold down Ctrl when starting Word ("Safe mode"). Test.
