If I load Word 2002 from Office XP onto my new desktop
(Sony Vaio loaded with Windows XP), will I have problems
opening and editing documents created in this format with
my laptop's (Windows 98)Office 2000 version of Microsoft
Word?

No.

BTW the Word version is what matters; the Windows version
rarely makes a difference.
