    - Problems opening Word 2000 Professional after downloading recommended files Operating system: Windows XP Home Pentium 4 Office 2000 Professional I have looked at some of the other Word startup error messages and responses but none seem to be like mine. The problems are: After downloading Microsoft's recommended updates about 2 weeks ago, I have the following problems when opening windows: 1. Message box with progress bar saying, 'Preparing to install Microsoft Office 2000SR-1 Professional, Insert disk. I close the dialog box at the 'x' (upper right hand corner). Then, 2. Message box saying Error 1706 No valid source.....etc. I close at the 'x'. 3. Word now opens to the usual view and I can use it normally. Upon closing Word with the 'x', I get the following messages: 1. This file is in use by another application or user C:\ Documents & Settings\....\Normal.dot. I close this and get: 2. Save box for templates asking me to name the file and save it. I close at the 'x', then: 3. Message box saying that 'Changes have been made to the Global template (Normal), Save? I say no and the program closes. NOTE: I've been getting this latter massage when I close Word ever since I got this computer with the XP (Home) operating system. Please help.     - Opening Any Documents Hi, When i try to open any documents with Word 2002, it says the file is not available. (ie. "The file Key Points is not available") It is not the document's error as i tried and suceeded in opening the document with another application. Also, when i try to close the application, a balloon pops up saying "The file Normal already exists. Do you want to replace the existing file?" and/or "Chages have been made that affect the global template, Normal. Do you wnat to save those changes?" I have scanned for viruses.     - "Installing Components?" Ever since I first installed Office XP on my computer, whenever I start Word or Excel I get the message "Wait while Word installs components." Up till now this has been a minor inconvenience, so I haven't tried to solve the problem. But now I'm trying to use Word as the default Word Processor with ACT 6.0. Whenever I try to open Word from within ACT I get a message that ACT cannot find Word and that the Word driver is missing. Excuse my bad memory, but I seem to remember that when I originally installed Office XP there was some feature that I chose that prevents Word from loading on startup. Is there a way to correct this so that ACT can find the driver? I've tried reinstalling Office XP, but that option doesn't come up and it doesn't solve the problem. Go to Start --> Run --> type in winword.exe /a (note: there is a space after exe) 3. Click OK 4. Word should open now 5. Go to file--> open and open any Word document6. If you were able to open Word and any word doc error free? If yes 6. Close out of Word and follow the next set of instructions. 1. Close all apps 2. Go to Start--> Search (find win98)--> type in normal.dot (make sure you are searching your local drive and you are searching in hidden files and folders, system files and subfolders) --> click search button (find now win 98) 3. You may have multiple search results. 4. For each file found, right click on the file, go to rename and rename it as normal.old, normal1.old and so on until you rename all the files. 5. Since it is blue, like the Internet Explorer shortcut, when I go in my folders that have both documents and web pages stored, I have a difficult time telling them apart.     - Word97 on XP -- Cannot save Normal.dot Hello, I installed Word97 onto my new XP (Professional Edition). I did it as Admin, and it works as Admin. Other users however get an error at exit: cannot save or create C:\PROGRAM FILES\...\OFFICE\NORMAL.DOT (I translate from Finnish, so not exactly this text). I tried for now to reprotect the Office directory, as Admin: in Properties: Office (note: again translated...), I uncheck the Read-only box, and save with OK (selecting either of the following popup choices: only this object, or down recursively to everything). Surprise: this won't work!? It fails silently, i.e. accept the choices, but as I come back, the read-only flag is still there! 1. Why is that, and how to change it to read-write? 2.     - Margins set outside printable area I recently upgraded to WinXP and when I try to print a custom size doc (5.5 x 8.5) I get the message: "The margins of section 1 are set outside the printable area of page. Continue Yes/No?" The margins are .5" on top and 1" all other sides, so should not be a problem. I can't figure out why I am having this problem. If I select "Yes" continue, text will print, but it prints so far right of paper that it is off the page. If I use 8.5" x 11" paper, same doc would print centered on that size paper.     - Word and wordpad closing error solved Just in case this helps anyone. Here's the problem I had: "A few seconds after I open word (MS Office 2000) or WordPad, I get an error message that says the application has caused an error and will be close and an error log is being created. This is on Windows 2000." I had 2 printers installed on my computer. One was not plugged in and the other connects to my kids' computer. So basically, one or both were supposed to be there, but weren't. This caused Word and WordPad to close a few seconds after I opened them. I uninstalled the printers and the programs work fine now.     - Outlook and Word's Single Envelope Feature Hi: I'm using Office XP in a Win 98 SE computer. When creating a single a single envelope in Word XP from my Outlook XP Contacts, the Company name does not automatically get entered. Is there any way to get the Company name in above the address automatically? My only work around is to highlight the desired name in the list and then click on the Properties Box. Then the Contact input screen opens and I would copy the Company name and close the contact. Then I would click OK on the Select Name screen and finally I would paste the Company Name into the Deliver address that appears. I bring it up with the web browser just fine but when I select FILE - EDIT IN MICROSOFT WORD - I get the following message "This browser is not running Scripts.     - Word Hangs I have installed Windows XP on all my systems here. I am starting to see a unique problem. Word would take an incredibly long time to load certain files from the network. I figured it had somthing to do with network traffic. Then files started to not open at all. The user would double click on it and word would hang forever. To make a long story short I have traced the probelm to files that are made from templates. Specifically templates that originated from servers that are no longer on the network. I have files that won't open becasue they are looking for a template that was on a server that has been removed from the network 7 years ago. A temporary work around is to move the file to a local machine, unplug the network cable, open the file (which opens imediately), go to the tools menu, click on templates and ad ins, and remove the reference to the template in the document template field. (I think it replaces the reference with normal.dot), and finally copy the file back to the server where it was found. This would be fine if the problem was with only a few files but I have tnds of thousands of files created that have references to old templates. Is this a bug? Is there a fix? Is that Word 200 BC or AD?

Just kidding of course. ;-) I suspect you mean Word 2000?
