word has insufficient memory

I opened a document originally created in Wordperfect and that I subsequently
saved as a Word document. The document is 36 pages and is only text - no
tables, graphs, pictures - only text. When I ty to delete the first section
break I get the message:

Word has insufficient memory. You will not be able to undo this action once
it is completed. Do you want to continue?

When I click "No" I get the message:

There are too many edits in the document. This operation will be incomplete.
Save your work.

In fact, there are no edits in the document, so I do not understand the
messages. Can someone offer some help?

I am having the same problem with getting the insufficient memory message,
but it is with a Word document that I am trying to do many "find and replace"
and deletions, after copying and pasting a large amount of information into
the document. I NEVER had this problem with Microsoft Word 2000. Would
SOMEONE please advise if this is a problem with Word 2003 and if it is, is
there some way to fix it! Deloresw

Try closing and reopening the document before trying your F&R. This will
clear the Undo stack.

Thanks, I will try that. I save the document very often. Also, tonight, I
have been closing and exiting quite frequently. So far tonight, I have not
gotten the message, but am not holding my breath! Deloresw

I don't know what to tell you other make sure you do not have a lot of other
programs open. Have you tried restarting your computer? I have found this
will clear up many problems. Also, you might try copying the text into a
"new" Word document, save often, and try closing and reopening once in awhile
like Suzanne suggested. I was working in Word with Media Player and Outlook
open. I exited both of them and now am back to having Media Player open and
so far have no problems. My document is over 100 pages and all text, but I
work with this type of document all the time. I always use Word to reformat
to reduce the size of a document. Like I said, I NEVER had the problem with
Word 2000.

Also check that there are not more than 1 GB of files in the same
directory with the document. This includes Word's old temp files also,
which are in the same directory and "hidden" (e.g. in open folder,
Tools, Folder Options, View, Show hidden files and folders, to see
them). For some reason Word 2000 thinks there's no more memory available
if that 1GB directory limit fills up - which happens quite fast if you
safe often and the document is large to start with. No bugfix available. :-(

It appears I have a work-around for my problem. I did select all in the
document and did a copy. I then opened a new blank document and did a paste.
I was then able to do all the section deletes in the document without getting
the memory message.

As I originally noted -this document was converted from WordPerfect. We did
install and try the Microsoft tool to Remove Hidden Data - but that did not
solve the problem - Nevertheless, I am convinced there is something that came
over from WordPerfect that caused the problem and the copy and paste work
around did the trick.
