Having unfortunately had to revert to Win2000 thanks to Dell taking
3-4 weeks to repair a computer, I've come up against the problem of it
opening each document in separate window, each with a set of toolbar.
Is there any way of getting round this to open in 1 window with 1 set
of toolbars?

The quick answer is that you cannot change the behavior in Word 2000,
but see http://word.mvps.org/faqs/customization/SDIMDI.htm.

Thanks, that's what I thought - what sort of cretin would come up with
this modification?!

I had tried the add-in but it removed both sets of toolbars

Hmm, I just tested the add-in and it didn't affect the display of
toolbars. I can't explain why it does for you. :-(

If the toolbar is placed in a global template (add-in) then the
toolbar should be visible in all document windows regardless of SDI or
MDI.

Did you check the toolbars list to see if the toolbar is listed?
