I am running windows vista ultimate on a 32bit platform, it was working fine
and all of a sudden it does not work.

i tried deleting the data key from the following location:

\\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Word\Data

and that didnt work either, same issue... can anyone please help.

my other office products such as onenote and excel work perfectly. This
happens weather i'm just opening word as an application or opening a actual
document.

Is it with just that one document or does it happen with any document at any
time?

This happens all the time, with any word document in format .doc or .docx

First it pops up with the Microsoft office word has stopped working, check
online for a solution and close the program or close the program option, both
options just close the document, when i click view problem details i get the
error i pasted before.

Then i choose to close the document, then i get another pop up that says
"windows cannot find 'c:\(Filename)'. Make sure you typed the name correctly
and then try again. i click ok to this and try to open the document again,
it tells me last time word failed to start to run in safe mode, when i say
yes to safe mode, it still crashs, if i say no to safe mode and boot regular
it also crashs, after the third time i try to open it or any other document
it says safe mode did not work prior please perform a repair, so i do that
and still no win. i've uninstalled, reinstalled, with or without service
pack, removed the registry key for office12, and nothing at all works, what
can i co?

From Start, Run, type in

winword /a

and press enter. Does Word start correctly to a blank document now?

If it starts now, see the following FAQ for help diagnosing the problem:

Terry,

i tried that also, sorry forgot to write that, it doesnt work, it follows
the same format of crashing and informing you the last time word tired to
start it failed and if you would like to start in safe mode. Anything else
you can think of? it's weird cause xcel and the rest of the programs start
properly, i was thinking about disabling some add-ins but i cant even get
into word to look into it's options and such, i also ran the office
diagnostics and it came up with nothing also and passed on every check :-(

thanks

Please clarify my understanding of what you are saying: when you start Word
in Safe Mode from Start, Run, you get an error message saying that the last
time you started Word it failed and would you like to start in Safe Mode?
That cannot be correct.

Are you sure that you are typing in EXACTLY what I wrote including the space
between 'winword' and the '/a'?

Have you got a locally installed compatible printer driver? Without a
compatible printer driver, Word won't start except in Safe Mode.

Have you tried renaming normal.dotm to normal.old?

Terry,

1. when i start word with any doc or docx or just word as an application it
crashs, then when i open it a second time it says last time word crashed
would you like to start in safe mode, then on the third try it asks me the
option to repair. then repeats this cycle

2. when i type winword /a it tells me word failed to launch last time you
ran it and running it in safe mode might help, i say yes and it crashs, then
i try winword /a again and it tells me word failed to start in safe mode, do
you want to start in detect and repair mode.

3. under printers i have adobe PDF, fax, microsoft xps document writer, dell
laster printer 5100cn pcl6, microsoft office document image writer, send to
onenote 2007

4. normal.dotm has been renamed, but i dont see a new one created, i did a
regular search. i see 2 normal.dotm and another one for outlook.dotm or
something to that effect, i should see a 3rd one since i renamed the original
one right? what can i do? do you know the exact location it is in, i have
vista ultimate running with office 2007 installed, i tried going to
application data and some directores but it keeps telling me i dont have
rights but i'm admin... other than this i think we're out of options, your
thoughts?

Thanks again,
Sunny

Re: word 2007 w/sp1 crashs, reinstalled, safemode, repair does not by Terry

There is something seriously wrong if Word is giving that error in Safe
Mode.

If you have renamed normal.dotm as normal.xxx, when Word runs next time, it
will create a new normal.dotm. But from what you say, Word won't run so it
has not created a new normal.dotm. Don't worry about that at the moment
because that is a symptom and not the cause.

To make sure that it isn't temp files causing the problem, you need to
navigate to your temp folder. Where this is depends on your OS, but in Vista
it is C:\Users/username/App Data/Local/Temp. With all applications closed
and after a fresh boot, this folder should be empty. Delete everything in
it.

However, I think there is something else at work here. Go to the Control
Panel, Programs and Features and right-click on Microsoft Office 2007 and
select REPAIR. Follow the on screen prompts. Reboot and test Word again.

It looks like this has to do with the Dell 5100 series drivers. I
uninstalled the Dell printer and it worked again. After that I
removed my 5110 drivers from the Server Properties and installed my
Dell 5110cn with the 5100 series drivers in Vista and it worked okay.
Hope this helps.

A printer driver conflict would cause this problem, but I thought that the
user had already set a different driver?

Thanks for the extra information.

Justin,
Thanks for the help man i deleted the dell 5100 printer in the printers tab
in control panel, then while having the printers tab open i went to file\run
as administrator \ server properties ... then went over to the drivers tab
and removed the dell 5100 printer driver and all is working :-)

Smit,
i suggest you delete the other printers and drivers as listed above that you
have added if you have a printer beside the dell 5100 and leave the normal
printers that i have listed in my previous response this way you can have a
clean slate and this should solve the problem i hope.

Terry,
Thanks for your assistance and patience in working with me on this. I truly
do appreciate it. i tried the suggested cleaning of the temp directory but
it did not work either(just a fyi incase you run into this again). Lastly,
where exactly is the normal.dot file located in vista, i did a search but i
wanted to know the exact location if you can let me know i'd appreciate it.

THANK YOU EVERYONE!!!!!!!!!!!!
