I have been using EndNote X1 with Word 2007 since last December with
no problems. Last

night MS did several automatic updates to Vista (32) on my machine
and, whether by

coincidence or not, Word will no longer start except in safe mode.
Furthermore, every

time I try to start it without using safe mode it freezes on start up
while displaying

=93Running virus scan=94 at the far left of the Word status bar.
Furthermore if I force a

shutdown of Word I get in error box saying that =93EndNote X1
encountered an unknown

error.=94

I tried shutting down my virus checker (Trend PC-Cillin 2008) to no
avail. I also tried

doing a repair on EndNote from the EndNote installation program also
with no success. I

have found several discussions which suggests that EndNote can trigger
this problem but

I've seen no solution and the EndNote tech people have not gotten that
to me on this one

as of yet. Probably the most discouraging discussion I have seen is
at

http://www.tutorials-win.com/WordDoc/Word-wont-299921/

where an Office MVP is quoted:

Word and EndNote are the two most important tools of my trade and I
desperately need

them to work together. I suppose I could restore the system partition
from my last

image prior to the MS upgrades but that would obviously only be a
temporary solution=97and

it assumes that the upgrades are responsible in some way which may not
be the case.

Any help greatly appreciated=97I desperately need Word and EndNote to

I would concentrate on the Word problem first because it may be causing the
error in EndNote and not the other way around.

I'd start by stopping the AV action as Word seems to be complaining about
it. If it is Norton AV, then disable the Office Plug-in option in NAV
Advanced Preferences.

If Word still doesn't start in Safe Mode, then try running Regedit and
deleting the Word DataKey.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\version number\Word\Data

If Word still fails to start in Safe Mode, then check that the printer
driver wasn't damaged by the update. Try selecting a different printer and
testing.

Actually, Word does start in safe mode. Also I don't use Norton--I
use Trend PC-Cillin 2008 but this behavior continues even with PCC
disabled completely.

Thanks for the suggestions though!

That Word starts in Safe Mode proves that Word is OK. If has to be a problem
with Add-ins. But from your description, it is Anti Virus causing the
principal problem. I'd check on the PC-Cillin support site to see if it is a
known bug.

But have you ever had NAV installed - say as a free trial when your
purchased the PC? NAV leaved registry entries behind that break Word.
