Word Attachments won't Open from Outlook
I'm running Office 2002 with Windows XP Pro.
Periodically, I have a problem where Word attachments will not open
when double clicking on the attachment from an Outlook email. Word
begins to open, but then gives an application error and closes. I
apologize that I don't have the exact error message, I will be sure to
get it next time.
Once the error occurs the first time, it will never open another Word
attachment until the "fix" below is performed. Once the "fix" is
performed, than the system will operate normally for sometimes 2 days,
and sometimes 2 months, and then the issue will arise again.
Some observations on the system:
1) Norton Antivirus 2002 is installed, and is updated, and the system
has been scanned on several occasions with nothing found.
2) Normal.dot file is occasionally appearing to be corrupt when the
problem occurs - it has been as large as 145K rather than the usual
25-35K. Deleting it and allowing Word to recreate it brings it back
to "normal" size until the next time.
3) I have noticed that on this system, Normal.dot is showing a new
date (and time) modified EVERY time that Word is closed. I have
verified that this is not normal behavior for Office 2000, but have
not verified it as normal or abnormal for Office 2002, as I do not
have that version running on any other computer - can someone advise
if this is normal?
The "Fix":
1) Close Outlook
2) Open any Word Document - at this time, Word gives several Recovery
Document Errors. Answering "OK" to all of these will clear them.
3) Close Word
4) Open Outlook and all attachments work as normal.
5) Deleting Normal.dot at this time "seems" to discourage the problem
from coming back for a longer period of time, but this is unproven
theory.
So, sorry for the long involved post, but this problem has been
reoccurring for several months, and it is extremely frustrating - I
would appreciate any help that anyone can give.
Thanks,

**4th time: Heeeeeeeeeeeeeelp!
I've posted this 3 times before, but never got an answer. Hope someone
can help.
I'm using XP Home and Word 2000. Periodically (at least once a day), I
get a save error. It happens only on documents that I am editing. The
error is:
"Word cannot complete the save due to a file permission error
(D:\...\[document name] ...)
D is a parition on the hard drive.
I have Word configured to always make a backup.
What's going on here and what should I do?

Does not open word file.
Everytime I try to open this document I get the error:
The document name or path is not valid. Try these
suggestions.
*Check the file permissions for the document or drive.
*Use the file open dialog box to locate the document.
This file is on a floppy disk. I checked for the

got the same error.
Please let me know about any other things I could try.

Ongong problem in Word
I have a problem which has been ongoing for months and I
believe this problem is related to WORD.
When I go to MY DOCUMENTS file and open a folder or
document, something strange happens when I close (X) the
file. Another distorted version of the foldor/document
name appears in MY DOCUMENTS. Is is always the same as
the file name that I just opened and then closed, but the
first two file name digits are replaced by ~$.
For example, whenever I open and then close a file
named "Personal", another (2nd) distorted version ot
Personal appears as ~$ersonal. Then things get locked up
and weird messages come up unless I first delete
~$ersonal. When I delete the ~$ versions, the go directly
to my Recycle Bin and store up until deleted from the
bin.I hope I have not confused you; any suggestions?

Error in my Word document!!
HELP!!
I have recently finished a larger report on Word but when
I went to print it I got an error that read:
-Dr.Watson for Windows NT-
"An application error has occured and an application log
is being generated. WINWORD.exe
Exception:access violation (0xc0000005),Address:
0x301e4f1f".
...and then it kicks me out of Word.
This only happens with this particular file, no others so
it must be an error in my document(?).
I tried to "save as" under another name but the error
carries through. At some instances when I try to save it
will come up with the same error and kicks me out of word.
I tried to copy and paste the document to another new
document but it won't even pastebecause I instantly get
kicked out!
I have photographs, Table of contents and List of figures
(which is created by "comments" below the pictures).
I have tried deleting the photographs and then printing
but the error still occurs.

Make Word open other file types
I have just been upgraded to Windows XP/Word 2002
(10.4219.4219 sp2).
I handle a wide range of file types which I had previously
been able to open easily in Word from Explorer using "open
with". Now, with the new, "improved" version, I only get
a message saying that my file "is not a valid Win32
application". I have changed the file associations that
set which program starts when you open a file.
Unfortunately, Word does not trust my judgment and I still
get the error.
I can still open these files without problems if I open
Word and then do "File, Open". But, it is considerably
less convenient to do it this way. If anyone knows a way
around this new dummy-proof feature, I would greatly
appreciate it. (Other than renaming all documents
to ".doc")

Phantom file
The last time I was in Word, it crashed and I thought I
had lost the file I was working on. I created it again
and saved it to disk. Today when I went back to Word and
clicked on the shortcut, it opened the file I thought I
had lost. The same thing happens if I click on the new
document icon. I have tried searching for it to delete
it but search does not come up with anything when I
searche it by either name that shows up for it (Document1
or a name derived from information on the first line). I
have also tried saving the file and then deleting it but
it still shows up every time I open a new document. Does
anyone know how to get rid of it? This file was formatted
differently than usual so every time this opens as a new
file, I have to reformat each new document. Thanks to
anyone who can help. Tag: windows installer Tag: 62633

will sometimes hang when printing or saving a document.
She also says a dialog comes up that says "Word is

Since this is not an error that I can make happen at
will, I can't be any more specific, but I have never

MS Security Update causes word open problems?

* Check the file permissions for the document or drive.

The "Web Info" button on the error message window sends me
to KB article 224016. But none of the scenarios there are

My speculation is that a recent MS Security "Update" that
deals with openning "unsafe" shortcuts messes with Word's
mechanism for openning real, legit documents.
