When i use the Office software, and i try to save a file into a folder, the
whole programme freezes, and takes a while until it returns to normal.
However the othe rprogrammes on windows xp work well, and do not do this.
the problem lies only when i use office.

What version of Office is this? A few versions back, Outlook's Journal
feature could cause the kind(s) of slowdown you're seeing. In Outlook's
menu, Tools - Options - Journal Options lets you control whether Outlook
will keep track of editing Office documents. It can slow Office down
considerably, and should be turned off unless you actually rely on that
feature.

Right-click on the My Computer icon on the Windows desktop,
left-click on Disconnect Network Drive, and disconnect any mapped
drives that are not currently available.
