    - Section Breaks: New Page vs. Odd Page I'm trying to insert "Odd Page" section breaks in a document. They appear to go in all right, but when I come back to the document later, Word has changed them all to "New Page" breaks. Is there some internal setting that I need to change to stop this behavior?     - Insert File "as Link" with a Range not working with WordML 2003 Do In a new Word 2003 document, do the following: 1) Click on the Insert/File command 2) On the "Insert File" dialog, Browse to a WordML (2003) document 3) Click on Range and enter a bookmark name 4) Click on the drop-down "Insert" button menu and click on "Insert as Link" No content appears... The field instruction is apparently inserted properly, but it doesn't include the bookmarked content in the document. If in step (2) I select an equivalent DOC file instead of the WordML document, the bookmarked text appears. If I skip step (3) and do not specify a range, then the entire WordML document contents appear. If in step (4) I select the plain "Insert" command instead of "Insert as Link", the bookmarked text appears. It seems to be the combination of (a) WordML, (b) Range, and (c) "Insert as Link" that causes the problem. Has anyone run into this problem and if so, is there a way to get this to work?     - Word 2000 only opens Groupwise I am running Win XP Pro at work. I have Office 2000 and Groupwise 6 point something. In Word, when I try to open a document using the "Open" Icon the programs goes the the Groupwise Library. This is the same as a problem I had using Excel. That was corrected using this forum.     - Not only does Word crash, it kills the whole machine Hey there! I have a customer with a bit of a problem, and it's turned into one that I cannot fix... so I need some help. This is regarding Office XP Professional. There are 2 important documents that they cannot access... When they launch Word, and open the file from the File Menu (or by opening the files directly) the whole machine goes black and locks up instantly. They reboot, and it try it again, and it comes up with the document recovery screen... Selecting the document from that screen starts the process all over again. I have ran hardware tests on the whole machine and everything is coming back 100% fine. No bad RAM, no corrupted HD, or anything like that. I've un-installed Office and re-installed it to no avail. If I email any of these documents to myself and open them on another computer, they open just fine. Coincidentally, they are both resume files. Every other file we've attempted to open will open just fine. After re-booting, checking the Event Log, I get this: Hanging application WINWORD.EXE, version 10.0.6612.0, hang module hungapp, version 0.0.0.0, hang address 0x00000000.     - Page has gone haywire! Hi, I was working on a Word page which I had made by coping and pasting a page from my website that has a subscription form on it. All was well until I tried to insert a page break after the form. The form was close to the bottom of the page and I think I might have inserted the break before the end of the form code, although it looked like it was after the form. What happened was my entire page got corrupted and this symbol was scattered all over the page (In case it doesn't display it's Character code 00B6, Shortcut key Alt+0182).     - How do I open Word without using Frontpage? Everytime I open Word it tries to open Microsoft Office XP Professional with FrontPage. Then a window opens and says that the feature I am trying to use is on a CD or other removable disk that is not available. It then asks me to insert a disk and click ok.     - Can't open Word 9.0 doc in Word 10.0 or 11.0 My original Word 2002 doc was sent to an editor who returned a 'proof' copy to me that was created by the editor from my original using Word 9.0. Now I cannot open the proof copy in Word 10.0, getting error message: "The document name or path is not valid". Tried opening from within Word as well as by dbl-clk on filename in Explorer. Document properties look completely normal. I can, however, open it on another machine running Word 9.0.     - Visual C++ Runtime Error When using Word, it starts and you can type Ok. after a few minutes a box pops up showing the title "Visual C++ Runtime error" with "an error has occured in winword.exe" with an OK button. the OK button closes word and all data is lost.     - linked Excel files in Word: printout shows wrong files Hello, We've encountered a problem when printing out Word documents that have numerous linked Excel files. A linked Excel file may appear to be pulled in correctly onscreen, but in the actual printout, a different file shows up in its place. The same problem carries forward when we print out a PDF of the Word file. The linked file in question is often one that is linked to other Word files, which likely complicates matters.     - Word should work in landscape on a custom paper size When a custom paper size is created in Word it does not seem to work properly in landscape mode. It forces either the left or right margin to be large. As an example I tried to make a custom paper size 8.75" wide and 5.75 " high and print in landscape mode. Each time I attempted this Word insisted one of the margins was outside the printable area and forced the right margin to 3.35". If I chose to ignore it, it would let me make the edits but only print to its percieved right margin.     - Document Map and Reviewing Pane aren't displayed simultanously I have the Document Map visible on the left side of the main window. If I make a selection in the document and click on Insert -> Comment the Document Map gets hidden and the Reviewing Pane appears. So far so good. However, after inserting the comment, I want to get back to my previous view. If have different possibilities, e.g.: 1. Resize the Reviewing Pane until it disappears 2. Click on the Reviewing Pane button in the Reviewing Toolbar 3.     - frames insert thousands of blank pages Having terrible trouble with inserted text boxes. When I insert 2 text boxes on adjacent pages word (word 2002 10.2627.2625) inserts over 10 000 blank pages (i stoped it from repagenting at 10k). I get this error even when the text boxes are completely empty. If the text boxes are separated by more than one page, no problem, if they are not, sometimes word inserts thousands of blank pages. Tried many of the text box options with no joy. Word is doing this on its own, there is no VBA modules etc in this document. If i convert the text boxes to frames, its seem to be a reasoanble work around. (took me hours to figure that out of course) However this seems a scrappy workaround for commercial software, does anyone know what the problem is here? My guess is word is trying to put both text boxes on the same page (in some fashion), but they wont fit, and so it keep increasing the page number in the hope of finding a page they will fit on.....     - "save" or "save as" will not function unless Word 2003run in safe clkg on SAVE or SAVE AS produces no result. clkg on X for closing brings the usual "do you want to save, etc..." clkg on YES produces no result; clkg on NO will close WORD without saving, of course.     - Can not seem to find away to turn off email tool bar in some Word I have found two different client machines that have what would look like the email sendto, carbon copy, blind carbon copy and subject fill in boxes at the top of the Word application that I can not seem to find away to get rid of. I have right clicked on the blank area of the tool bar to see what tool bars are active but I find that the email tool bar is NOT active. I have also tried to go into the customizing of the app and still could not find a way to get rid of it for my clients.     - Word repaginates continuously Since late this afternoon, my Word software has developed a problem whereby it continually repaginates some of my documents (not all, just some). I have observed the problem in documents derived from three different template files (none of them Normal.dot), and the problem is in multiple documents, not just in one or two. In the documents that show the problem, if I switch to Normal View (I usually work in Page Layout View), the page number shows correctly initially, and then changes to say "Page 0 Sec 1 1/1", as if the document was on both page 0 and page 1 of 1. Other symptoms: - When I first load one of the offending documents, it initially shows I'm on page 1 of 2 (these are documents with multiple pages, mostly in the hundreds), and remains like that. - If I Page Down, the page count begins to go up, as if Word is repaginating - After a few seconds, the page counting re-starts - It then begins to repaginate rapidly, showing "Word is repaginating x.doc, page n. Press Esc to cancel." (I do not normally get this message while repagination is occurring). - The only template file that has changed today is Normal.dot. None of the other templates from which these documents are derived have changed recently (going by their Modified dates). I have tried: - Deleting Normal.dot and making Word re-create it - Restoring Normal.dot from a backup copy from yesterday evening (before the problem manifested itself) - Repairing my Office installation I have found articles about troubleshooting damaged Word documents, but I am not yet convinced that this is my problem, given all of the above (I hadn't even touched some of these files today until AFTER I first observed the problem). I have good anti-virus software (Command AntiVirus), and have scanned both my templates and the documents showing the error, and have found no infections (in any case, I am not in the habit of opening attachments in odd-looking emails). Can anyone suggest other possible causes of these symptoms? Is there any software I can use to verify corruption of a Word document? The procedures outlined in Article 826864 are a bit hit and miss, and that article doesn't even say what it means by instruction 1: "Look for similar behaviour in other documents". Okay, yes, I've looked and found it. WHAT DOES THAT MEAN??? Does it mean I DON'T have corruption or that I DO? I have not found similar behaviour in other software. Again, WHAT DOES THAT MEAN??? The article is a bit of a chocolate teapot in this respect. I also don't have an "Open and Repair" option on my Open dialog box, so the first suggested remedy doesn't even look possible.     - Saving existing document results in .tmp filename Hi, When an existing Word 2003 document is opened, editied and then the user clicks on "Save" Word will rename the file to one of those "wrlxxxx.tmp" filenames, and save it to a temp folder. I know Word does this in the background automatically, but it is getting hung up somewhere. The user has to remember to click on "Save As" and manually re-enter the proper file name each time.     - Word shuts down and gives error code when deleting in dual screen I am using a Compaq notebook and have the secondary monitor contected to form and extened screen. I open Ms Word 2003 and launch a document on both the extended monitor(2) and the laptop monitor(1). I then go and highlight the section I want to delete on the extended monitor(2) as soon as I highlight and hit delete the program freezes. I then receive an error message stating "Word has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for any inconvienience". It is at this point Word closes my documents and then restarts and shows them as being recovered. ****Attempted fixes****** (1)So far I have tried a seperate secondary monitor and it had the same error. (2)I have tried working without the seconday and I have no problems at all. (3)I have even tried to use another notebook a Fujitsu Lifebook and had the same problem on it as well.     - Word 2003 crashing some other W2K applications Hi, So I've just repaired my installation of WIN 2K, and reinstalled Office 2003 and done all of the windows updates that are available. Then run resistry firstaid to clean things up. Now when I open windows it keeps asking about a macro problem with pdfmaker.dot. So I disable the macros. Shouldn't Word be looking for the normal.dot file instead of this pdfmaker.dot?? So in trying to delete all normal.dot files so that word will create a new one when it opens I start My Computer. When I attempt to search for the normal.dot file... or anything at all I get an error: Office Pro comes up saying it needs to configure Office 2003 and it begins to configure something. Then I get a Program Error that tells me explorer.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows. And it creates an error log. My Computer then closes as do all of my applications running in the task bar in the lower right corner except for McAfee security center. Why is all of this happening? I have references in my document with the \n flag to show the number assigned
to the bookmark (H1 level). It should show Article Three or Article Four,
etc but instead is showing Article and omitting the number; Other references
to bookmarks at a different level (H2) work fine and show Section 2, etc.

Yes, Article is part of the H1 designation so it should reference Article
One, Article Two, etc. just as Section is part of the H2 designation and
indicates Section 1, Section 2, etc.
