Workgroup templates open slow in MSOXP
Our workgroup templates open extremely slow in MS Office
XP. They are about 600 files totaling over 40 megs. They
are also broken up in 26 subdirectories.
It gives you an hour glass for about 14 seconds before
the templates come up.
This slow 14 seconds is the same whether pointing to it
by UNC or normal path.
On the other hand, it pops up immediately when the
directory is placed on the local computer and you point
at it instead of a network path. I tried it on NTFS and
FAT32 since I wanted to eliminate the indexing service
possibly being the reason for improved speed. It just
pops up in a blink real good.
This is true of many brand new blank templates authored
in MSOXP as well as our legacy templates authored in
MSO95 & MSO97.
All MSOXP service packs and hot fixes are up to date as
well and it still has this issue
Unless there is a fix I simply couldn't find, I think
MSOXP has a definite problem here that needs to be
addressed.
Thanks,

When scrolling through a Word (XP) document using the

Office Update Errors
Hi,
After going to the Office Updates page, I started
downloading the appropraite patches. I was unable to
install two of them, Word 2002 Security Patch: KB824934,
& Office XP WordPerfect 5.x Converter Security Patch:
KB824938. After downloading them, it asked me to load
the the diskc for Office to complete the installation. I
don't have the disks because my computer came with Office
XP preinstalled.
What can I do so I can finish installing the
security patches? Thanks. Tag: print error message Tag: 65343

"Microsoft Word has encountered a problem and needs to
close" Error Message.
I tried the recommended fix (using Windows XP & Microsoft
Works Suite 2001 with MS Word 2000). I followed the
advise in your Method 1. To remove the Compatibility Mode
Setting in Windows XP, but the check marks were not
there. Also tried Method 2: create a new normal.dot
File. Search did not locate any normal.dot file. I know
there is one, because each time I exit from Word I get a
pop up question if I want to save the Normal File.
Do you have any other recommendations that I can use? Tag: print error message Tag: 65331

Word 97 help download
About two months ago I downloaded a upgraded Help file
from the MS web site. Later, while using Word 97 I tried
to use Help. The Help file was not readable.
I went back to the MS download site and downloaded all
upgrades for MS Word 97 in general and MS Word 97 help.
This did no good, I still could not get to Help in MS Word
97. I then tried to rebuild MS Word 97 usind my SR-1
Office 97 CD. The CD will not read MS Word 97 nor the HELP
file for MS Word. The rest of the CD loads fine.
I went to an online virus scanning service and scanned my
hard drive, but found none.

default value of a text-formfield > 256 characters
Hi,
My question is: How can I put more than 255 characters in
the formfields default value?
The next code fills my text-formfield perfect wth more
than 256 characters:
Dim FmFld As FormField, Str1 As String
Str1 = (a long string > 256 characters)
FmFld.Range.Fields(1).Result.Text = Str1
Or if you're referring to the formfield by name:
ActiveDocument.Bookmarks("Text1").Range.Fields
Selecting the entire document (<ctrl> + <a>) and updating
it (<F9>) will fill the formfield with it's default value.
But I can not get more than 255 characters into the
default value.
How do I put more than 255 characters in it's default
value. the next code will not work:
Activedocument.Formfields("Text1").Textinput.Default = Str1
The formfields default code will lose everything after the
a certain position (about 255).
How can I put more than 255 characters in the formfields
default value? Tag: print error message Tag: 65306

Equation editor styles when multiple documents are open
I use the equation editor in Word. Quite often I need to
change the styles of parts of an equation.
If I have only one document open then I can change styles
in the equation editor quite happily.
If, however, I have multiple documents open then
the styles refuse to change. I have to shut all other
documents down before I can change styles within the
equation editor.
This seems to happen with every release of Word and every
version of Windows that I have tried.

Word encountered a prob & needs to close
I have been unable to locate a cause and/or solution to
this and hope someone out there can help?
We are running Windows XP and Word 2000 (Office 2000).
Several of us are encountering the "Microsoft Word has
Encountered a problem and needs to close..." to which you
lose any unsaved data. I have started the habit of
frequent saving, but the distraction of having it close
and then having to go back in and all is very irritating.
Knowledge Base has nothing posted for this error yet. Was
told that it was related to Outlook and screensavers, but
the fixs they gave didn't solve the problem. Must be
deeper than that.

Problem with Office Removal Wizard
I have a large hard drive partitioned into several smaller partitions.
My operating system, Windows XP Pro, and some applications are in the C:
partition. Office 2000 is in the D: partition.
I had originally installed Office 97, then upgraded to Office 2000,
while still running Windows 98 SE. At that time, all Office 2000 apps
were working fine. However, after upgrading to Windows XP, Word 2000
crashes on startup. The other Office 2000 apps still work.
I've tried troubleshooting the Word 2000 problem extensively without
success. I've been limping along using Word 2.0 instead for over a year.
I decided at this point the best course of action might be to totally
uninstall all vestiges of both Office 2000 and Office 97 and then
reinstall Office 2000 in the C: partition.
I got the Office 2000 resource kit and installed it. Then I tried to use
the Office Removal Wizard from the resource kit to fully uninstall
Office. To my dismay, it appears that the removal wizard only looks at
the C: partition. It offers to remove some shared files that it finds in
the C: partition, but doesn't appear to detect any of the Office 2000
apps installed in the D: partition.
I know I can use Add/Remove to uninstall most of Office 2000, but I want
to also purge any remaining vestiges of Office 97. I've noticed that the
registry contains trees both for Office 8.0 (Office 97) and Office 9.0
(Office 2000). I've also found entries for Publisher 97. I'm tempted to
delete any of these that are left after uninstall, but I'm not sure if
that is safe.
Any suggestions on how to get the removal wizard working or other
techniques to do a full uninstall? Thanks!
John

WD2000 not saving--catastrophically
Twice this week I've been working all day on WD2000, which
I have set to autosave very frequently (I'm a writer, and
have learned to be obsessive about saving), and have
encountered late on these two occasions error messages,
when I go to manual save, telling me that I can't save the
file I'm working on because I'm attempting to save it
under a file name that's already open. This is not the
case, and trying to come out of Word causes it to crash.
When I go to open the file I've been working on all day
(here's the real problem) I find that none of my auto or
manual saves have taken. Norton registers no over-writing
of backup files, and files saved with alternate file names
(in order to get around the error message) are empty
(files size 0KB). The second time it happened, I manually
copied and pasted the contents of the file into a
completely new file; that too was empty when I went to
open it.
I ran an autofix of Word after the first time it
happened. It happened again anyway.
Any thoughts?

Word Open errors-can't rename Normal.dot
I have Windows ME with Word 2000.
I am having similar problems as I have seen people
describe in other posts.
Started with message saying dangerously low in resources,
which was followed by a Word crash which was then followed
by not being able to open Word at all.
I uninstalled then reinstalled, then came to this site to
read the help posts.
I used the: winword.exe /a to open word and also deleted
the Data Key.
The only thing I could not do was rename or delete the
Normal.dot, I have tried but it says it is in use and
cannot be renamed or deleted. I tried closing all programs.
I can open Word but when I try to close it I get the
following message:
This file is in use by another application

Word 2002/XP Exceptions - problem Solved
I have Word 2002 / XP pro on a laptop. Word opened a
document and after a few seconds it generated an error msg
and sometimes hung. This happened for all files. I
disabled NortonAV but this didn't help. After spending
lots more time searching for a solution, I copied one of
the word files to the shared drive of a PC runing W98 and
word; opened the file there OK made a small mod and saved
it back to the share. Copied it back to correct locatin on
laptop. Since then had no problems with Word/XP? Enabled
Norton AV and still OK. There is NO SIGN of a normal.dot
file on the laptop? Should there be? There is a Normal.fmt
file with type Stitch? An idea what this is?
