    - Word won't open up a report to edit I was working on before. Got . I cannot open up a term paper due on this Thursday that I need to work on tonight- thursday which I already stated. It's Word XP. I upgraded Norton last night and shut it off to no avail. Something about global normal.dot. Please help!!!!! I've done a repair of word to no avail, I'm freaking out on this one!     - Win XP - Bottom of page does not view/print I can create a new doc or open a previous one & sometimes I cannot view the bottom of the page &/or the bottom will not print either. This happens with/without headers/footers. Under "help" I run "detect and repair" & this fixes the problem.     - MS Word - Indexing problem I don't know you folks and we don't know if you know the answer to this question, MS Word GURUS. It involves orphan index page numbers appearing in an MS Word index. We've tried to remove these entries and their corresponding XE tags, but the regenerated-updated index still picks up the old page numbers for the removed index item/entry and continues to display them in the "new" index. Is there a fix for this problem that perhaps involves a hidden file such as a concordance file? Does Word generate a hidden standard index file that contains a 2-column table for index entries and corresponding page numbers? If so, where is it so we can KILL it!     - Word opens Reviewing toolbar when I open someone else's document Problem: I normally like to have only the standard and formatting toolbars open. If I open something written by someone else, the reviewing toolbar shows up. I can't find a way to prevent this behavior. Any ideas? MS: if you are reading this, I tried to submit this issue on your website, but to make a suggestion, I have to get a Microsoft Passport. I have no desire to get one of these, since it is used almost nowhere, and since it requires me to give data to MS that I would rather MS not have.     - Word 2003 Freezes I have Windows XP Orifessional and Office 2003 Professional, and Norton Antivirus 2004. When I work on a document in WORD 2003 and it's on a floppy disk, and I close the docment and remove the disk. and then go to file/ open to open up a document that's on the C drive.. the coumpter spins the A drive and keeps on spinning it and keeps clacking. I try to shut down WORD, but it won't close. Then I do the end task (It says Word is not responding) and it still won't close and the A drive keeps clacking and spinning. I have to shut down the whole computer in order to get it to stop. It never did this before. A window used to come up to tell me that there was no disk in the a drive, and now it doesn't come up at all. All it does is look for a disk and spin and make noise. I tried to do the repair and detect in WORD and that didn't help. Should I uninstall Office 2003 professional and reinstall it? This all started when my son was working on a Word document and he closed it and did file/open and the open box came up and he changed his mind and removed the disk and clicked cancel. The computer clacked and spinned the a drive until we had to shut down the computer. Did he break WORD? I have a new Dell 8400 computer. Please help me.     - 2003 Cannot mail merge f/Outlook - unable to obtain list of table. I'm trying to do a mail merge from Word 2003 using Outlook 2003 contacts. I keep getting the message "unable to obtain list of tables from the data source" with no further explanation. I can't find any help as to what is wrong. I did find reference online to a similar error message for Office 2002 (not 2003) for Internet Browsers settings, but mine match what that showed. Does anyone know what I should do? Thanks!     - Command cannot be performed because a dialog box is open After upgrading from Office 97 to Office 2003 I receive an error "Command cannot be performed because a dialog box is open" the first time I open a document by double clicking on it through explorer on a Win2k workstation (only happens the first time). Windows XP workstations do not produce this error message. In the background I can see where Word is asking for the username/Initials. I assume this is because the profile information has not yet been created. Is there a workaround or fix for this on Win2k? P.S.     - word generates too many rubbish files When I operate on a word file, a lot of tmp files such as ~WRL0565.tmp, ~WRL0212.tmp are generated automatically and fastly. I feel they are very disgusting since within half an hour, more than 20 of such files will be generated. I tried repairing and reinstalling. But the problem can not be fixed.     - Text Encoding ??? I am about two hours and five pages into a paper for school ad decide to save all the hard work. In the proscess of saving, office locks up. The eternal hourglass,... I have to "End Task" to get it to clear and close. The document "is" in the folder I was trying to save it to, however; it is a lighter color icon, as if it is still open somewhere? I double click on it to open it and it says, "Select the encoding that makes your document readable." There is a list of things to choose from, but they all seem to be different versions of boxes and squigles? Is this document retrievable, and if so, how do I go about it? All of a sudden, we have started getting this Microsoft Word alarm "This document contains one or more links to other files. Do you want to update this document with the data from the linked files?" We can't figure out what the data from the linked files is. We have a group from GoldMine that we merge the Word letter with and it should print a letter to each individual in our group. We have a macro in Word that pulls the name and address information from GoldMine in our merge.     - What is "Smart UI 32-bits gateway - Reply I had the exact same thing with installation of a Xerox printer. After checking the whole thing out, I've noticed my Windows 2000 did NOT have the file "ntvdm.exe" in my winnt\system32 folder. Some trojan probably deleted it. I recovered the file from the winnt\dllcache folder (also recovered "autoexec.nt"). Simply search your entire HD for these 2 and copy them to the winnt\system32 folder. After the files where recovered, the problem disappeared. The problem occured since many propery sheets (like the printer settings) are implemented using this Smart UI library which is a 16-bit application. Since win2k is native 32-bit, the ntvdm (virtual dos machine) is needed to emulate a 16-bit environment for the execution.     - Error in document generation, Word crash I have done a program that print out some (about 20) Word documents. The documents are linked to an Access database and some data in the documents are from this. I want that each document close after it has been printed out, and in the beginning it is no problem. But after a wile my program gets a RPC error and Word stop responding. I have figure out that the error occur when I try to close the document. If I leave the documents opened it is no problem, but when I close the documents manual Word crash.     - Evil Doc Hangs Word Yes I have a document that causes Word to hang under a variety of cicumstances including Save As, Printing, and selecting large areas of text. The doc. is based on a template and I have many other documents based on the same template which exhibit none of these problems - this particular doc. is just evil. There are no macros, one graphic (inserted from .jpg file). I am up to date with NAV etc. so I don't believe there's anything here other than some formatting or ??? that is causing the doc. to hang Word. Any suggestions are welcome. Ps.     - Problem pasting from Word to other applications I have Word 2002 as part of Works suite. Sometimes I can copy/paste within Word but cannot copy/paste to other applications, such as into a website in IE or Firefox. This is an intermittent problem. All will be well for a while then it occurs and continues. It seems it may affect one part of a document but not another. Sometimes I copy elsewhere and come back to the original problem area and it works. Sometimes the problem is cured by exiting and reopening Word, but sometimes not. Clues: - When looking in Paste Special, unformatted text may not be available, though this is not always so. - I use Clipmate. In the Clipmate title window I should see the text to be copied. In fact it says "Other:" followed by date and time. The tabbed type-windows available are RTF and HTML but not Text. Even these type-windows are empty. - The problem occurs even when not using Clipmate, so that does not seem to be the at the origin of the problem. - I have uninstalled and reinstalled Word. No help. - When the fault is about to happen the copy takes a little longer. I can tell this as when using Clipmate there is a beep on copying.     - Word randomly corrupts text Hello, I have a really odd problem with Word 2002 on XP. When workin on a document, Word will randomly replace a paragraph with currupt tex somewhere in the document. It only seems to happen on files stored on our Server PC, and i happens on more than one computer. You're just typing along, and yo scroll up through the document to find that a paragraph or two are jus gone, replaced with junk. We have run anti-virus & Ad-aware sweeps on all PC's, they foun nothing.     - Error when saving shared document in Shared Workspace We are using shared workspaces and Sharepoint Portal in our company. I have users that are editing a shared document in a document library. If more than one user has the same document open at the same time, and one user does NOT close the document after editing and saving, then the other cannot save the document until the first user closes the document.     - WinXP SP2 vs OFFICE XP I have come across a problem with Service Pack 2 for XP Pro and Office XP. On a workstation if you try to load up say 19 documents all at once. it will open fine. Do this over a shared network drive on a server running Server 2003. It hangs. and after say about 5 minutes or more it may resolve it self. The strange thing is that it seems to affect everybody on the network. Now I've checked patches, network, switches, cabling.... Nothing else is causing it. But when I remove SP2.. hey presto it works like a dream. I did some testing to see if I could resolve this with disabling firewall, installing SP3 for Office XP.. Still unable to get it to work with XP Pro SP2. So I now have removed SP2 from all workstations and I'm yet to receive any reports of it locking up. If there is a hotfix could you let me know. Sometimes in the past several weeks I wanted to "save as" Word 6.0/95 but now, even when I start a new document it will ONLY save as Word 6.0/95 even when I don't want it to and says hypertext won't be blue etc etc.... I have a database in Access that has a medium time stamp. No matter what I
do, every time I merge it into Word it gives me a long time stamp and not
the medium one. e.g I want 10:00 AM but instead I get 10:00:00 AM.
Everything place in Access is switch to the medium timestamp - is there
anything else I can do

In Word go to Tools/Options/General and turn on "Confirm conversions
at Open". Then select the Access database again for your data source
and when prompted select the DDE method.
