    - Crash on Table Edit I spent much of the last two weeks at work working on a document in which I made use of tables to achieve various fomatting - a line with left justified and right justified text - several lines with columns of vertically alligned text - that sort of thing. All went well - for a while. But, then as we got close to the deadline for finishing with this document I encountered a problem. Whenever I tried to edit the structure of one of these tables or delete one, Word would crash. "Word has encountered a problem and neeeds to close . . . ." When I restarted with the repaired document, there were no repairs to see, but there was a message that that the file had incluced a "date integrity error." I was using Word 2003 on a computer with Windows XP SP2. One additional clue: The file had been processed by the "Remove Hidden Information" tool from Microsoft.     - Word 2003 File Saving Error When I am using Microsoft Word 2003 and saving my document periodically, after 15-20 minutes the name in the blue bar changes to it's temp name (~$filename), and it won't let me save it. Furthermore, the original file disappears and is replaced by the temp name in Windows Explorer. When I try to open the file in recent documents it can't be found, and when I click on the temp file it can't be openend. The only way around it is to copy the text, open a new document and paste it in, delete the temp file, and re-save it. It won't let me save the file as ANY name after it changes to its temp name. In Microsoft Word, whether using keyboard layouts Arabic (101) or Arabic (102), I encounter the following two problems: 1. While all buttons relative to Arabic letters function normally, when I push the buttons relative to the Arabic numbers nothing shows up!!! I even tried to push all the buttons on my keyboard to see whether other buttons correspond to the Arabic letters, no luck? I tried again changing the Arabic language to (Egypt) it did not work. What should I do? 2. While all commands present on the formatting toolbar function properly including Bold letters, Font, alignment, ectâ?¦, font size does not. In fact, when changing font size using the command on the formatting toolbar the command will always show the preset size it does not change; however; if afterwards I check font size in: Standard Toolbar Ã Format Ã Font, the font size indicates the one I have newly set!!! The major problem however, is that the font size on the document itself does not change?! N.B.: This problem is not present while working with English Language! What should I do?     - Printing a gradient background How can I get Word2003 to print a single full-page-stretched 2-colour gradient background, rather than tiling the small image many times across the page? The gradient background is displayed correctly in print preview, but then prints wrongly.     - Conversion from HTML to RTF does not work properly. When I converted a 5.5 MB dictionary (all in Latin charecters, using Times and Symbol fonts) to RFT for publishing, the following happened: (1) all the end-of entry markers CHR(183) (Greek full stop) disappeared. (2) combinations of accented letters (é, è etc.) with the following (or preceding) letter were changed into Chinese characters. Please, how can I prevent these changes to happen?     - Word & Excel opening problem I resently re-installed Microsoft Office on my XP. When I open Word and Excel it opens a window which says "Preparing to Install". This happens everytime! It won't go directly into the program if I select a particular document and indicates that a window is open and can't open the document until the window closes. I am presuming that it is the "Preparing to Install" window is the one delaying it. It really slows the process down. This doesn't happen with Power Point or other programs; just Word and Excel.     - Track Changes is off, but a formatting change is highighted... Hi All, I am editing a document in Word 2002 (10.5522.4219) SP-2. in preparation for delivering some Word formatting training. It had track changes enabled when I received it. I have turned off Track Changes and Accepted All Comments. However, when I then apply a Heading style, a change is tracked.     - Word settings won't hold I recently upgraded to Microsoft Office 2003 (student-teacher edition), hoping in part to get rid of a persistent problem in which my preference settings are constantly replaced by a consistent set of settings that I never chose. I carefully uninstalled the old version before installing the new one, but the problem persists. Nothing seems to prevent this, not even going through the register (at great peril, I know) and deleting all the references to Microsoft Office I could find. Creating a new normal.dot template didn't help, either. I can't figure what triggers this reversion to the unwanted settings. It doesn't happen immediately, or upon any event I can identify, but it never takes long. It either happens in the same computer session or the next time I turn on the computer and open Word. Other Office programs, Excel at least, don't seem to have this problem. Any suggestions? Thanks.     - File permission error and Windows Live OneCare I keep getting "word is unable to complete save due to file permission error" since installing Live OneCare. Disable the Firewall and the problem goes away. (Saving to my hard drive, btw)Obviously, I don't want to adhere to this workaround.     - MS Word crashes when typing "Quando me l'hanno" in italian Hi I have discovered that Word crashes when: - the language is Italian - I type the sentence "Quando me l'hanno" I use MS Office XP in italian with the last updates, this happens both on Win 2000 and Win XP (both updated). Is there anybody that could explain why this happens? Perhaps the spelling/grammar checker fails? The sentence is a correct italian sentence, though incomplete.     - You do not have a World Wide Web start page registered on your computer. Using Word 2002, I get the above message when I click Start Page on the Web toolbar. Searching for the message, I find an Excel list of error messages noting that this is msg. # 2816. That's it. How do I register a WWW start page on my computer? Don't tell me to do it in IE7's Internet Options | General tab. The reason I'm messing with this in Word is that IE7 won't let me change my Start Page (Home Page). KB has been no help in this.     - Illegal operation in winword.exe A user has had a problem 2 times in this area. She opens a document (it's always a mail merge doc) and she gets the error illegal operation in winword.exe at 0167:301...... I've copied the file to other PC's and the same problem occurs. I've searched the MS KB but didn't find much help. Is there any way to recover the contents of the file? I've looked in the file recovery folder but there's no file.     - Track Changes & Word Crashing We have a file from another company where they have added track changes. When we open the Word file, within 3 seconds it crashes, recovers itself and then crashes again, and again. It would seem that the track changes are the problem. I've looked at the forum and it's obviously corrupt and there was a helpful link to how to mend a corrupt file - Save As Webpage (which I did) and then Save back to Word (which I don't seem to be able to do - it's not on the File type list). however, even the saved as webpage version doesn't show the tracked changes so probably not any point. All the other options (check section breaks) I can't do as the file crashes so quickly - before you do anything!     - Text not aligning with right hand indent marker. I run Word 97 and have a recent problem whereby any entered text overruns the right hand indent marker by 2 cms exactly according to horizontal rule. I can manipulate the text to somewhere near the marker (per document), by altering settings by trial and error in (File / Page setup) but this is a very temporary setting.     - Word toolbars/add ins I hope someone can help. I recently reformatted my pc. Re-installed office 2003 and did all the online updates. Since then my toolbar customizations refuse to stay, the toolbars revert to the default as soon as I close/re-open word. Also, I use a program called style writer, usually there is an add in in the toolbar, but when I try to install it now, it tells me I don't have word 2003 on my system, even though I know I do. I try to copy the necessary files to the word 2003 startup folder, which brings back the tool bar add in, but tells me it can't run it because the macro is disabled. So I lowered macro security then I get a "runtime error 9 subscript out of range" error message until I delete the files I'd put in the word startup file. I've tried re-installing word and deleting the normal.dot file and it's still the same. Does anyone have any idea what's causing this and how I can fix it?     - Cannot not access the help function I am getting a weird error whenever I click the Help Button. I could not find the answer to my problem on the regular site so I thought I would ask here. When I click the help button it displays this error message: The setup controller has encountered a problem during install. Please review the log files for further information on the error. When I press ok to exit out of the error, it then displays this: CLView can't display Help. CLView cannot install the necessary files due to Windows installer error 33.     - Word 2003 closes on its own shortly after opening When I open Microsoft Word (or Wordpad or an Outlook message) it closes itself after about ten seconds. If I open Task Manager after opening a Word document I can watch the winword.exe process start off using 11K of memory, then incrementally jump around 20K at a time until around 250K, at which point the application closes.     - Can't Fix Corrupted Document Hi, I was working on a document on one of my school's computers which I believe was running Office (MS Word) 2k3. I saved it to my zip drive only to discover (upon opening it on a different computer in the same computer lab) that the data was corrupt and unreadable. I have never had this happen before, even when saving other documents in this fashion. I've tried both the recovery/repair solutions Word suggests as well as just about every shareware recovery program in existence, but nothing fixes the file or even returns the text. Every time I run one of the programs, it either stops responding or just claims the repair process failed, and I'm back to square one.     - Word 2003 Slow Startup Recently, Word 2003 has begun talking more time to start up. Even when opening the application without a document specified, it takes 20 seconds after the application opens to when I can do something with the document (for instance, as soon as I see the blank document, I see the cursor on the empty page blink two or three times, I click on the File menu item, the blinking cursor goes away, and it takes 20 seconds before the menu dropdown appears and the cursor starts blinking again). When I open Word by clicking on a document, those 20 seconds are added to the normal time it takes to load the document. Opening an existing document within Word after the delay is over adds no further delay. None of the other Office 2003 applications show anything like this. I've tried: - starting Word by running "winword /a" - renaming Normal.dot - there's nothing in my Startup path, so I couldn't move or rename them - deleting the Data key in the registry - changing my default printer to another one that's definitely local (the prior one was definitely local, too) - turning off Journaling in Outlook - repairing Word To the best of my knowledge, this started sometime after installing Windows Defender, Microsoft OneCare, and IE7.     - Default return address disappears after closing program I use Office 2003. In Word 2003, i address envelopes using my printer. When I used to use Office 2000 with Word 2000, my default return address was stored so I could use it over again. In Word 2003, to make a return address the default, you enter it in a different location (Tools>Options>User Info.). When I close Word 2003 & re-open it the next day to address an envelope, my default return address is gone & I have to re-enter it. But when I try to "save" them, Word renounces "due to a file permission error". The only way is to "save AS" and manually re-enter the original file name. It appears as though 1 row of labels gets shifted onto a 2nd page, and when you print the page of labels, the text is no longer centered on the label, it's almost going onto 2 labels. When I opened a label template on a different computer and compared the 2 side by side, the difference I could see was that the bad template had 3 carriage returns on it, one at the very top, one at the bottom of the page and one at the end of the 2nd page. The working template only has one carriage return at the very bottom of the page. Word won't let me delete the extra carriage returns. What can I do?     - remove default shortcuts word 2007 my places bar One of the most annoying features of Office 2007 is that some moron at microsoft decided you want to save your files in 'my documents', 'my recent documents' and other useless rubbish bins. Although it is possible to add your own locations, it seems impossible to get rid of the damn defaults, which clutter up the bar. Why can't we decide for ourselves? The registry setting HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Common\Open Find\Places\StandardPlaces\ looks like the place to delete these buggers. But I have not managed to do it.     - Word 2003 Document Corruption I have a user that keeps having document corruption. He is able to work on the document for an extended period. Then at some point when opening it all the tables get corrupted. I am attaching a sample that is before and after corruption. I cannot determine what the cause is or how to prevent it. Any suggestions greatly appreciated. I tried to attach the files but they are too large for the news server. I can send them to someone if they want to look at them.     - Word 2000 Crash My Word 2000 decided to crash a few weeks ago. It was installed as part of Office 2000, and all other programs (excel, powerpoint, etc) still work. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling, I've also gone into the regedit (with the help of a computer programmer) to make sure all of Office was gone before reinstalling, and it still doesn't work. All other programs work. Other than putting in the recovery disk and wiping my computer completely clean (which I really don't want to do) any suggestions?     - doc signing - Word 2007 vs Word 2003 I have a certificate and key pair on a smart card. The certificate was obtained from a Microsoft 2003 CA on my local domain. It was created using the SmartcardUser template and I can use it for all the usual things (log onto Windows, sign/encrypt e-mail, sign Word documents, etc). I can successfully use this cert and key pair to sign Word documents with Word 2003, but I get an error when I use this same cert/key pair to sign documents with Word 2007. I traced the CSP calls that Word 2007 makes and it seems that Word 2007 is passing an incorrect parameter to CryptGetUserKey when it attempts to get a handle to the key pair associated with my certificate. Word 2007 passes a keySpec value AT_SIGNATURE to CryptGetUserKey. Since my cert and key pair is a AT_KEYEXCHANGE cert and key pair the call to CryptGetUserKey returns NTE_NO_KEY and Word 2007 errors out. Word 2003 correctly passes the keySpec value AT_KEYEXCHANGE to CryptGetUserKey and thus finds the key pair and successfully signs the document. It's been my experience with Word 2003 and previous versions of Word that the keySpec value passed to CryptGetUserKey is taken from the keySpec property of the certificate selected for signing. However, despite the fact that the 'keySpec' property on my cert is AT_KEYEXCHANGE, Word 2007 passes a keySpec value AT_SIGNATURE to CryptGetUserKey. I can successfully sign a document with Word 2007 only if I use signing-only (i.e. AT_SIGNATURE) cert/key pairs. I can't sign a document with Word 2007 with dual-use (i.e. AT_KEYEXCHANGE) cert/key pairs Is this new behavior intentional or is it a bug? Thanks, Jim Miller P.S. My organization has just recently went through a migration of computers, OS and Office products. My application was written in Office 2000 and now we are using Office 2003. Now when people use the application they get the following error: runtime error '-2147417848 (8001010a)' Automation error The message filter indicated that the application is busy. I have looked at the task manager (which show no current activity) and reviewed both the options tab in Word and in Access for any possible wrong settings with no success. This is my first computer and mostly used.     - Text Box creation over picture in header In Word 97 on Win 98, and in Word 2000 in Windows XP at least: A floating picture covering the whole page is in the template header (set to no wrap). When a new document is created from the template, it is not possible to start drawing a text box on the normal page within the area of the picture. Starting at the beginning: why would unplugging your computer during backup
affect anything other than the backup that was running? I'm perplexed by
what you say has happened and by what you have done.

However, if you uninstalled Office 2003, then Word (part of Office) is also
uninstalled. You need to find the installation disk and reinstall it. When
this happens next time, try running the Repair option rather than
uninstalling - which rarely repairs anything.
