Trouble Printing Doc Two-Sided with Word 2003 Under WinXP Pro SP2
Either Word 2003 or Windows SP Pro SP2 ignores the print settings that I
select when printing the document that has background printing disabled.
Instead of printing two-sided in keeping with the way the HP G85 AIO Color
Printer works, which is automatic two-sided printing of each page as they
print, something mistakenly assumes that the printer's only two-sided method
is manual. So, it prints all of the pages on one side, then a dialogue pops
up telling me to turn the pages over and reinsert them into the hopper to
print side 2. That's not what I need. It's certainly not what I want.
Consequently, I'd very much appreciate being advised as to how I can get
these documents to print exactly in keeping with the print selections that
I've made.

Replace uses all caps
I am having an issue when I am editing a document, and I want to find and
replace words.
The feature finds and replaces all the text but the text is all caps. I
have not been able to find a setting to correct this. It not a document
problem as this happens in multiple documents.
Any help would be appreciated.

Errors Saving Files.
I have an interesting error. Windows XP Pro running Word2000 This happens
when I create a new file, then try to save it on a Win98 "Server" share. It
will only save the file if I don't attempt to alter the "save" name. If I
type in a different name, I get an error "The folder is not availabe or
password protected"
This is NOT a rights issue, I can do any create, save, rename function I
want on the share.
Any Ideas??

Whenever I open a .rtf file it opens up encrypted or in strange letters (the

Trouble With Document in Word 2003 Under WinXP Pro
I have a couple of documents that won't print. A while back, I narrowed the
problem down to the presence of Index entries in the documents' bodies.
Problem was, there is no Index in the document. The text that's causing
problems was copied into the document from another document, which had
proper Index entries in the body and an Index at the end of the document.
When I copied the test, I could not see the Index entries. I've tried
scanning the doc for "XE" entries, which I deleted. However, something else
is still preventing the document from printing. So, I'd very much
appreciate your help figuring out how to solve the problem and getting the
documents to print.

in word when I try to open a file I get a message saying that the.
the file is unavailable. This just started happening. It does not matter if
I am openning a file on the local machine or on the server. I have tried
creating a new file and it saves correctly so that other machines will open
it, but this machine still says that the file is unavailable.

backspace brings up explorer
2 days ago backspace stopped deleting characters and instead it brings up
internet explorer up. i had to be careful while writing this as if i
backspace on my errors i get a new page of explorer for every push of
backspace so i use delete by moving the cursor in front now. the option
Tools | Options | Edit: Typing replaces selection is ticked but its not the
control for this i think. any help on getting our backspace to delete,
rather than open i.explorer, as before. it does it in word, outlook.

Error when creating links in Work Doc
I have created a User Form and when I send the form to another user, the
links no longer work properly. It shows an error where the links were. Error
is "Error, not a valid link." I am now also getting this error on some of the
forms I created prior to sending. When I completed the forms, I tested all of
the links and they were working correctly. Could someone advise how best to

a helpful answer. I found that by turning off the Norton Antivirus scan of MS

MS Word is doing weird things.
Word 97 from Office 97, installed on XP Professional w/SP2 & security
updates.
I'm logged on to my computer as myself. I'm the only user on this
computer. When I attempt to open a MS Word document I've previously
created, I get a strange message.
"C:\...\Some Document.doc is being used by my User Name. Do you want to
make a copy?"
Some Document.Doc is not the actual document name; User Name is not my
actual user name. I substitute them here for the real names.
The document is there behind the dialog box when the message pops up.
If I click "Cancel" I can work with the document. If I click OK, it
gives me another strange message:
"Word cannot open the document.
Try one or more of the following:
*On the File menu, click Open to open the document
*Make sure the document has a .DOC extension
(C:\...\Some Docume...)"
Clicking OK at this point also lets me work with the document.
Any suggestions? I'm able to use the program, access my documents for
now, but it's annoying.

Yesterday whenever i went into word or access, spell checker would be
operating. I had a hard time making it disappear. I reset and then restarted
my comp. No help.
After many Xing out of it many times it finally didnt come up anymore. Is
there something wrong and what can i do to correct it?
If this is the wrong place to ask this question, please direct me to the
right location.
I use windows XP and Office 2000. Verizon is my dsl service.

MS Office Word 2003 - Restore Problem
When I "minimize" the captioned application, NO PROBLEM. When I click on the
minimized button to "restore" the it, the entire program disappears and I
have to restart it from the shortcut on my desktop. Does anybody know why
this is happening? How to fix it? I already did a disk restore for the

Solution to Word being slow to open documents (!)
I have finally found a solution to a problem which affects Word 97 running
on Windows 2000 Professional. It may also affect lots of other things.
Basically some people find that opening documents in Word (particularly over
a network) can take minutes, if the document is large. There are many
documented causes for this, but none of the solutions ever fixed the problem
for me. But please read on. The solution is quite amazing.
The problem can occur when you double-click a document in Windows Explorer
to open it, and is particularly bad with large documents (hundreds of
pages).
If the Folder Options setting in Windows Explorer is set to "Show hidden
files and folders" the document can take a huge amount of time to open
(several minutes), and the CPU usage while opening is low (15% to 20%). If
the folder options setting is changed to "Do not show hidden files and
folders" the document loads about 10 times faster, and the CPU usage is much
higher while it is loading. I don't know why this happens, but the solution
is to set your folder options to "Do not show hidden files and folders".
Opening the document through the File/Open menu in Word will be fast if the
document is not selected in Explorer, but just having the document selected
in Explorer will cause the open to be slow (with Show hidden files and
folders) even when opening through Word's File/Open menu.
If anyone else knows why this occurs I would love to know. I have attempted
to report this problem/solution to Microsoft, but I'm not sure if I've been
successful and I'm not prepared to spend a long time doing this.
Please bear in mind that there are other causes of Word being slow to open

MS-Word psychotic text boxes!
Howdy there, all MicroSofties. My apologies for the massive
cross-posting, but I am simply stymied.
I'm writing a document in MS-Word. It's from
MS-Office 2003 v11.5604.5606,
if that information you get from the tab named "About MS-Office"
means anything.
This document is rife with flow charts (OK, it has eight. On the other
hand, it's an 8-page document, so I imagine "rife" about suits it). In
fact, that's the main reason for this document: to display and describe
the flow charts. I use a lot of text boxes to hold labels; most have
no border lines and no fill color. Lately, say over the last several
hours, I have had text boxes behave strangely: I'll have one in one part
of a figure with [wouldn't you know] text in it. Then I'll open another
one in the same figure, different area, and begin typing in it. As I'm
typing in the new text box, the text is appearing IN BOTH BOXES!!!
Sorry for yelling there, but I don't get it.
This doesn't appear to happen first thing in a new figure, but somehow
after a while, it (MS Word? Office? CLIPPY?) gets this goofy notion that
all text must belong to all new text boxes. I'll open another text box
and yet another one, and type in one of those, and sure enough, they'll
all have all the text.
WTF??
Any comments, even rude ones, would be welcome.

When I try to open General Templates on the Task Pane, Word tells me I have
insufficient memory or just does nothing. Same thing happens when I go to

Tracking, AutoCorrect and Numbering
I'm editing a document and have Tracking turned on. When I use any of my
custom auto correct entries, Word will randomly change the numbering further
down the document and track the changes as if I'd purposely changed the
numbering. Worse, it adjusts the numbering far enough down the document that
the affected numbering is just below the bottom of the screen and not visible
until I work my way down the document.

Word not behaving like Normal
Hi there,
I have a problem with Word.
When I first open it, it says:
"Word cannot open the existing (Normal)"
I click OK and can start using it.
Then when I go to shut it down it says:
"The file Normal already exists. Do you want to replace the existing file?"
If I click YES it says:
"You cannot save while the file is in use by another process. Try saving the
file with a new name."
I have tried to save Normal with a new name but it won't let me.
If I click NO it takes me to the Templates saving window which I click
cancel.
I then try to close windows again and it says:
Changes have been made that affect the global template, Normal. Do you want
to save those changes?
If I say no - I can shut down windows.
Again, it I try to save it says "You cannot save while the file is in use by
another process. Try saving the file with a new name."
I have no idea what going on here.

troubleshoot create an envelope while in MS Word using Outlook
While in the Microsoft Word program I click on the Envelope icon, then click
on the Microsoft Outlook address book (not Outlook Express) (before I was
able to access the addresses and create envelopes while in Word) and the

Problems with Spell check
I have a 300+ page document that I need to have spell checked. For som
reason, WORD only checks certain parts of the document. I have foun
several misspelled words, but I cannot seem to get WORD to recogniz
them. I have tried selecting and then checking, I have tried to g
into the edit/replace and then to format and to language and then t
turn off spell check. I have turned it off, on, etc. There is a gra
check mark in the box before I do anything. Normally I would just g
through and edit myself but because it is such a large document, i
would take a long time. Hopefully someone can help. I believe I hav

Cannot no open word and excel documents
I tried to open a Word and Excel document today but the computer
wouldn't let me. Word says the file is not available and Excel
indicates that the virus scanner has detected a problem. I had no
problem opening these files a day or two ago. I am currently running

word shutdown when type ck
We have a fax form document that when ever someone types the letters ck (for
example the word "check") Word enounters a problem and has to shut down. In
the recovered file the word check is checyyyyy yyyyy yyyyy yyyyy yyyyy (goes
on and on).
I thought at first that it might be some conflict because we had either a
macrobutton called CheckIT or a FormCheck box. I deleted them and the
problem persists.

importing selected Access 2003 fields into a Word document
In Word 2003 when I use the database toolbar to insert a database, I choose
the table I want. I can query the data no problem, but when I limit the

TOA Marks in text are not hidden--how do I fix it?
Table of Authority marks are supposed to be hidden text, but they aren't. As
a result, the page numbers are all wrong. The TOA marks do not show up when I
print the document (which is good!), but that makes it two pages shorter and

Just to confirm, if I have run the latest windows update and it shows no
updates for Word, then the fixes in KB907417 should be on my machine -
correct?
I have never run the fix in KB907417 and on my dev machine it has version
7.10.5077.0 but my test system, which shows no pending office updates, has
7.10.3191.0. So it looks like I do have to install it.
Do we run this same update for Word 2002 and Word 2000? Or is there a
different update in their cases?
And for our customers, I assume we have to point them at this fix? Or will
it be included in the Windows update soon? Or can we include it in our
install? Does it just update this one dll?
For KB908002, this is added to the setup program. However, we use WIX (the
official Microsoft installer) for our setup. How do we add this to our setup,
and what does it do?

I get message after breakdown that there is updates but find none
Very often (to often) I have breakdown of Word.
Working with quality management I fell that I must send the report to let
you know the error. I then get the automatic reply that "there is updates" -
BUT THERE IS NONE. It is waste of my time. Though it is 19.30 I am working.
Please correct it.

orientation of envelope printing
Win XP Home, Office XP Pro, HP 990 printer. About a month ago, envelopes of
all sizes began printing 90 degrees off proper orientation. Attempts at
detection and repair have failed. Since I have read several other people

Printing borders and shading in Word 2003
Word 2003 w/HP4000N printer sometimes prints shading and borders, sometimes
not (blank). The sta tions are all set the same (Deep Freeze). Any
suggestions? They add borders to: headings or the page and shade: titles or

Word 2003 will no longer start--only shows startup screen. I have tried
locating the "Normal.dot" file, but search does not locate it. I have

Word Highlight and Replacement error
I used to be able to highlight a word or group of words and then just start
typing to replace that word/group. Now, after I highlight and start typing
the word/group just unhighlights and what I type gets amended to the
beginning of what I had originally highlighted. My roommate has the same
problem.

Header/Footer Problem
Using Word 2000. When I open a file, and click on View Header/Footer,
sometimes the header and footer open correctly for editing. But sometimes,
they open with only lines and boxes available for editing, and the rest of
the text is grayed out. If I close the file and then open it again, it often
seems to fix the problem, and the header and footer are both completely
available for editing.
Any idea what is causing this, or how to fix it?

text wraps 4 inches in word processing
I don't know what I'm doing so I'm sorry if I did it wrong. I searched
your FAQs for wordwrap. Please tell me what else to do. I nver
subscribed to a group before, Sorry if I'm breaking some rule.
I have a horrible problem. I'm using word97 and I've been very happy
with it. Just ordinary word processing, no graphics or pics. And
suddenly the right 1/2 inch is off the screen, and when I type into it,
the text jumps about 4 inches, so the word I'm typing is in the center
of the screen and I can't see the left margin by 4 inches. If I keep
typing, after a while it jumps back and I lose the right most text
again. It prints fine. I'm in the template "normal.dot" and I don't
think I've made any changes that would affect it.

Word freezes on open, and never opens
On a friend's computer, MS word 2003 freezes up when trying to start,
and never actually opens. Task manager must be employed to stop the
process.
I feel bad because he is on the west coast, I am on the east, so I
cannot just run over and troubleshoot it.
I coached him through starting with no templates (ie "winword.exe /a")
and that successfully opened the program in safe mode, but he can't open
any existing docs.
We then deleted all instances of "Normal.dot" and tried to start, and
got the exact same result, splash screen but no init of the program.
Next we used the start with no templates option (As above), selected
[help] then [detect and repair] option, let it run and still no resolution.
I even went so far as to have him uninstall and reinstall to no avail.
This is peculiar behavior to say the least. This machine is less than a
month old, and safely stashed behind a very capable firewall / server
setup, so malware is not the culprit (yes, we checked).
