With a range of text selected, applying the backspace key fails to delete its
content. Rather, it simply moves the cursor to the starting position in the
range. Similarly, selecting a range and attempting to overwrite results in
prepending each new character typed to the selected range (not overwriting
the selection). Is anyone aware of a way of returning Word to its original
state? Thanks in advance,
Charles

Try Tools-->Options, Edit tab and check "typing replaces selection".
