OCR to Word conversion is unreadable.
When I scan a document to send to Word for fax, the OCR is performed just
before the scanned document is sent to Word. The text(and signatures) are
converted to unreadable characters and sent through the fax that way. It
produces an unreadable (and unuseable)fax. Tag: How do I activate infrared on my PC Tag: 101456

Redacting with Confidence: How to Safely Publish Sanitized Reports Converted From Word to PDF
NSA: REDACTING WITH CONFIDENCE
The National Security Agency has issued new guidance to assist
officials in redacting (censoring) documents in Microsoft Word format
and producing unclassified Adobe Portable Document (PDF) files without
inadvertently disclosing sensitive information. "MS Word is used
throughout the DoD and the Intelligence Community (IC) for preparing
documents, reports, notes, and other formal and informal materials.
PDF is often used as the format for downgraded or sanitized documents."
"There are a number of pitfalls for the person attempting to sanitize a
Word document for release." For example, "As numerous people have
learned to their chagrin,
merely converting an MS Word document to PDF does not remove all
[sensitive] metadata automatically." "This paper describes the issue,
and gives a step-by-step description of how to do it with confidence
that inappropriate material will not be released." See "Redacting with
Confidence: How to Safely Publish Sanitized Reports Converted From Word
to PDF," National Security Agency, December 13, 2005:

Officials advised by NSA on editing
By Shaun Waterman
UNITED PRESS INTERNATIONAL
Published January 24, 2006
The National Security Agency has issued technical guidelines to U.S.
officials on redacting or editing sensitive documents for release after
a series of incidents in which so-called metadata stored in electronic
formats such as Microsoft Word or Adobe PDF files were exposed
accidentally.
Both types of files are "complex, sophisticated computer data
formats," according to the guidance document produced by the NSA's
Information Assurance Directorate, which is responsible for the
integrity of U.S. government computer networks.
The document, called "Redacting with confidence: How to safely
publish sanitized reports converted from Word to PDF," says these files
can "contain many kinds of information, such as text, graphics, tables,
images, [and] meta-data."
Metadata is information associated with the file, like a note of
the author and the date the file was created.
This "complexity makes [documents in these and other formats]
potential vehicles for exposing information unintentionally, especially
when downgrading or sanitizing classified materials," the NSA says.
Although the document -- dated last month and posted on the Web
site of the Federation of American Scientists last week -- provides no
examples, there were at least two occasions last year when such
unintentional exposure of official U.S. documents occurred.
Reporters checking the metadata for the 35-page "National Strategy
for Victory in Iraq" that President Bush presented in November found
its author to be a National Security Council adviser named Peter
Feaver.
Another kind of metadata is the so-called "undo stack," a list of
all editing changes made in the file that are saved by the program so
that they can be reversed using the "undo" function.
On April 30, U.S.-led coalition forces in Baghdad posted on the Web
a redacted version of their report regarding the fatal shooting of
Italian special agent Nicola Calipari at a checkpoint on the city's
notorious airport road.
Military officials redacted key information about checkpoint
procedures and events on the night in question from the report before
posting it on the Web. But a few clicks of the mouse was all it took to
restore the redacted parts.
"The key concept for understanding the issues that lead to the
inadvertent exposure is that information hidden or covered in a
computer document can almost always be recovered," the NSA says.
The officers who prepared the Calipari report apparently thought
that when a document was converted to a PDF format, the "undo stack"
disappeared.
"It was believed that once a document was converted to a PDF, it
would not be able to be reversed [to] allow the information to be
viewed," Army Lt. Col. Steven Boylan, who led the post-mortem into the
accidental release, told Government Computer News last year.
According to the NSA document, "numerous people have learned to
their chagrin, merely converting a Microsoft Word document to PDF does
not remove all metadata automatically." Tag: How do I activate infrared on my PC Tag: 101443
Why do grapics go blank when I paste or insert them into Word?

Blank Box entitled Microsoft Word ...? Never seen this before...
Hello,
I am not sure if this is an error or not, but when I click on a specific
Word file, a box comes up entitled Microsoft Word with an OK and Cancel
button at the top and a blank text box you can type in on the bottom (fairly
small box). And thats it.... nothing on the window hinting what it is. (you
can see Word running in the background without a document open yet).
If you click OK, and don't type anything in, it will open the document as
normal and you can proceed. If you click cancel, same behavior. If you type
something in the blank box and click OK, same behavior.
Any clue to what this is? I thought it was a protection thing, but I don't
see Word tracking my changes.
Thank you all for reading this. I hope someone can shed some light on this.

Installation problem and strange operation
I installed Office 2000 Pro and went through all of the upgrades. The OS is
Windows 2000 Pro fully updated.
During the install and upgrade I got an error message (didn't write it down)
that said that Windows was protecting some file that the install was trying
to modify. I would acknowledge and the install/upgrade would proceed.
Everything seemed OK.
I started Word 2000 and tried to modify the tool bars by unclicking "all
bars share one line". Clicking on the check box dosen't remove the check.
With the modify window up, the toolbars are on separate lines. As soon as
you close it, they go back to one line.
Are the installation error messagend the problem related. I don't know what
other operation problems I will have.
I tried to re-upgrade in order to get the error message but it tells me that
everything is up to date.
Any ideas what to do?
Thanks

Anti virus conflict with MS Word
We have Word 2002 with Norton antivirus and firewall active.
Opening MS Word is very slow 75 to 90 seconds. Closing takes about
the same time.
Once the Word screen comes up an hour glass appears on the screen
for about 60 seconds. Also during the slow start up the message
"Requesting virus scan" appears at the bottom of the screen. This
seems to be the real hold up.
Once MS Word is up, loading a file is reasonably quick but the
"Requesting virus scan" appears. It seems that a virus scan of the entire

Scrolling in document with numerous sections does "repeat" section
Dear All,
I am using Office 2003 on WinXP with latest patches and service packs.
(German versions of OS and Office)
When writing a document and working with sections, which is really necessary
sometimes, I have to problem that scrolling does not work at some time. When
scrolling up (or down, depends on the "mood" of Word) some sections will
always repeat and I cannot scroll down to the next / up to the previous
section.
Unfortunately, I cannot tell you how many sections, pictures, text, whatever
is required to let Word have this behaviour. But once it start to happen, it
will always happen, at random sections.
Is there any patch, registry tweak or whatever to solve this annoying bug?
I searched at google and in the news boards but I feel that I am the only
one experience this problem, and of course all people that open such
"infected" document after they received from me. Someone told that you must
not include pictures of any other format than WMF, but unfortunately this
behavior occurs even there are no pictures in the document at all (at least
non that I would know of).
