Word 2003 spell checker doesn't popup suggestions

I am running Word 2003 on Windows XP Prof. I do not 'check spelling as you type' and I have 'always suggest corrections' selected. After entering a few paragraphs I ask it to check spelling. It will highlight the first mispelled word, but there is no popup box showing suggested corrections. How do I get Word 2003 to show suggested correct spellings?

Spelling suggestions are based on how closely the word not recognized
by spell check matches another word. (actually there's a little more
to it than that but Mike Williams is the expert on this and can
explain it better. :-) )

The bottom line is, the misspelled word needs to be close to the
correct spelling for suggestions to be listed.

Thanks but that is not what is happening. If I type 'missspelled' in Excel 2003 then it pops up a box and overs the correct word 'misspelled'. In Word 2003 it simply highlights the bad word without a popup. I definitely have a problem with Word 2003.

Do you happen to use Norton AV?

If so then the Spelling dialog box may be appearing behind the Word
application window. Try running spell-check again but minimize Word
and any other windows to see if this is the case.

Open Norton AV and select Options. In the Miscellaneous section turn
off "Enable Office Plug-in".

I tried your suggestion (thanks), it doesn't appear to be the problem. I am running an older version of NAV (7.0 Corporate, which has a never-ending license, updated with WindowsXP patch). It does not appear to have Office Plug-ins. Also, I tried to see if the popup box was behind the Word window, but it is not there when I iconize the window, and it still does not appear if I do the spell check with the Word window off the screen. Hmmm... I will try one more thing here

Found it! The popup is being displayed on the secondary monitor (an HDTV, infrequently used with the computer). I am using an nVidia GeForce4 MX 440 video adapter. Other programs send their popups to the primary monitor (like Excel 2003, for instance). I am searching through the video settings to see if there is something causing this - I'll post if I find a solution, please advise if you know a setting in Word or the video properties which affects this.

Resolved! I was able to drag the spelling popup from the secondary monitor to the primary monitor and Word seems to remember where it was closed last. Now it comes up correctly. Funny that Word 2003 seemed to default to putting that window on the secondary monitor after a fresh installation (I had installed WindowsXP & Office 2003 on a freshly formatted disk). I will test further after a reboot and only update if there are further problems.

Thank you for your help. Your hint of "the Spelling dialog box may be appearing behind the Word application window" was the clue that got me looking for it in unusual places. :)
