    - Save As menu instantly reloads (Word 2007) Hi everyone, Maybe there's a reasonable explanation but this has me stumped - basically, when I go to save a document for the first time in Word 2007, after clicking 'save' the Save As menu instantly reloads with a number beside the file name (example: a file saved initially as 'test' reappears as 'test1').     - Drop down menu box outline appears, but no text. When I click on file, insert, etc. in the menu bar the outline of the box will appear as if the menu has opened, but I can see no text in the box and I am unable to click on anything in the box. This happens in Excel and Word. I tried to down Service Pack 3, but it says there is error and it can't download to my computer. Any ideas? I'm not too savvy with computers.     - Word Keeps Closing When I have multiple docs open in Word, save them, and then close them by using the "X" in the corner (NOT THE X ON TOP THAT CLOSES WORD, BUT THE LITTLE X UNDERNEATH), the whole program closes. I have done this a number of times and am absolutely sure I am not hitting the "X" that closes Word, but am hitting the smaller "X" underneath that should just close the document.     - Word 2000 won't open files When the user tries to open a file, the file open dialog box lists some of the files in the My Documents directory and then Word freezes and must be closed using the "End now" button. I have tried repairing Word and also deleting it and reinstalling. No change. Document files can be opened from explorer by clicking on the file and once opened the file can be changed and saved but no files can be opened from inside Word.     - Font size Somehow my font size is not adjusted ... when I set it on 8 it is about a 16 ... that is the smallest I can make it ...     - "Microsoft Word has encountered a problem and need to close..." As of yesterday, whenever I open Microsoft Word, I get a message that announces that the aplication "has encountered a problem and needs to close." I am given the option to recover my work and restart Word. However, once Word restarts, this cycle happens again. After one or two attempts to restart Word, I am given the option to open it in Safe Mode. If I accept that option, it does work; Word opens in Safe Mode. However, what to do from there. This is Office 2003 that I am dealing with and I have already done two things... Insert the CD and "Repair Office," and uninstall Office completely, then reinstall it. The later part worked for a single night, then came back. Here is my suspicion... I have noticed the pattern of this happening AFTER I install the latest Microsoft Updates not on my computer - SP3 and Outlook 2003 Junk Email Filter. After I restart, I don't right away go to use Word, but the problem seems to come up once I do. I will attempt to uninstall those updates and see if something happens. If tat doesn't work, I'll uninstall and then reinstall Office and not update the computer to see if that does anything.     - Control keyboard shortcuts stopped working I'm on Mac OS X 10.4.8 running Word 2004. My Control key shortcuts (Control + whatever) have stopped working and I don't know where the problem is. I reloaded my Normal template with all my macros and checked that the shortcuts are listed as current in the Customize Keyboard dialog, but when I try to use a Control shortcut nothing happens. I also tried to re-enter my Control key shortcuts in the "Press new shortcut key" box, but I'm unable to enter them at all -- if I try to type "Control + c", the box just stays empty. Please tell me this is a simple fix. :) I use my keyboard shortcuts constantly. The other shortcuts are working fine, just not any that involve the Control key. Thanks in advance for any help.     - Word 2007 Stops Working Message This doesn't happen all the time, when I go to open a Word document I get an error message that states Word is not working properly and a solution is being searched for and then shuts down. I'll go an open up Excel and then minimize it and try Word again and sometimes ti will open properly and sometimes it won't.     - word 2007 bcm 2007 mail merge i have several users that is using word 2007 to try and create mailing labels from bcm contacts. in word 2007, they would choose mailings tab and start mail merge. select labels and choose the label size. when they click on "select recipients", word just shuts down and disappears. no error message, nothing. i have tried reinstalling office 2007, installing all the office updates and still the same problem. i have other users that the mail merge is working fine. any suggestions?     - Word 2003 has messed up my system Hi I have Word 97 installed on my system. Recently, I needed to install Office 2003 as well, as I received some docs that were not compatible with Word 97. I installed Word 2003 and told the installer I wanted to keep my old installation as well. Unfortunately, Word 2003 has now been made the default programme for opening all .doc files, and for some reason I cannot change it back again. (Right-click the file type and select open with, always opens with word 2003 even if I select the old programme. This is in Windows XP Home.) Any ideas for how to tame this?     - Avoiding corrupt files by saving as .rtf or .xml ? Every day or so we have damaged Word files. We know how to repair them with "Open and Repair" but wish we could avoid that. We have tried many things (disable fast saving, etc) with no success. So I thought about storing the files in .rtf ou .xml format instead of .doc (we are using Word 2003). Do you think this may be a good idea? Is "corruption" only limited to .doc files or can it happen just as often with "text" formats like rtf or xml?     - The author of a document is reverting to a previous author I have a word document that has had several versions by different writers over a period of time. Also persons would have made electronic contributions to the document and returned it with their changes. What I have noticed is that the document is now showing up with the author field changed. I am puzzled because the last version of the document would have had myself as the author and no one is claiming to have manually changed the author field under properties. I need help confirming if their is a feature/bug in the system that would inadvertently change the author field if someone else uses the document on their system.     - Word docs fail to print last several lines of first page My printer (HP L7780) works fine with other applications (ie. Explorer, pdfs). When I try to print word documents, 75% of the time the first page only partially prints. It stops printing about 1.5" from the bottom of my text - wherever that might be. Frequently, the page is cut off in the middle of a line with only the top half of the letters having been printed. If there is a footer on the page, it will not be printed either. The most frustrating thing, is that occasionally it works correctly. The same doc will fail to print properly as described above, and then with no changes but for printing it again, it will be ok. The documents look perfect in print preview, but then print with the bottom of the page missing. I would appreciate any help regarding this extremely frustrating issue.     - frames don't fit pictures I am working on a large document with many pictures. On just a few of them, the frame won't fit the picture. It seems always to be too far out on the left side.     - changed my text to webdings, saved it, but cannot change it back I created a text in greek (in word 2003) in a public pc in an internet cafe. I changed it from Arial to webdings and saved it.     - Word 2003 Repair corrupt docs per Macro: Save doesn't work I'm trying to repair a folder full of corrupt documents by using "open and repair" funktion in my procedure. This works well, but saving the repaired document does not save the repairs, although the document seems to be changed in file system.     - Printer works from every other Microsoft product except for Word Trying to print to my network printer freezes Microsoft Word 2007 with no error message and no time out. You have to give it the three finger solute to get back on your feet. I have reproduced this problem with two other computers, both with fresh WIN XP PRO SP2 installs. The printer is connected via USB through my wireless router. Like I said, I can print fine from any other program including Test Print.     - Problem after transfering custom.dic file to laptop. I have used Word 2000 for several years and have added many terms to the custom dictionary. I recently bought a laptop computer, and transfered the Custom.dic file from my desktop computer. (I also transfered normal.dot, and the files for autocorrect.) However, the spellchecker stops on words that I KNOW I have added, and they are in the dictionary on my desktop computer. I was going to just copy and paste the text file from one computer to the other, but when I open the custom.dic file on my desktop, the only words I see are ones added recently, so there is not much to cut and paste. I have checked to make sure there are not multiple dictionaries. I added a nonsense word to the desktop dictionary and then transfered the file again to the laptop, and the nonsense word is indeed there, so I know it is reading the correct file.     - Insufficient Memory VBE We have an application that opens Word with the Local System account and then opens the visual basic editor to merge a pdf and doc file to form a new document. When the app request opens Word and then VBE the Insufficient Memory error box opens. When we open Word under a local admin account it opens normally with VBE responding as well. We have 7 servers running this way and only 2 have the error. We have run regmon and filemon and found nothing that makes a difference.     - Help with encryption key in Word 2007 I have had 2 PC's running XP Pro prior to the current Vista Business Nightmare one. On each, I created Word Docs, some which were saved to a networked location (no domain). Others were saved on the local hard drive of each computer. When the hard drive failed on the Vista Nightmare PC, and I recovered the files, they are now mostly unreadable. I am asked what type of encoding I wish to use, with no choice bringing up anything but gobbledygook (I had to look up the spelling on that one!).     - Word Wont Read Mouse Hello to all, I was using word and it was working perfectly, untill about 3-4 weeks ago. At first when I double clicked on a file it wouldn't open the file. It would just open Word and I would have to open the file through file.. open. Now, in addition to that problem, Word does not allow me to select test or move the cursor with my mours. The program reads the mouse, because it allows me to select the shortcuts from the meny and it allows me to open and close the document with the mouse, but for some reason it will not allow me to move the cursor or select text with the mouse.     - Mail Merge Record Display Error I use MS Word 2003 Mail Merge with an Excel List of about 400 entries. The Record(Go To Record) on the Mail Merge Toolbar does not display the correct record #(truncates least significant digit over 100). Mail Merge correctly merges all records, and I can pull up any record in the list, but the Record number truncates. I have increased the size of the Record # on the Mail Merge Toolbar, but records over 99 truncate the LSD. I have been using this mail merge document for years, this recently started happening.     - Word 2007 shuts down when Outlook 2007 is running OS: Vista Home Premium APP: Office Professional Suite 2007 When Outlook is already running, then when I try to start Word (either by opening a new doc or by starting Word from the start list), Word stops responding. The dialog box then offers one option, to close. Word works fine if Outlook is not running. IF I close Outlook, then wait until the HD light stops, Word works fine.     - Keyboard Shortcuts When in Word 2003 and I press Control+Home to go to the top of the document, I get the â??Go Toâ?? tab in the Find and Replace Window instead. (This is the same keyboard shortcut as Control+G). I then have to enter 1 in the page number field and press enter to get to the top of the document.     - Most fonts in font preview list are blacked out I'm using Word 2002. Recently, the majority of fonts in my font list dropdown, when my customization is set to "List font names in their font" appear either completely blacked out (a solid black bar) or black with scratchy white lines. There appears to be no pattern as to which fonts are shown this way. My windows/font folder appears to be in good shape, having lost none of its menu items.     - denied access and I am the administrator I hope someone out there can help me! I am working on a manuscript and recieved via email and edited version with tracked changes. I was working on the paper yesterday and saving diligently (although I didn't back it up on a separate disk). we had a brown out but I was able to recover the document and continue working on it. This morning I opened up the main folder I use to store it and related files in and decided to do some organizing. I created a subfolder and placed the document in it. From that point on I was unable to open the file. I get a message stating that I am denied access to the file. I can however access files I placed in other subfolders created moments before. so far I have checked the properties on the document and the folder. The folder is read only but when I go to change it to apply to the folder I am denied access. I have rebooted in safe mode and attempted to access the file from the other user accounts with no luck. I cannot open it through word and the document is not on the most recently opened list. I would really like to gain access to the file considering the amount of work I put into it yesterday. I am about to give birth too and am running up against an unpredicable time table therefore starting over is really not an option.     - Documents open as read-only I have a user with a Vista / Office 2007 combination on a desktop PC. Everything is working well except for a very strange problem when opening Word documents on shared network drives (its an SBS 2003 server). The documents will randomly open as read-only with absolutely no warning. If a document opens as read-only, it can be closed and opened again and you may get full write access. Close it, open it again, and it may or may not be read-only. It's completely random. The only way you can tell it's read only is the (Read Only) next to the document name at the top of the window. This behaviour is only exhibited when double-clicking on the file from Windows Explorer. If Word is opened first and the document selected using the Open menu, the document is fine every single time. Ditto when opening documents on the local computer. These particular documents are not used by people on other computers. But if they try to open them, they don't have the problem. Any user that logs into the computer has the same issue. It's not a file permission issue. I've reinstalled Office to no effect. I've updated with all Windows/Office 2007 patches. I've recreated the normal.dotx file. I've searched all over the place and can't find anybody who has experienced this problem. Any suggestions? I have 3 other identical PC's onsite, and they don't exhibit the problem - even with the above user logged on. Tag: Word 2007 - slow opening Tag: 115913

I seem to recall having had this problem with an earlier version of
Office, but it appears to have returned with Office 2007.

Opening the programme seems to take forever, certainly in excess of ten
seconds from clicking the desktop icon.

Is there a known cure, since I cannot recall what I did last time.

Thanks Terry. Some of the solutions apply to earlier versions of Word,
but I did find that for some unknown reason I had 8 copies of the
'Normal.dot' file. Deleted 7 of these and opening now much faster - 2
seconds or thereabouts.
