 - saving in microsoftword 98 (macintosh) I have always saved documents in Word, but recently I saved a document and now I am receiving the message "Word unable to open document." I can access other documents, just not this one. Can someone help? I am told by Microsoft that this program is obsolete and I cannot get tech help from them, paid or otherwise.  - Unable to obtain Word document My operating system is Windows 95. Word version is Word 2000. Word always worked fine. Recently, I am unable to open any Word document. The following message appears when I run ScanDisk (assuming this is the cause of the problem). The choices given are: delete the file, ignore the error or have it put into a new folder. I picked the last option but it appears specific action is required to do this: C:\WINDOWS\APPLIC~1\MACROM~1\FLASHP~1 \MACROM~1.COM\SUPPORT\FLASHP~1 folder cannot be opened in MS-DOS mode because its MS-DOS name, including the names of any folder sit is in, is longer than 66 characters.  - User files I've had the harrowing experience of having to format my hd and reinstall everything. I have Office 97 and Word 2002 installed (partitioned hard drive) and the ~$mytemplateinstartup.dot user files don't show up. I have show all files selected, they are all checked in templates and add-ins. The toolbars are there. I made a minor change to a toolbar and it asked me if I wanted to save the changes to the template and instead of saving them it brought up the template folder and I would have had to save it over the template file.  - Word 2002 startup I am running Windows XP Home. I had to reinstall it. now my Word 2002 shows two messages so fast that I cannot read them when it starts up and it takes several seconds before it loads. I would like to find out what these messages say, but I cannot figure out how to do it. Does Word store these messages in a text file somewhere, like a log file? Does anyone have any suggestions?  - Hangs when opening docs Just a little background, when I first installed Word 97 the computer would hang when I was opening or searching for a file unless I was online.(by hang I mean it wasn't locked up, but took an awfull long time for the icons to show up).  - Can't Insert chart into Office 2003 I'm trying to add a Microsoft Graph Chart object in Word 2003, and it actually lets me add it and enter data into the table. But if I exit from editing the chart, then try to edit it again - I get a message "Word cannot open the document: user does not have access priviledge". Any body know what this means?  - Odd Behavior Changing Fonts My wife is working on a paper for school and has run into an odd behavior in Word (part of Office XP suite). I have checked that she has all of the service packs and updates installed for both office and windows. When she selects a certain section of text in the document the font name and point size boxes in the toolbar goes blank as it would if more than one type of font was selected. However when she uses the pull down menu to apply a particular font and point size the font name and size boxes still remain blank.  - Macros Disabled Recently (aagh!) I was 'hacked'. In doing corrective action, I updated Microsoft Office, especially for Word which was now running eratically. Now when I open/close Word, I get a dialog window (Virtual Basic) that states the Macros in this project are disabled. The help function tells me to reopen the application with macros enabled. How? I have uninstalled/reinstalled Word and even had MS Office to do a self-repair, all in vain. My Norton system (which I run weekly) tells me I am virus-free, and Adware keeps the spyware out.  - Development of Word 6/7/8/9 Hi, I'm preparing some notes for my students on software maintenance and am making some comments on adding new features versus re-writing the whole package. I'd appreciate it if someone can read over what is below (constructed from my own patchy memory of reviews) and point out any errors. Thanks. -- To upgrade or overhaul? With any piece of software that faces maintenance over a long period of time, there can be so many changes applied to the original that it may become progressively more difficult to maintain. Imagine a building that has many extensions added to it, leading to a maze of corridors that are difficult to navigate and a series of wiring and plumbing modifications that lead to lots of 'tracking' along walls and ceilings. Far from being useful and efficient, many problems have been introduced. Because the building has become inefficient and ugly, it may be cost-effective to knock it down and do everything that is wanted nowadays more efficiently. The same is true of software. As more and more features are added and changes made to the original design, developers may eventually re-write the system to avoid having a huge system full of procedures that might not even be used any more. For example, Microsoft Word is now in version 11 (marketed as Word 2003). However very little, if anything, of the original program remains. In the mid 1990s, Word version 6 became very popular among users of MS Windows 3. This was a GUI-extension to the DOS operating system. Word 7 was released in 1995 to coincide with Windows 95, the full-GUI replacement for DOS. Word 7 (aka Word 95) was an adaptive change to Word 6. The adaption was to make it run properly on the new operating system. Users noticed few major changes. Word 8 (or, Word 97) was a complete re-write. Because Word 6/7 had been through a lengthy maintenance phase including several service packs, it was known that adding major new features to it could introduce serious problems. Also, as Word 7 (for Windows 95) was an update of Word 6 (for Windows 3) there were some procedures remaining that were probably not used in the Windows 95 version. These were not removed, however just in case of the knock-on consequences. As a result, Word 8 (97) was the result of a new design in order to streamline the product. In a similar way, Word 9/2000 was an adaptive improvement to Word 8 and Word 10 (marketed as XP) was a re-write.  - Word and copy/pasting Every time I copy text from another program - usually from an internet site or adobe document - and then paste it into Word, Word crashes. Of course it restores the document but only after I close Word and restart the application again. Is this error due to bad software?? How can I fix it so I don't have to deal with this problem??  - Help: WORD XP applies formatting to WHOLE document (not just selected paragraph) Hi, I use MS Word XP both on a XP Pro and Win2000 PCs (2 separate computers at my work). Both Wors and the OS support Hebrew besides US English. Both these two WORD installations suffer from the following problem: When I select a line or paragraph and modify it's formatting (e.g., Bold, Italic, Underline, centered, font size etc.) WORD applies the format change to the whole document. Pressing CTRL-Z immediately afterwards achieves the desired result - returning the formatting of the whole document, except for the selected line/paragraph, to its former formatting.  - Fatal Execution Engine Error We have downloaded the Microsoft Works Suite 2003 with the disks that came with our computer. They worked for a couple of days and now it is showing us an error. The error reads: Fatal Execution Engine Error, This patch package could not be opened. Verify that the patch package exists and that you can access it, or contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer patch package. I cannot uninstall Microsoft Word without an error message also. I have unistalled everything on the computer that was downloaded by those CD's and reinstalled them and nothing works.
