Word 2002 (XP) locks when I create a new doc

I just installed Office 2002 (XP) under Windows 2000 Pro.
I previously had Office 97 installed and have used it for
a few years with few problems.

Now whenever I open a document or create a new document,
Word freezes after I type one character. Sometimes it will
then unfreeze and allow me to type again, but when I
hit "Enter" it freezes again.

Any ideas?
