    - automatically copies file in different code I have been using Word for a long time and never had this problem. Before I begin, I want to say that I have run a virus scan on Word and the files that I will mention. I found no viruses or threats so this problem is application based. And this problem just started recently I will open up a file and Word automatically makes a copy of this file but it is an inaccessible file. What I mean is, yeah, I can open this copy but I can't read it because the coding is all wrong. I usually delete it. It looks like this: ~$filename. When I open this file it will give me a window that says File Conversion. And then it asks me to select a specific coding for it. No matter what I choose it doesn't work. I still cannot read that file. When I checked on this file's properties it says it is a hidden file, which is odd seeing how the file it is copied from is not hidden. But this is not what bothers me, because I still have my original file and nothing bad has happened to that. But my question is how can I keep Word from automatically copying the files I open?     - Word 2003 Major Memory Leak - Causes Fault and Document Loss I have a Word 2003 document that is about 6.1MB and consists of text, images, and tables. When Word starts up with this file, the image is about 22MB. Each time I save the document, it consumes another 4-5MB of memory, regardless of the change. I tried things as simple as adding or deleting a semicolon, and still, Word keeps grabbing more memory. This is problematic as earlier today, I had been editing the same file, saving every 3-4 changes, for over 24 hours. Word suddenly could not save any more. When I looked at the task manager, it was consuming almost 1GB (yes, gigabyte!) of memory. To make matters worse, since it couldn't save the document, it lost all the change made in the editing session (it blew away the last image from disk), regardless of whether I had saved them or not, and when I closed Word, it destroyed the recovery file.     - Erro 429: ActiveX can't create object I'm trying to automate a mailmerge, similar to KB828550. I'm using Windows XP (SP2), Office 2003 (SP1), VB6.0 (SP6), have WindowsScript 5.6 installed, and have verified that the Word.Application key in the registry is correct and that the Normal.dot template is, well, "normal". The program (this part is copied from KB828550) starts out with Dim oApp as Word.Application oApp = CreateObkect("Word.Application") ... The first problem is the Dim statement, which hangs. Changing the statement to just Dim oApp lets execution go on to the next statement which, however, causes Error 429: ActiveX component can't create object. What's going on here, and how can I fix it?     - Lost My Toolbars I am running Word 2000 (from Office 2000 Pro) under Windows XP. The program had been working fine for months and then I suddenly lost all of my toolbars. Word still opens fine and allows to do whatever I want, just as long as I don't need a toolbar (which is not a lot!). I tried reinstalling all of office and also just using the ulitity to fix Word, but that didn't help.     - file change from write-read to read only for no reason... Only recently when I pull up one particular file, it notifies me that it is read only. When I enter it in that mode, I can make no changes to the file. I have used this same file for 2 years without this interruption. Why now?     - ToC loses formatting frequently Using Word 2000 on Windows 2000. My ToC loses its formatting unpredictably (and somewhat frequently). I've deleted the ToC and re-inserted it (resetting the formatting), but that doesn't help. I can't tell when the ToC will reformat; there is no real pattern to it. For example, I might open/close/open the document and the ToC will be fine; other times, I might open/close/open the doc again and the ToC will have lost its formatting. ??     - Wanted: Word Hyperlinks to Mapped Drive, NOT to UNC WinWord V-9 (same in V-11 I believe): When I insert a Hyperlink into a document pointing to a file on our network server, say, F:\SomeDir\Some.doc, WinWord inserts a hyperlink of the form \\server\share\SomeDir\Some.doc Instead, I need it to be of the form file://F:\SomeDir\Some.doc; note that Outlook used as an HTML editor -and not WinWord- will allow that form. Some of our users insist of using WinWord as their Outlook editor, and the hyperlinks they create are useless to us - we need them to point to a mapped network drive, just exactly as we enter them, without any alteration by WinWord.     - Autoformat maybe I have turned off every option I can find for automatic things in Word 2002. I use ShortHand, and also do lots of copy+paste from other documents. I never add any hanging indents, and there are none in the documents that I paste from, but about half the time, the paragraphs take on the hanging indent.     - MS Word 97 - File Problem Let me start by saying I use XP Home and recently installed the Service Pack 2. I also tried a different virus program (AV Force), which I since removed, in case it was causing any issue with my system. Anyway, I will now let everyone know my problem. Recently, I was using a Word Document file which locked up on me and forced me to close it. When attempting to access the file again (to recover it), it tries to do so with a .wbk file. In the past, the recovered documents were .doc files (I think). I have also received the following error message: "Microsoft Word for WindowsÂ® 97 application file has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." I shut down the computer and tried to access the file again still have the same issue. I tried opening other documents and had no problem. I even accessed the previous version of this file, which is only slightly smaller, and it works fine. What needs to be done? If necessary, I can scrap this file and add to my earlier saved version. I would hate to have to do that, as I would like to try to repair or recover this document. Perhaps it is corrupt in someway. I hope it is not virus related.     - Word 2002 only allows new Docs to be one page When I open a new Doc, it will only be one page in length. Nothing I can do will make Word allow more than one page. Scenario Overview: We are upgrading our Word automation application from Word 97 to Word 2003 and are finding several inconsistencies in behavior. The topic of this post is regarding the application of a paragraph style to a paragraph that also contains some text that has a character style applied (hidden text). Below is a sample that demonstrates the issues we are seeing regarding the use of paragraph styles and how it affects our use of the hidden-text style. Scenario Detail: 1. Select Tools | Options | View and uncheck hidden text under formatting marks. 2. Set up two paragraph styles (characteristics are not important) and a character style based on the underlying properties of the paragraph and has an effect of 'hidden'. 3. Apply the first paragraph style to the half the document and the second paragraph style to the remaining text. 4. Then apply the character style (hidden) to selected text within either of the first two styles. Be sure to select some text that is at the beginning of the paragraph. (Although it is not necessary to cause this problem, that is the way we use it the majority of the time.) 5. Next select the text that has a paragraph style applied but also contains text that has the character style(hidden text), then apply the other paragraph style to this selected text. This can be done by many methods with varying results. Most of the time the text with character style (hidden) becomes visible. The ways that we have attempted are: a. Select text by left clicking with the mouse and dragging to the end, then selecting the new style from the drop down list on the formatting toolbar. b. Using the mouse and moving to the far left edge to get the right-upward pointing arrow to select one or multiple lines of text and then applying the new style from the drop down list on the formatting toolbar. c.     - links move when I create a PDF Hi I was wondering if anyone can help me. I have a 500 page document in Word that contains lots of links. When I create a PDF (using the PDF icon in word) all the links move about an inch to the left of where they are supposed to be. I know I can move them back manually but there are soooo many of them.     - print preview and spacing When I use Word and normal line spacing the on screeen format looks OK but if I then click on print preview the spacing changes and large gaps appear. Sometimes between lines and sometimes ONLY between paragraphs. These large gaps equate to several lines and cannot be remedied.     - Unnecessary nsteps in opening Word 2002 Wheneveer I open Word, I first get the Macro option choice followed by a File Conversion Dialog Box~~STbRun9.dot followed by the error message " Word cannot open this document template " After getting through these road blocks I have no difficulty in the program. The " Remove Button in the Template Add-in" Box will not respond. I have gone through the steps recommended in the use of the Trouble Shooting Utility.     - doc mysteriously converted to Wingdings I have just experienced a worrisome Word error, and would love some guidance. (I'm running Word 2002 (10.5815.4219) SP2.) A couple hours ago I opened a large Word file which I've been working on for months now, and opened hundreds of times in the pastwithout error. To my considerable surprise, I found that the body font of the document had been converted to Wingdings, while the headers, bullets etc remained in their familiar Courier New, Times New Roman and Helvetica. (I *believe* the body font was originally Georgia, but am not certain of this.) Also, another section in a table had been mysteriously converted to Symbol ( Greek letters). My surprise turned to shock when I changed the font via the Style Manager, from Wingdings to Times New Roman. Now the entire body of the document was square boxes, with only footnote reference numbers left unscathed. Highlighting this boxed text and hitting Ctrl+Spacebar made no difference. I also noticed that when I highlighted the Wingdings text, the highlight would not behave as usual and highlight word by word; rather, it could only highlight whole paragraphs at a time. Word was clearly acting very sluggish, too, and it took a long time for the cursor/prompt to move around. After a bit of fiddling, I noticed that my clipboard manager, ClipCache, was able to convert the wingdings back into comprehensible letters, by clipping a piece of the text and hitting either "MIME nn codes to ASCII" or "MIME =nn codes to ASCII" buttons. However, all footnotes were lost. I tried saving the doc in a variety of alternative formats, and noticed the following oddity. When trying to save in Word 6.0 format, I got a dialog box warning me that "Saving as word 6.0, Some of the features in this document aren't supportd by Word 6.0/95". Strangely, further down in this box botht he "Summary" of the features and the "Number of Times" were both given in Wingdings, not comprehensible text, as if an "internal font" of Word (forgive my ignorance) had been somehow changed to Wingdings. After rummaging around on the Knowledge Base, I found "Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - 290978", which covers the following problem "WD 2002: Symbol Characters Are Changed to Box Characters." There was a macro attached, and I ran it, first on a sample block of Wingdings, then on the whole doc. It succeeded in restoring the Wingdings to Times New Roman, and preserving the footnotes, but formatting is a mess -- quotation marks both single and double are turned into little boxes, etc. This is by no means a fixed document. Other data points/clues: I have installed only one new program recently, a disk- indexing program called X1. It installed and runs normally, as far as I can see. I said I'd opened this doc many times w/o error, but this is not quite true. 2-3 times I noticed that one of the fonts had changed to Symbol (Greek), or that the bullet symbol had gone to a square box. This was easily fixed via the Style Manager. It was possible to convert some, but not all, of the Greek text by highlighting it and hitting Ctrl+spacebar. So my URGENT questions: 1) What on earth happened? 2) How do I fix the existing document without the elaborate, and in some cases destructive, use of the MS macro? 3) And perhaps more importantly: How do I keep it from happening again???     - Word2003 Crashes When Not On Network I installed Office 2003 on my Dell Laptop. When I am connected to my wireless network, Word 2003 works fine. When I am not on the network, Word 2003 core dumps about 4 seconds after launching it whether I am typing or not doing anything.     - MS Office SR 1 Word 2000 Have just installed this version of Office 2000 on a P4 Toshiba laptop running their version of Windows XP, after uninstalling Office 2000 Professional. Word seems to run OK, except when you click on "Format" on the standard toolbar,and then "Font", or click directly on the Fonts key on the Formatting toolbar. Then the "Fonts" dialogue box either comes up after a long delay (rarely), or most often, Word simply stops responding altogether.     - Word places more and more program buttons on toolbar each time sta Each time I start up the Word 2000 program another button is placed on the toolbar for the easy photo launch pad program. This eventually seems to eat up my memory and my computer freezes up. How do I stop that program short cut or what ever it is from appearing. Thanks for any help you can provide.     - very strange icon with copy-paste Office XP regularly updated, Windows XP Pro regularly updated-SP2..... Last drivers for Video Card (ATI 9600), audio card (Audigy 2) etc...AMD 2500+..... Hi! When I make a selection from a web page (IE6) (text, figures....) and copy it , when I try to paste it in Word (ONLY the first time) in Word appears a strange little coloured icon (it remenbers a mobile phone or a calculator). To paste I have to go back, do again COPY and the paste will work. ???????. I find it very strange. This is very weird, every other application, games, editors work perfectly.

But MSWORD 2003 whenever you use it (typing in it) for more than a few
seconds.
My whole system halts (unrecoverably). It crashes the sound as well, I know
this because usually I listen to MP3's while working.

It does this to spite:
-No mp3 player running
-New or Old documents.
-Only happens when typing or actually using word (not just looking).

Could this be a memory issue, if so, why only word?.

Need help.

Also note:
Using Windows 2003.
System is not overclocked.
RAM & BUS speeds are default, not altered.
Temperture is nominal.
Hard Drives are new.

Ideas?
