When opening a Word 97 Document, I receive the following
error message:

<path><file> is being used by <user>. Do you want to make
a copy?

OK or Cancel

This PC is not networked and I am the only user logged on
to the system. When I click Cancel, my document opens up
and there are no issues.

Has anyone had a similar problem or know how to get rid of
the error message?

If you are opening the file outside the application instead of using
File/Open then chances are there is an error in your file associations
for Word. Go to Start/Run and run::

winword /r

Note the space before the forward slash.
