Since I applied new Microsoft updates, opening Word
crashes my computer. All other software is fine - it
looks like a conflict, but I cannot find any info on it
and don't know where to start. Windows 2000 and microsoft
professional.

I'm getting the same problem and I tried all the options
in the mvps.org FAQ.

Here's what happens
1. I open word in normal or /a mode
2. I type a few words
3. Hit the Enter key
4. Operating System crashes and reboots
It happens every time.

Other apps work just fine (Quicken, Internet Explorer,
Outlook). This problem only started after I installed SP-
4 for Windows 2000 last Friday and the associated security
patches. I'm also using McAfee VirusScan Online.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

THANK YOU! I went to the site and followed the steps
regarding the corrupt normal.dot, as I had gone through
the previous suggestions without resolution. My problem
stemmed for a corrupt normal file. You saved me from
having to go purchase an upgrade, which I was considering!

Thanks again!!!

FWIW you would've probably still encountered the problem even after an
upgrade since your personal preferences, such as Normal.dot, are
preserved.

Seldom are application errors caused by the Word installation.

Please post all follow-up questions to the newsgroup. Requests for
assistance by email can not be acknowledged.

Try this: go to C:/Documents and Settings/your username/Application
Data/Microsoft/Templates and rename the file "Normal.dot" to "Normal.old"
and try opening Word.

More info available below:

Yes, I did have it, but I cleaned it and installed all the
OS security updates.

You might want to search for it again. It was very easy to get reinfected
just while downloading the updates.
