I'm having some trouble with Word 2003 on Win XP.

Word chrashes when I click File -> Save or Save as, both with older
documents and new documents.

I have tried all the steps at the MVPS-site:

Rename normal.dot
Delete the Data registry key
Detect and repair
Remove all add-ins
No files in the Word startup folder
All updates from Microsoft Update are installed

When I start Word with the /a switch, no problem but a new normal.dot
is not created.

Any suggestions?

A new normal.dot won't be recreated when you start in Safe Mode.

Try using a different printer driver and test again. Any compatible, locally
installed printer driver will do for the test - even the Generic Text
driver. (I am suspecting that you have an HP printer?)

Yes, I have a HP Printer. I have tried installing the generic printer
driver and I have removed the HP printer (uninstalled the software
too), but still the same problem.

As Word is starting OK in Safe Mode, it now suggests that you have an
incompatible third party add-in. You need to remove all add-ins and them
replace one at a time until you find the culprit.

See how to find add-ins

As I stated in my initial post, I have removed all add-ins. :)

Word starts in Safe Mode which proves that there is nothing wrong with Word.
It has to be a bad printer driver, a corrupt normal.dotm or a third party
add-in.

I have renamed normal.dot, removed all add-ins, removed the standard
printer and installed the generic printer driver. Still no luck.

I also have Office 2007 installed and it works.

Ok, it works now. I removed the the Save as ODF plug-in and the Save
as Daisy plug-in. They weren't listed as add-ins in Word 2003 and I
thought they only were available for Word 2007.

Hi Fredrik,

Both of the Add-ins you mentioned do support multiple versions of Word. Please do provide feedback on any issues you're having
through the project pages for these items

The Daisy Consortium/Sonata/Microsoft
Office Open XML to Daisy Translator (Pipeline project)
http://blogs.technet.com/gray_knowlton/archive/2008/05/07/daisy-ttranslator-released.aspx

and Save As Daisy Add-in
http://www.daisy.org/projecs/save-as-daisy-microsoft/

Open XML / ODF Translator Add-ins for Office
http://odf-converter.sourceforge.net/index.html

You may want to also add the COM Add-ins choice to the Word 2003 menu.
Tools=>Customize=>Commands=>Tools Category
and drag COM Add-Ins to the Tools menu. Sometimes you'll find some surprising things listed there :) especially if an add-in is
doing minimal methods of version checking, such as looking for the existence only of MSO.dll or Winword.exe, or the Office Open XML
converter (not sure that's the case with these add-ins)
